To have expected a soft play to serve toast to a baby

PearlyWhites · 10/08/2013 16:17

I have just left a play centre early and really annoyed. I forgot to bring a snack for my ds who has just turned one.
I was going to buy a banana from the soft play cafe but they were black.
I asked for a piece of toast and was told very rudely no as it was not breakfast time . I asked if they had an suitable baby snacks and was offered quavers! I asked again politely for toast as they sold nothing suitable for a baby but was told no ( despite a loaf and toaster in full view)
AIBU to think it is good customer service just to make a piece of flipping toast for a baby?

Oh. Ok. Missed that. Oops.

that point is,wrong then. Sorry.

My major point though is that if it were the owner serving, I'm sure she would have served the toast. But a member of staff can't make such a decision.

PearlyWhites · 12/08/2013 21:43

Thanks for all the comments am going to conclude I was not unreasonable. Have also found the end of the thread hilarious.

Thepowerof3 · 12/08/2013 21:47

And delicious?

pigletmania · 12/08/2013 21:53

Arethere Shock Hmm a fecking bit f toast. I would not want my one year old having sausages chips and beans, te baby was remature so digestive system would be very immature so woud probably no cope with that meal

pigletmania · 12/08/2013 21:54

Premature

FattyMcButterPants · 12/08/2013 21:59

I have laughed out loud at this thread, it's got it all (except that OP wasn't trying to breastfeed and we don't know whether she's a SAHM or not).

Only on MN. Priceless. Grin

FreudiansSlipper · 12/08/2013 21:59

yanbu

but of course many on here are going to say you are why expect your baby to be treated differently blah blah blah

can't help but think of Basil Fawlty service

SirChenjin · 12/08/2013 22:09

OP - I think you know what the answer is. Henceforth, whenever you venture out of the house, you must pack the following in your changing bag.

  1. A loaf of bread
  2. A tub or margarine or butter (I suggest you look very carefully at the salt/fat content before deciding...)
  3. A knife
  4. A plate
  5. A toaster
  6. An petrol driven generator
  7. Petrol
  8. A spare of each of the above, in case you dare to run out

That way, you will never, ever be without toast Grin

heidipi · 12/08/2013 22:16

This thread is brilliant, have spent the best part of an hour reading it when should be painting the bathroom.

Particularly love TOAST CUNTS and the brilliantly convoluted suggestions as to how it could have been utterly impossible to make the damn toast - personal fave being the recent pondering that if Minipearlywhites had got his round of toast there would have been none at all left for the real breakfast time the next day. Grin

I now really want some toast but it's prob not the right time.

SirChenjin · 12/08/2013 22:19

I think we should all put a bit of bread in the toaster now as a salute to PearlyWhites. Who's with me? Grin

Moknicker · 12/08/2013 22:22

Chocolatepup - nothing wrong in believing in the innate goodness of people. :)

Im not denying the existence of altruism- but when the motivations are probed (and you may ask why do that at all) there is often some benefit - social, emotional, financial or even genetic for the person being altruistic.

Altruistic behaviour also is higher within closer knit social groups/tribes as it contributes to the community cohesion and so is in the interest of people to behave that way.

Had the OP been a friend of toast denier Im sure she would have got the toast. Ditto if it were a small local cafe where she was a regular customer.

I do think it was strange to deny the request of course and I wondering why here in the US customer service is of a much higher level. While part of it could be that Americans are just nicer people, I thought the tipping culture here might play a significant role.

Sirchenjin -Tipping is no different in principle from getting a bonus so not sure about your references to backhanders and bribery. In any case, tipping in restaurants is the norm in the UK as well and so are bonuses (although not as prevalent as the US) so you are already living in that culture to some extent.

squoosh · 12/08/2013 22:22

Don't be ridiculous the toaster is out of commission until 7.49am

heidipi · 12/08/2013 22:23

Sir I'm with you. would it be entitled to ask you to please pass the Marmite?

heidipi · 12/08/2013 22:25

Can I pay you a tenner for a slice of wholemeal and hold it up to the light bulb for a bit then squoosh?

HaroldLloyd · 12/08/2013 22:39

Im in. Its been a rocky road, though weaning, salt content, profit margins, the horror of running short of provisions. There was the excitement and disappointment of the beans on toast debacle.

Tea n toast all around, although you cant have tea as I'm allergic to my kettle and if I give you all one everyone will want one. Oh and if you want toast you'll have to ask in the morning, its not breakfast time for fucks sake.

Maggietess · 12/08/2013 22:56

SirChenjin ... Can I suggest you might be on to a winner of a business idea here. Build just such a pack of items 1-8 and flog it on Mumsnet, under a thread headed "aibu to leave the house without the entire contents of this pack" ... Traffic will flood in, you'll get free advertising, pack will fly off the shelves, you'll make a mint and mums like OP and I will never be toastless and unprepared again Grin.

Thepowerof3 · 13/08/2013 08:09

Ode to soft play:
Mini Pearly Whites wanted some toast
You wouldn't serve him and you were his host
You wanted him to stuff down Sausage and Chips
Apparently because we don't leave tips
Do us all a favour and shove your quavers
Your attitude I hate most
About your customer service you cannot boast

SirChenjin · 13/08/2013 10:35

Love it Thepowerof3 Grin

Catsize · 13/08/2013 13:26

powerof, couldnt resist singing that Mike the Knight minstrel style.

She should have made toast. It is ridiculous.

I would not let my 20mth old eat from that menu. Apart from the beans. Recently relented.

Even if the bananas weren't really that bad - were they at fruit fly stsge? - their attitude stinks.

Thepowerof3 · 13/08/2013 13:56

Now I'm doing that Catsize!

Catsize · 14/08/2013 21:39

In the name of research, I checked out the toast situation at our local play place today. 30p a slice. Served all day. Business still thriving.

SirChenjin · 14/08/2013 22:14

That's the noise of my chin hitting the floor.

What do you mean they sell toast all day and they are still in business? How can this be??

Catsize · 14/08/2013 22:38

I know. Incredible. But we are oop north, so hamsters power toasters here.

SirChenjin · 15/08/2013 07:59

I have heard this about the oop north (although we are in the proper north and have haggises powering our toasters)
