To have expected a soft play to serve toast to a baby

PearlyWhites · 10/08/2013 16:17

I have just left a play centre early and really annoyed. I forgot to bring a snack for my ds who has just turned one.
I was going to buy a banana from the soft play cafe but they were black.
I asked for a piece of toast and was told very rudely no as it was not breakfast time . I asked if they had an suitable baby snacks and was offered quavers! I asked again politely for toast as they sold nothing suitable for a baby but was told no ( despite a loaf and toaster in full view)
AIBU to think it is good customer service just to make a piece of flipping toast for a baby?

YDNBU! As others have said - of course she should have made the toast for you.

Wish they sold healthier food as well as junk in these places. I also wish more people wanted to buy healthier food. Quavers for a one-year-old? Quavers aren't even food in my opinion! No doubt it wouldn't have harmed him that once, but why not just give him a piece of bread? Whoever even notices what other people are eating? How would there have been a rush on the toast? Blimey!

kali110 · 10/08/2013 18:26

Matbe theyve been told what they can make and when. If thats so then they werent been unreasonable. You just follow what youve been told.

Pancakeflipper · 10/08/2013 18:34

That soft play centre is obviously missing a trick not serving toast all day. And tea cakes..... Oh yes. I love those.

I am always acting entitled in food places as have a child with a particular food allergy. I have had stroppy but often helpful without me having to explain why I am being entitled.

Go elsewhere. That's what I do when I receive rudeness when I have been polite and nice.

miriamaso · 10/08/2013 18:37

Yep, they're crap and I agree that Quavers is not an option for a 1 year old.

Sirzy · 10/08/2013 18:40

Nothing wrong with asking but they are under no obligation to do so.

They have made the decision only to sell toast with breakfast for whatever reason so that is what they are doing.

You could have got the banana, or the quavers, or even sausage and beans

squoosh · 10/08/2013 18:46

YADNBU.

Ridiculous attitude to customer service. The bread was there, the toaster was there, what was the problem? Maybe it was the labour involved in placing said bread in said toaster. Phew, yes that's certainly an arduous task.

I don't blame you not wanting to feed your child Quavers.

Typical MN response though from many that your perfectly reasonable request makes you a spoilt princess.

PuppyMonkey · 10/08/2013 18:47

YANBU - and Grin at all the people saying if they'd done it for you, they'd have to do it for everyone. So, do it for bleeding everyone then and put the customary massive mark up on it.

HaroldLloyd · 10/08/2013 18:52

Bit jobsworth but they probably are told not to serve cheap toast in order to "encourage" people to buy a more expensive meal.

Hissy · 10/08/2013 19:14

If your child's digestive system has only been used to food for the last 8wks, why would you be giving bread OR bananas?

those foods are too complex at that stage, IIRC.

pop some pouches in your changing bag for emergencies and then if you forget again, you have something appropriate.

PearlyWhites · 10/08/2013 19:25

My ds has had some food before 8 months just not fully weaned. The play centre will not let you bring your own food even snacks for babies/ toddlers.

YANBU

It's hardly going to tax their culinary skills is it? As someone up thread says, if your customers (you know, the people who keep you in business) want toast and are prepared to pay for it, make them fucking toast.

HaroldLloyd · 10/08/2013 20:06

What bananas? I give bananas straight away, and toast.

Nothing wrong with that in my book!

thistlelicker · 10/08/2013 21:25

But you said original post that u forgot snack, so either it was an impromptu visit or u planned on taking a snack after they request
You don't?

ThePorpoiseofStupidity · 10/08/2013 21:38

I think YABU. Quavers aren't really that bad, are they? There is probably a higher salt content in toast with butter than in a pack of Quavers.

pianodoodle · 10/08/2013 21:40

Really? The first food DD tried at 6 months was a banana...

OP if I worked there I'd have made you the toast. I don't think it was an unreasonable request and don't think it would have caused a sudden demand for toast at the cafe but I'm not much of a business person Grin

PeazlyPops · 10/08/2013 21:43

YABU.

You say you forgot to brig snacks, so it was only a snack, not a main meal. I'm sure there would have been something else, a piece of fruit, you could have shared a sandwich?

If he's only been weaned two months, skipping a snack wouldn't hurt.

BillComptonstrousers · 10/08/2013 21:48

What's wrong with black bananas? Nice and mushy for one year olds surely?

bamboostalks · 10/08/2013 21:53

How petty of them. Bizarre behaviour IMO. What is the big deal about making someone some toast?

pianodoodle · 10/08/2013 21:55

I don't get really hung up about food but just for a baby just turned one I wouldn't have gone for the quavers either.

I know people say "it won't kill him etc..." but all the same they're a bit shit aren't they?

Hissy · 10/08/2013 21:56

Child is at very early stages of weaning. Bananas are NOT stage 1 foods, they can be hard to digest.

Poor OP had a right rough day, hope DS is ok.

SirChenjin · 10/08/2013 21:58

Why would anyone pay for a black banana? Would you buy a black banana? I know I wouldn't.

emsyj · 10/08/2013 21:58

YANBU. As others have said, they missed a sale.

There is a cafe near me that serves toast all day. It's £1 a slice and customers can't get enough of it (it is pretty nice toast, to be fair - lovely and thick and chunky and smothered in butter). The profit margins on that must be fantastic.

TondelayoSchwarzkopf · 10/08/2013 21:58

Maybe the toast was for the staff? Maybe it was the only lunch they had all day?

YOU are responsible for feeding your child and a soft play centre is hardly a place you go if you have strict criteria around the nutritional content of the food. Grin

ThePorpoiseofStupidity · 10/08/2013 22:01

I thought banana was fine for first stage weaning Confused.

Alisvolatpropiis · 10/08/2013 22:04

I really don't think OP is being entitled.

It's highly unlikely if they had made toast for the OP's baby there would have been an avalanche of people wanting to order toast. Because their children will probably want something else.

It is poor customer service. And doing one nice thing for one customer does not mean you are obliged to do it for everybody else.

I used to help elderly/disabled customers with their shopping either around the shop/to their care. I didn't help fully able people.
