To have expected a soft play to serve toast to a baby

PearlyWhites · 10/08/2013 16:17

I have just left a play centre early and really annoyed. I forgot to bring a snack for my ds who has just turned one.
I was going to buy a banana from the soft play cafe but they were black.
I asked for a piece of toast and was told very rudely no as it was not breakfast time . I asked if they had an suitable baby snacks and was offered quavers! I asked again politely for toast as they sold nothing suitable for a baby but was told no ( despite a loaf and toaster in full view)
AIBU to think it is good customer service just to make a piece of flipping toast for a baby?

Bananas are fine for first stage weaning - here

HaroldLloyd · 10/08/2013 22:07

Bananas are fine. They are suggested on the NHS website.

Crack on with the bananas OP.

HaroldLloyd · 10/08/2013 22:08

Cross post, I even had a check, thought I was going "bananas" there.

TondelayoSchwarzkopf · 10/08/2013 22:09

NHS recommends Banana as a first food.

Stages are an invention of baby food manufacturers aren't they?

pigletmania · 10/08/2013 22:11

Yanbu at all, I would expect better at a childres organisation. My goodness te op only asked for toast not a 3 course meal, toast is good anytime. I thought tat a business like tat would want to keep customers happy!

LynetteScavo · 10/08/2013 22:15

I'd be happier for my baby to eat a black banana than toast when weaning.

And even I wouldn't give Quavers unless it was an emergency.

ilovebabytv · 10/08/2013 22:17

YANBU, its called customer service and they were severely fucking lacking. Toast at £1 a pop = huge profit margins. So effectively they are shit at business as well.

fairylightsinthespring · 10/08/2013 22:18

YANBU. I am often amazed at the responses on here to things like this. Its a small request, that would have made the OPs life much easier and exceedingly little cost (in terms of time) to the venue and a bit of basic common sense and compassion can make a huge difference. The OP has already said that there WEREN'T lots of alternatives, so perhaps people could stop saying there must have been, She forgot a snack, bloody hell, well then its ALL HER FAULT for being a shit parent. The OP is not about what alternatives there were or if black bananas or quavers would have been ok, it was about a really, honestly, simple request being turned down for no good reason. I wish that people in general could be just a damn sight more caring and flexible and less jobsworthy / lazy / tight / sure that people are out to get an unfair advantage that they are not "entitled" to in some way. It might make the world just a little bit nicer for everyone..

schmee · 10/08/2013 22:19

YABU - it wasn't their responsibility to make sure your child was fed. When they are at little baby stage it's ok to bring a snack in case the cafe has nothing suitable IMO.

On the other hand I was delighted when a cafe the other day served my DD strawberries (without the meringue and cream) and only charged me a token price. I'd asked if they did them separately - they didn't, but they offered to without blinking an eye.

PeazlyPops · 10/08/2013 22:20

But toast is no good really. It's hardly a snack for a baby that's only been weaned for two months!

PearlyWhites · 10/08/2013 22:21

Thistle I would have given him
a snack in the car , it was a spur of the momment thing and I forgotten to put a snack in the changing bag.

fairylightsinthespring - I couldn't agree more. MN is very odd at times.

HaroldLloyd · 10/08/2013 22:22

I don't see the problem with toast either.

Her choice was

Paying for a dubious banana
Beans/sausages
Toast

I would have probably asked for toast too if I saw bread and a toaster.

They were being a bit petty there I think.

I don't see any problem at all with giving a baby that has been on solids a bit of toast to chew on.

PearlyWhites · 10/08/2013 22:22

Peazly see my other post the didn't sell sandwiches

HaroldLloyd · 10/08/2013 22:23

What exactly is wrong with toast?

Jan49 · 10/08/2013 22:24

Maybe I'm missing the point here, but why did you need to give the baby a snack?Confused

SirChenjin · 10/08/2013 22:24

There is no problem with toast OR bananas - see link I posted earlier

Dominodonkey · 10/08/2013 22:24

YANBU -

the randomness on MN never ceases to amaze me. One minute people are fainting with horror at a 5 year old with a fruit shoot and the next saying that a poster is unreasonable for not feeding her 1 year old crisps!

SirChenjin · 10/08/2013 22:25

Maybe because he was hungry Jan? One year olds do occasionally get that way.

PearlyWhites · 10/08/2013 22:25

Because he was hungry.....

HaroldLloyd · 10/08/2013 22:26

I know this is AIBU but I can't see why people are picking holes in what the OP is feeding her baby when it's perfectly fine.

I'm sure we have all been caught out without a snack on occasion.

TondelayoSchwarzkopf · 10/08/2013 22:28

I am sorry if I have been rude to you OP - I haven't meant to blame you.

However, I do see most Soft Play centres with overworked staff who manage long queues and are likely on low wages. It is not usually their fault that the food is so dire. They may have been told to stick strictly to the menu and not offer cheaper options - so they encourage people to trade up to a higher value meal.

My local soft play - which is lovely and serves very healthy food - has had to start charging for babies because of mums who bring their own food and then nurse a coffee for hours while taking up the space of potentially paying customers. It is a privately owned small business so has tight margins.

Not relevant, just to explain my point of view really.

LynetteScavo · 10/08/2013 22:29

What is wrong with toast?

Nothing....I just chose to avoid gluten when weaning. My personal choice, which is why I would have gone for a black banana. (Nothing wrong with black bananas IMO - way tastier and easier to digest than slightly green ones).

SirChenjin · 10/08/2013 22:30

Nope Harold, there are some who are never, ever, ever caught out without snacks, or nappies, or milk, or wipes - or ANYTHING in fact. Their cildren only ever eat fruit from the bong-bong tree (provided, of course, it was organically grown by virgins) and sip dew drops harvested that morning.

LaCerbiatta · 10/08/2013 22:32

People's inflexible attitudes as shown here are the reason this is such a bloody child-unfriendly country!

This would be unthinkable anywhere else!
