To ask advice on drastic pubic hair removal- how do you do it?

I realise it is not to everyone's taste, but I have decided that I would like to remove most of my pubic hair. I've read several threads in the subject, and I realise how controversial it is, but it's what I want to do.

I'm naturally pretty hairy, currently shave around sides, trim the rest.

I definitely want to remove everything 'underneath'; most, if not all of front, and I have a tricky 'between buttocks' bit to deal with.

I'm not sure whether to wax, shave or use cream- or maybe a combination.

I would really appreciate some advice from MNers who do this- what method do you use, how often do you do it, any other tips.

Does lasering hurt? And what Zola said, do they do a thorough job?

I'd get yourself to a waxing salon and ask for the hot wax, go elsewhere if they don't do it. I've done it myself at home a few times but it's not been worth the sticking-together incidents, blood blisters and patchy results. Shaving gives me a rash and horrid, itchy regrowth. If waxing give yourself 2 days before a grand reveal just in case of soreness or redness Wink

Lasering doesn't hurt that much (it's absolutely nothing compared to waxing). It takes about 1 or 2 minutes per session. They do a little blip on your skin for about 1 or 2 seconds, and there can be a searing bit of pain at the very end.

All in all, it's really manageable.

I can't vouch for how thorough it is because I'm only half way through my course.

Crowler · 08/07/2013 13:11

That wasn't very clear.

The total session takes about 2 minutes. This is comprised of about 30 laser blips on your bits, each of which is maybe 2 seconds. The very tail end of each blip can be painful, but not all of the blips are painful.

Crowler is that 2 minutes to do the entire area, Hollywood wax style?

Report
Crowler · 08/07/2013 13:21

No, not hollywood - that would probably be more like 4/5 I'd guess and probably more like 80 blips.

I've just looked up lasering and 1st result is £450 for 4 sessions for a Brazilian. I'm paying £42 a pop for waxing, probably every 8-10 weeks. Hmmm, interesting Smile

Wow snoot 42 pounds... Shock

Is that normal price of Brazilian in UK or do you go to quite an exclusive salon?

Report
Crowler · 08/07/2013 13:27

Groupon! Use Groupon!

I paid (I think) 120 for 5 sessions? London.

How much is laser removal?? [curious]

I have pale skin and dark hair, shave my legs and it's just pointless as you can see the stubble in my legs waiting to sprout!

Am tempted by waxing (legs and other areas) but am such a wuss.

When I was young (longer ago than I like to think about) this kind o f hair removal, if contemplated (which it never was) would have struck us all as very extreme, likely to be painful and certainly not worth bothering with.
I can't see the change which has happened over the last few years in this respect as a positive development, I'm afraid. Perhaps we'll have corsets back next. After all, female waistlines left to their own devices are so ugly, aren't they? It'll be our "free choice", after all.

Hmm, groupon eh? I'll have a look, thanks for the tip Smile

I think £42 is fairly normal, hope so anyway! That is for a Hollywood, think the Brazilian is a couple of pounds less. The hot wax is more expensive than the other sort as well. This is a smart high street salon probably near enough to London to be expensive but not close enough to have much competition.

Be careful with shaving. I had to deal with a patient once who had an appalling genital abscess from an infected nick/hair follicle. Her Bartholins Glands became blocked too. She was completely unaware of any injury/nick but you are meant to have hair there and so its removal plus any injury/point of entry to infection means double the chances of problems. Have it done professionally for a while and do not shave.

I wont grumble about my 11 pounds for Hollywood and eyebrow wax again... Wink

I am assuming you are a medic, mignonette. My mother is a GP and has mentioned seeing infections as a result of shaving, waxing and other forms of hair removal down below.

I am a RNMH and once worked in a GU clinic doing bank shifts. That is where I encountered the monster abscess. your Mum must have seen some corkers too Karlos

Cu am in fits of laughter at your comment. Nearest thing to once setting my fringe on fire after leaning over a bunsen burner...

I tried the 'salon' wax but they made me keep my pants on so no hope of hair free bum for me! Quite possibly went to the wrong place.....

Thank you all for your advice. I decided to shave the sides, left a wideish landing strip, and used Veet on the underneath bits and around bottom.

I was a bit worried about the Veet straying into very sensitive areas, so I was extremely careful.

I'm very happy with it. I have no itching so far, but I guess it's too soon to comment on regrowth......

Wow, £11 for eyebrow and Hollywood? Where on earth are you? I paid £6 for a cheapy eyebrow thread and she cut my under-brow area, I think the thread broke? It's been a week and I've still got a scab. Not impressed.

Those of you that laser...is it really that effective? That you literally never have to wax/shave etc again?! Amazing!

Do they do the underneath?

Report
whoneedssleepanyway · 08/07/2013 14:26

I made the mistake recently of using Veet inbetween waxing appointments, it itched like crazy when it was growing back.

I am going to investigate laser I think. I had a swollen Bartholin's gland at one point, never thought it could have been due to waxing...

I had laser just on the tops of my legs, so it was a very undramatic bikini line treatment. Yes, fabulously effective, absolute dripping with sweat agony level. Am definitely in the market for something more like a Brazilian but scared of the humiliation. Grin

Karlos I agree with you why do women put themselves through all this and surely its not for men. I always believed that you didn't look at the mantlepiece when poking the fire

Report
WorraLiberty · 08/07/2013 14:38

I don't think anyone has said they do it for men...it's a personal thing.

I hate that 'mantlepiece/fire poking' saying though
