To have expected a soft play to serve toast to a baby

I have just left a play centre early and really annoyed. I forgot to bring a snack for my ds who has just turned one.
I was going to buy a banana from the soft play cafe but they were black.
I asked for a piece of toast and was told very rudely no as it was not breakfast time . I asked if they had an suitable baby snacks and was offered quavers! I asked again politely for toast as they sold nothing suitable for a baby but was told no ( despite a loaf and toaster in full view)
AIBU to think it is good customer service just to make a piece of flipping toast for a baby?

Tondeleyo it's ok didn't think you were rude. I wouldn't have posted in aibu if I was easily offended.

Fair enough lynette!

I wouldn't really care about giving a black banana at home but it would annoy me to pay for a manky banana in a cafe at an inflated price.

Growlithe · 10/08/2013 22:36

What's wrong with a black banana? Confused

LynetteScavo · 10/08/2013 22:36

There is 0.45g (sodium 0.18g) of salt in a packet of Quavers

The daily recommended maximum amount of salt for a child
1 to 3 years ? 2g salt a day (0.8g sodium).

(That doens't seem to add up to me - I copied and pasted)

The thing is, if you forget a snack, you can't be fussy about what your child eats.

It would have been good customer service to make you what you wanted, but such a thing is rate in places like indoor play areas.

SirChenjin · 10/08/2013 22:38

Nothing wrong with a black banana if that's what you like. Personally I find them far, far too sweet and wouldn't want to be charged for one at an inflated price in a soft play which can't be arsed to provide its customers with what they have asked for ie a stupid bit of toast.

ChippingInHopHopHop · 10/08/2013 22:38

Jan49 - you really do ask some odd questions HmmGrin

Pearly - YADNBU. You, me & anyone sane know that :) Most of the soft play places around here are really nice - clean, comfortable & have good cafes, but I went to one the other day, the play area was 'ok' but the 'cafe' was dire. All chocolate, crisps etc, no fruit, cheese or anything like that. The meals were all sausages/nuggets/burgers with fries. We didn't eat there, which we had planned to.

wickeddevil · 10/08/2013 22:40

I'm guessing you won't be going back there pearly.

So they have lost a customer and potential future sales because they couldn't be bothered to make toast? Not really understanding the posters suggesting that if you make one lot of toast you would have to make more and it would be bad for business. No it wouldn't. If there is a demand for toast and the profit margin is correct, you make a profit not a loss.

Oh and What you feed your child is your choice. YANBU

HaroldLloyd · 10/08/2013 22:41

I wouldn't give my baby quavers I have to say. Not even if I had forgotten my fruit from the bong bong tree Grin

Growlithe · 10/08/2013 22:44

If he has only been weaned for two months, could you not have given him some milk for a snack on this occasion?

TheProsAndConsOfHitchhiking · 10/08/2013 22:46

I wouldn't go to McDonald's at 2 pm and ask for a bacon and egg mcmuffin, they stop serving those at 10.30am ( not that I would eat one anyway) but if I did ask, as that's all my baby would eat I would be told no and to pick something else off the menu.

Yabu op. you should have picked something else and made do.

Quavers, beans, even chips are quite suitable or a 1 year old. And there is nothing wrong at all with a black banana.

FunnysInLaJardin · 10/08/2013 22:47

I would have given mine quavers, but then I am slack Grin

HaroldLloyd · 10/08/2013 22:47

Then the cafe were even more short sighted as they could have charged a quid for toast but they have got naff all for milk.

I'm weaning DS2 right now and yes he could probably go without and just drink milk but in OPs shoes if he seemed hungry I would have asked for toast.

HaroldLloyd · 10/08/2013 22:49

He's not one though. I would probably give DS a chip to chew on but not everyone would. I love chips I do.

Growlithe · 10/08/2013 22:49

SirC but it wouldn't be you eating the black banana. It would be a baby who would probably enjoy something sweet and mushy.

squoosh · 10/08/2013 22:52

The bread was there, the toaster was there. They perhaps pay 50p a loaf and they could have charged you 50p a slice.

Where is the logic in their refusing?

HaroldLloyd · 10/08/2013 22:52

Ripe bananas yes black rotten things no.

What state was this banana in OP?

SofiaVagueara · 10/08/2013 22:58

If it's a catering toaster don't they have to heat up for a while and cool down so it wouldn't be practical to just turn it on for 1 slice?

Also if they use different equipment for the lunch service it's totally possible that the toaster had been packed away.

squoosh · 10/08/2013 23:08

But the OP does say she could see the toaster. :)

TotesAmazeGoats · 10/08/2013 23:10

This thread has left me aghast.

That a) so many are actually blaming you for not taking the quavers... TO FEED TO A 1YO

And b) how people genuinely believe you we're treated fairly. I run a cafe, and I don't serve toast as a rule, but fuck me I make sandwiches, and if someone wants me to toast some bread (intended for sandwiches) for their hungry baby, I bloody well will do. The thought of turning round and telling you it's lunch time and therefore I cannot make toast is mind blowing.
It upsets me that so many people are so desensitised to customer service.
That, is appalling service, YADDDDNBU.

PearlyWhites · 10/08/2013 23:11

A black banana is ok but these were not just a few black spots they were squashed and very black.
I could see the toaster it wasn't packed away. Am not an expert but it looked like a regular toaster to me. Toast was 60p btw incidentally 10 p more than the bananas and the same price as the quavers.

OP posts:
HaroldLloyd · 10/08/2013 23:13

You can tell can't you with a banana if its going to be black and horrible inside not just over ripe.

bababababoom · 10/08/2013 23:17

yanbu, it wouldn't have killed them.

But you could have got him a sandwich and taken the rest home for later. At one he can eat anything even if he doesn't eat all of it. My kiddies ate sandwiches at 7 months, varying levels of success!

HaroldLloyd · 10/08/2013 23:20

Are your expectations in a cafe so low that you will buy anything that doesn't kill you?

Bloody hell.

HaroldLloyd · 10/08/2013 23:21

Shit sorry I misread that! Apologies.

HaroldLloyd · 10/08/2013 23:22

Im going to shut this thread down before I toast my own head!
