To ask advice on drastic pubic hair removal- how do you do it?

I realise it is not to everyone's taste, but I have decided that I would like to remove most of my pubic hair. I've read several threads in the subject, and I realise how controversial it is, but it's what I want to do.

I'm naturally pretty hairy, currently shave around sides, trim the rest.

I definitely want to remove everything 'underneath'; most, if not all of front, and I have a tricky 'between buttocks' bit to deal with.

I'm not sure whether to wax, shave or use cream- or maybe a combination.

I would really appreciate some advice from MNers who do this- what method do you use, how often do you do it, any other tips.

The mantelpiece analogy is horrid Sad also is "fire-poking" all you are getting up to?!? Surely your imagination could take a guess at another pass time that might be improved by depilation?

lollylaughs I'll certainly bear that in mind if I ever get to South Africa! If you ever come to the London commuter belt I'd get yourself tidied up first Grin

Yes, it was EXTREMELY painful. A friend of mine went to the same place and also found it agony, but then she went to another clinic (still laser, not IPL) and said it was much less painful. Maybe it was something to do with the equipment or settings.

So do you need stubble in order to laser? I did look into it before and was put off by it not working so well on blond hair, maybe that's better now?

Report
ZolaBuddleia · 08/07/2013 15:35

Yep. You need to shave the night before because the darkness of the hair conducts the light of the laser down to the follicle.

Grin Lol at the imagined results on my fufu! I've got brown hair up-top and white-blond hair underneath, obviously there's graduation at some point, I'm not a badger! I'd look like I'd got quite a jazzy Mohican effect going on Grin

i still don't understand how the outer labia get waxed, shaved or veeted without sever pain/tugging. I know everyone is different down below, but how can veet or a razor be used on the outer bits, without the cream getting near sensitive bits.

Fakebook if thats the case then could you please explain why people felt the need to wear merkins then.

Report
Snoot · 08/07/2013 16:45

Weren't merkins used to conceal functional baldness to combat crabs? Often by prostitutes? Also to conceal signs of STDs if I remember correctly. Not sure they were particularly there to be attractive per se but rather to conceal and to normalise.

I don't think my mum has ever seen anything quite as hideous as you describe, mignonette, but enough to cause her to advise me to leave well alone down there (not that I needed the advice).
but you ladies keep right on going. Risking infection to conform to ludicrous porn-based expectations of female appearance is terribly liberated of you, after al.

Used to shave with a regular razor until I almost took a chunk out of my labia in an absent-minded moment (sort of cut a wedge into it). Bled like crazy and almost made me faint because I thought I'd cut a piece off.

Now I use those electric shavers made for the purpose, with a safe guard in place. They work wonderfully! I did find it itchy and a bit ingrown the very first couple times I did it, but been doing it for years now and never a problem any more, just like shaving legs/underarms.

Those talking about lasering - I had about 8 sessions (sides and top of bikini line but not right on the, er, middle) and you can have the whole lot off if you want to. I considered this but this just imagined I might look a bit scary down there when I'm 70 Shock so I went for everything but one small bit in the middle.

Mine is practically completely gone. I say practically as every couple of months I might have literally 2 or 3 hairs, but they are little soft ones and not pubey like

Pain, for me, it was quite painful but I still don't think as bad as waxing. And whoever it was who was talking about the blips, yes i agree, it's like little sharp stings one after the other. I said to my therapist to do 3, then stop for a few seconds and repeat as I found that more bearable!

I would recommend researching the right place to go too as there are so many different places/lasers. I went to a clinic that was specifically hair removal/tattoo removal etc, not a beauty salon. Although they may be just as good, it's a lot of money to pay if it doesn't work.

Mad question. ... I have pale skin, dark hair, very, very quick to restubble up.
I have found epilating my underarms to be revolutionary, no more 5 o'clock stubble, or those annoying dark patches where you can see it ready to sprout back in the slightest cold draft. .. should I really, really not consider epilation for my nether parts? Is it really that bad?

Report
Snoot · 08/07/2013 18:53

The problem I had with epilation was skin I hadn't adequately stretched becoming ensnared in the twirling mechanism Shock. It also takes much longer than waxing and so is more painful. I regularly epilate my legs and sometimes, in extremis, the pant-moustache area if I have to swim and have no time for a waxing appointment. My epilator is however about 10 years old and I'm sure they're better now. I've also only epilated my underarms once which led to the skin getting stuck in the mechanism so you're obviously much better at it than me!

I think perhaps it's the laser that hurts and IPL does not (I had IPL).

foreverondiet · 08/07/2013 20:37

I have a homedics me - and after a year I have minimal regrowth underarms legs bikini line - had a lot of hair underarms before. I use epilator every couple of weeks and then laser, very quick as hardly any growth after 2 weeks. Haven't dealt with down there yet but do plan to - but think will get first waxing done professionally don't fancy epilator at home on it. Alternatively laser can be done after shaving. And also with epilator alone got loads ingrown hairs but don't with homedics....

Thanks, you just keep on fighting the good fight, conforming to the feminist stereotype that if it's not your opinion it's the wrong one and women are so fucking stupid that if they don't tow the party line it's because they're too thick to make their own minds up. Girl fucking power.

Grin Well said Saidar, what is the term, feminazi or similar? I chose to take control of my feminity and I shan't be told what to do by man or woman!

"I shan't be told what to do by man or woman!" HUZZAH!

We are people at the end of the day. Yes we are condition by society, for society to exist to some extent we must be conditioned. I like being naked but I didn't go to work in the nuddy this morning. I just hate the idea that we're all so thick that we can't be aware of the social conditioning and decide as adults to do it anyway.

FWIW I look sod all like a porn star, I'm the main wage earner in our house, my DP is a SAHP who does the lion's share of the housework. Screw gender norms or labels, we do what makes us happy as people. Feminism helped me get here, and I am grateful for all the sacrifice that got me here, but leave my bush out of it.

Hmm

I shave down there. Same as I shave my armpit hair and my leg hair. I've been doing it for years. Started shaving before I had a serious boyfriend, before I'd seen porn, etc. I just prefer not to be hairy. That's my personal preference and hasn't been influenced by anyone but myself.

My body is a woman's body. I have stretch marks, a jelly post pregnancy belly (8 years after the event), and a childbirth damaged nether region. I definitely do not look like a child or a porn star, nor would I want to. Hmm

I think some of the po faced, judgy posters on here have been incredibly rude. The OP specifically stated that she didn't want a debate or judgement.
