AIBU to think buggy snobbery is alive and kicking!

I'm the owner of a (2nd hand) bugaboo bee which we bought simply because it was the best for public transport, small and light. Since entering the world of babies we have received an unexpected amount of comment both snobby and reverse snobby (ooh a bugaboo, yummy mummy are we)! WTF! Anyone judge or judges in secret?

OMG if in ten years time DSs possibly have children what on earth will the pram thing be like then. Shock

I am not pushing a DGC of mine in a fugly buggy for anyone.

gotthemoononastick · 14/07/2013 12:05

Laughing at Sparkling!!Only advice is to start saving now.You are worth it though! The grandmother thing is an unexpected ,irrational ,fierce love story.

Sparklingbrook · 14/07/2013 12:11

Yes moon forget the Uni fees I need to start saving for the fugly buggy. Shock It seems the 2 costs may be quite similar amount wise.

Kafri · 14/07/2013 12:14

I was rather shocked. Think my jaw hit the floor.
Seriously though, I hope little in got fed.

Wrt the donkey, I guessing naive in that I haven't thought about a second child. DS was an ivf baby so don't like to make assumptions that there'll be a sibling so have only thought about things from a 'one child' perspective.

Well you're contradicting yourself.for someone doesn't get buggy snobbery.youre inverted snob
So you snigger at posh prams(how do you know it's posh) but feel smug at own thrift
You seem to v much get buggy snobbery as your post attests.you exhibit all attribute of buggy snob

Fairydogmother · 14/07/2013 12:56

I'm just bloody glad I bought the vista now! Grin

scottishmummy · 14/07/2013 13:11

Buy the pram you want.its no deeper than that
If you judge someone by their pram, that's your issue not theirs
Pram is a product, nothing more than that.

CruCru · 14/07/2013 13:57

Hmmm. This is interesting. I have a 2010 model Vista (now looking very battered), a Bugaboo Bee (new, I am very pregnant and wanted something lighter so it was my birthday present) and a Maclaren XT (great pushchair, lives in the car boot). Planning to get a P+T when the second arrives.

Presumably I would be judged differently depending on which I pushed?

Sparklingbrook · 14/07/2013 14:03

A pram for a birthday present? Isn't that like having an iron or a vacuum cleaner? Grin I would not be amused.

CruCru · 14/07/2013 14:15

Perhaps a bit, I didn't want anything else though.

Sparklingbrook · 14/07/2013 14:19

Grin Cru fair enough. Just make sure it's nice jewellery next year?

Madmum24 · 14/07/2013 14:34

I do judge, simply because the new models are plain bloody awful looking. I can't look at a quinny without thinking some genius turned a computer chair into a hideous pram, they also look so fragile to me (proved correct by my shake check) And I just googled bugaboos and can't believe people pay so much money for them!

First buggy was a mothercare stroller (I never walk very far so refused the silver cross pram my mother insisted she had to buy because her parents bought her one) and it was great, used it until dc3 when the axle broke and subsequent ones were carboot sale jobs.

Yesterday whilst out in the town I saw a huge thing with double brakes on the handle, I mean unless you live on the side of a mountain and your baby weighs 25kg why would anyone need brakes?

I hate those buggies where the newborn lies underneath the toddler, it makes me feel claustrophobic just looking at them.

I laughed at a very smug recent FB status "Everyone is criticizing me for spending HUGE amounts on my babes' nursery equipment, it's not my fault I want them to be as safe as possible"..........ROFL!

scottishmummy · 14/07/2013 14:43

All which places you in the back in olden times, prams cost 27p.no fripperies or features
People pay what they can afford, there are many prams all with features like brakes
For the more prosaic there's free cycle, skips,to locate your perfect thrifty bone rattler

HazleNutt · 14/07/2013 14:46

So do you reverse snobs also look at new expensive cars, snigger and feel smug, as it's just a car and your ancient rusty banger does the same job? It probably does, but a new Mercedes or Audi is still significantly more comfortable to drive. If someone wants a more expensive model of anything and can afford it, why is it a problem for anybody else really?

Madmum24 · 14/07/2013 14:53

No, a car is completely different. Cars have many different features, buggies do not. Anyway I personally don't care if someone pulls a buggy from a skip or spends £50,000 on a gold plated one with Chardonnay embroidered into the bucket seat with gold thread. I might think it's ugly though

5madthings · 14/07/2013 15:00

Well all buggies have to have a break by law and yes they are needed. Even on a slight slope a buggy can roll away from you if you let go of the handle.

And they do have a variety of diff features, from lying totally flat, to attaching carrycots, carseats, buggy boards, converting to a twin pushchair or being suitable for beach, off road etc. To better sunshade or raincover. Adjustable footrests and all sorts of other extras.

We paid £500 for a bugaboo frog. Have used for four children and over ten years. Thats a pretty reasonable inbestment imo.

5madthings · 14/07/2013 15:00

Brake... Bloody auto correct.

Madmum24 · 14/07/2013 15:04

By brake I didn't mean a brake on the wheel that all buggies have, I meant two handbrakes on the handle like a bike. Surely no one goes that fast?

AmyFarrahFowlerCooper · 14/07/2013 15:10

Some people run with prams. I'd find a brake like that quite useful having moved to quite a hilly area. It would make it a bit less tiring knowing I could press the brakes to have a rest from the weight of dd, shopping and pram when we go up and down some of the steepest ones. Plus going down the steep hills can make it tricky not to pick up speed and a brake would make it easier for me to slow down and less worried about the pram suddenly careering down onto the road at the bottom.

AmyFarrahFowlerCooper · 14/07/2013 15:11

Oh that sounds like I run down the hills. I don't I walk.

5madthings · 14/07/2013 15:12

Some buggies are used for jogging etc and having the brake on the handlebar makes it easier to use. Plus when going downhill yes it can be helpful to have a brake just to slow the puahchair/stop it running away with you.

Madmum24 · 14/07/2013 15:18

One brake, fair enough, but two?

WaitingForMe · 14/07/2013 15:19

All this has really passed me by! DH and I went to the Baby Show, played with loads and bought the system we liked best (Mamas and Papas Sola - rear-facing options, buggy bit lies flat).

I've had a few compliments and I love it. I've looked at friends' prams and buggies and liked some and not others. How have I missed this issue? I must be the most oblivious person out there!

Sparklingbrook · 14/07/2013 15:19

Don't some have a wrist strap too? Like on the Wii?
