This man is 100 percent guility. He was accessing the most horrible online porn (which is another issue of course). I think the question is for me 'what if he murdered my child'. I believe in the death penalty.

waterlego6064 · 31/05/2013 21:58

Yes, let's look to the US for inspiration shall we? A country with a far higher murder rate than our own; and where people can spend most of their lives on Death Row putting forward appeal after appeal, costing the taxpayer millions. Hmm

Lionessy 'Common sense' differs between individuals. What you may see fit to 'put someone down' for, another may see differently and vice versa. How would it actually work in practice? Who will get to decide which killers get 'put down' and which don't?

Dawndonna · 31/05/2013 21:59

I think the hysterical hand wringing liberals on here are kidding themselves when they say a life in prison will be worse than death.
I think that the liberals on this thread have been anything but hysterical.

The RIGHT thing to do for irredeemable, unsafe individuals like this is to put them down. An example of non liberal hysteria?

I think I would support the death penalty being brought back for cases like this one. But not barbaric practices.

Despite the myriad miscarriages of justice that have already occured?

the US has the death penalty and I think it should apply here too in extreme cases.
And exactly how has the death penalty cut crime in the US?

suckmabigtoe · 31/05/2013 22:02

if i had a tick list for the names i'd expected to see saying certain things on this thread it'd be pretty near to full now.

Shallistopnow · 31/05/2013 22:03

Absolute scumbag. I don't agree with death sentences but really struggle to see what the point of him living is. That poor precious little girl.

suebfg · 31/05/2013 22:03

So what good do you think it does to keep someone locked up in prison for the rest of their lives? It isn't like there is going to be the opportunity to rehabilitate them?

There are some cases where in my mind, the death penalty is absolutely justifiable.

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 31/05/2013 22:04

it's like mumsnet bingo suckmabigtoe

minouminou · 31/05/2013 22:06

Sue - the death penalty doesn't fit your bill. He could be languishing on Death Row for 20-30 years, schlepping through appeal after appeal, costing more than a regular lifer because of this process.
The point of his life isn't for you to decide - that is actually up to him.

suebfg · 31/05/2013 22:07

"Sue - the death penalty doesn't fit your bill"

Actually it does ...

minouminou · 31/05/2013 22:08

It doesn't fit your bill because he might not actually be put to death for decades.

suckmabigtoe · 31/05/2013 22:09

exactly hobnobs

handcream · 31/05/2013 22:09

What is the point of allowing this man to live? Let's put aside the costs, the special protection he will need etc. The appeals, the claims that he hasn't had his human rights etc.

Just what is the point of him?

suebfg · 31/05/2013 22:09

We could have a fast track system ...

minouminou · 31/05/2013 22:10

Yes, I think they have one of those in The Congo....

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 31/05/2013 22:11

yes and Syria, Iran, China....ooh look there's a pattern emerging....

handcream · 31/05/2013 22:13

So bearing in mid the evidence and this man's refusual to say what he did with her - he can gert appeals - why??

suebfg · 31/05/2013 22:14

well maybe we have a thing or two to learn from them then.

Seriiously, I think we have lost our way with human rights in this country. I'm all for respecting the human rights of law abiding citizens but if someone can commit such a horrific crime (of which this is just one example), without a defence of insanity or such, then frankly I don't give a hoot for their human rights.

JakeBullet · 31/05/2013 22:14

The only point I can see is.that one.day he.might.say what he.did with April"s body Sad.

I personally want.him to live every day with the knowledge of what he did.

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 31/05/2013 22:15

dear god...

suckmabigtoe · 31/05/2013 22:15

"Just what is the point of him?"

Confused what are you suggesting? that anyone without a 'point' (what do you mean by point btw?) should be killed off?

suebfg · 31/05/2013 22:15

How can you honestly compare this with what is going on in Syria FFS?

minouminou · 31/05/2013 22:15

Because these appeals won;t be so much about whether he did it, but whether everything was handled correctly throughout the investigation.

An officer trod dirt somewhere in his house by accident, for example.

Or, it could be whether he's sane/fit to be executed and so on.

Could drag on for years. He has the right to appeal because we don;t have kangaroo courts.

minouminou · 31/05/2013 22:16

We're talking about the way justice or punishments are meted out in these places.

suebfg · 31/05/2013 22:17

So the US is like Syria then [hmmm]

minouminou · 31/05/2013 22:17

Human rights exist to protect everyone. They have to. They have to be applied blindly and objectively.
