I obviously wash my hands after going in a public toliet, but at home I don't mind because I don't touch anything except the loo roll aibu?

I always wash my hands when I go to the loo, feels yucky otherwise. DH tells DS he doesn't have to if he doesn't touch his willy, drives me crazy!

BUT... I recall reading somewhere that a toilet doesn't have significantly more germs than other parts of a building which you touch (staircases, door handles etc) or just the germs you accumulate by living. Washing them when you go to the toilet is just a good opportunity to clean your hands regularly, not only because of the toilet visit.

Anyone else heard this?

GoodTouchBadTouch · 15/08/2013 13:55

Its just such a cliché, depression is an excuse for child neglect, poor personal hygiene etc.

Actually I only shower after sex. If my husband was away for a week, and I hadn't got sweaty from exercise (unlikely) I can imagine I wouldn't shower for quite a while

Mumsyblouse · 15/08/2013 13:55

So, now I don't resent washing my hands as a chore, I think of it as like taking vitamins or drinking orange juice, really good for your health, and all the public health experts agree hand-washing is key to preventing virus transmission. Even in hospitals, people don't wash their hands enough, what's so hard about it?

ifyourehoppyandyouknowit · 15/08/2013 13:55

DS thinks it's the bestest treat in the world if I let him flush when I've been to the toilet. Easier than using your foot.

MrsSchadenfreude · 15/08/2013 13:57

Are you French? French women never seem to wash their hands after going to the loo.

MrsWedgeAntilles · 15/08/2013 13:57

Oh my goodness, wash your hands, please.
When I used to work in labs I remember a colleague telling me that most people are colonised by intestinal bacteria from about the waist down so unless your wiping technique is amazing you are most certainly transferring what could be dangerous pathogens about the place.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 15/08/2013 13:58

I have those little push button flushes on my toilets, I'd have to pull off some Darcey Bussell worthy moves to get them flushed using my feet!

I have a strange urge to try next time I go the loo now...

My sister used to not wash her hands after peeing until I reminded her that I flush before I wash my hands (unlike the rest of my family) so she'll be touching my shit germs on the handle.

My mum still washes her hands and then flushes, drives me up the wall, especially when she then goes to try and feel for teeth in my daughters mouth. I always stop her though.

GoodTouchBadTouch · 15/08/2013 14:01

I make the children wash their hands, I want them to have good habits, but I don't bother, Im a grown up. They get colds obviously but only ever had a couple of vomiting/diarrhea things. Never had the norovirus. I never get anything ever. Maybe that's BECAUSE Im not too anal about hygiene?? Don't know.

I used to know a girl who bleached everything in sight with Milton. Her kids were in hospital for respiratory anti-bs every winter. Maybe there is a link

FrankelInFoal · 15/08/2013 14:03

For those saying they don't touch the loo seat because it is always up, you do realise that the splash from flushing the loo sends water particles up to 6ft away. That's why they often find faecal particles on toothbrushes when they run hygiene tests

So: wash your hands AND put the seat down before you flush

usualsuspect · 15/08/2013 14:06

My loo is seperate from my bathroom.

No poo on my toothbrush.

ShatnersBassoon · 15/08/2013 14:12

GoodTouchBadTouch - most people have never had norovirus, they don't all have unwashed hands. If you really think it's the toilet germs on your hands and around your house that have kept you healthy, you shouldn't be encouraging your children into the 'good habit' of washing their hands Confused

GoodTouchBadTouch · 15/08/2013 14:13

"That's why they often find faecal particles on toothbrushes when they run hygiene tests"

That sounds awful, but I just cant believe it. Otherwise everyone would be ill all the time wouldn't they?

Shatners, its different with children isn't it, they aren't as efficient at wiping as adults.

I just don't think it makes that much difference, if we were ill all the time Id wash my hands.

Flossie82 · 15/08/2013 14:18

Or it is proof that it doesnt matter at all, because most people arent ill all the time.

Drives me nuts finding the lid down, especially in dark at night when i dont notice until i sit on it

ProudAS · 15/08/2013 14:18

As a young child I wasn't taught to wash hands after wee-ing (did have to wash them before eating though). Soon started hand washing when I realised that it was a socially accepted norm.

PoppyAmex · 15/08/2013 14:27

It doesn't matter if its just a wee!

Presumably when you poo, you flush the toilet? Well the poo germs are in the button that you touch when it's just a wee.

Gross

What do people do when they're out and about and eg no soap?! Just water.

I was in Sitges/Barcelona at various hotels/restaurants/museums/art galleries and in a few there was no soap - just water...

I sometimes had hand sanitizing gel so used that but if I didn't have that in my bag just did a cursory rinse of hands and washed at next convenient place with soap (as out and more often than not visiting multiple places).

This was ONLY if I did a wee though!

FrankelInFoal · 15/08/2013 14:49

Scientific study on spray from flushing toilets

Weener · 15/08/2013 15:05

I wash my hands when I go to the loo if I am at work, or in a restaurant, or basically anywhere where I am in the presence of other people cos that' just sensible and polite innit! I would like to think other people do the same and don't, for example, shake my hand when theirs might have wee on it.

However, when it's just me in my flat (I live on my own) then quite frankly I frequently canny be arsed. Is that rank? I get up for a wee in the the night on average 3 times and don't bother then either.

I am practically NEVER ill (in fact as close to NEVER as it's possible to be) and am a v healthy person.

ViviPru · 15/08/2013 15:08

I wouldn't want to share a tray of Crudités at your house, that's for sure

ShatnersBassoon · 15/08/2013 15:09

Weener, do you ever have guests in your flat? Open the door and sign for a parcel?
