I'm sure this has been done to death but I have to get it off my chest, its really very trivial, but I have to vent.
Why do people insist on putting photos on FB when they are off havign such an amazing time on their hols?
Is it because they want the world to know how fab it is where they are?
Is it to show off ?
Is it because they are more interested in trying to demonstrate to everyone else how fab things are than actually enjoying how fab everythign is
Is it just that I'm not really as into FB as they are therefore its lost on me ?

You see Shelley, I like seeing how great my friends' lives are. Because they are lovely people and I am happy for them.

If seeing their happiness made me sad and bitter, I would either get new friends or not hang around on social networking sites.

Porto, I agree. The people who hate it are those who don't use it, ime.

limited Grin I couldn't eat, so everything was on an empty stomach, I was being followed around by my boss with a wine bottle, or thats how it seemed. I'd planned on only having one glass with dinner and one for the toast. well, that went well!

Spero, yep. I enjoy using FB, I have some lovely friends on there. And, I'm a nice enough person to be glad that they are having a wonderful time./ My uncle is dying of cancer and has posted a picture a day, there's something bitter sweet about seeing this lovely man as his life draws to a close. Without FB I probably wouldn't have been in contact with him for years.

Yes, and I have friends in Australia and America - without Facebook our relationships am have dwindled to the odd phone call or Christmas card. Thanks to Facebook I can play scrabble with them, make jokes, see their children growing up in photos.

It is awesome. Anyone who doesn't get that either has a load of really cap people as 'friends' or is herself a crap person.

Don't use Facebook if you have feelings like that about other people. As easy as that. People put pics of their holidays because it makes them happy but if it doesn't make you happy looking at those pics you should nor be using it.

Ah yes, that'll be it.

I have to admit that there have been times in my life where fb has seemed like it was rubbing it in. So I stopped logging in. Like I do with fb.
But that was my problem, no one elses.

Sorry, like I do with MN.

I post pics when I get home. Call me paranoid but I don't like advertising the fact that my house is empty.

I like seeing my friends' holiday pics too.

Advertising to who though??

God we have covered this a million times haven't we - advertising to your friends and family Confused ?? - funny old friends you have if you fear they might burgle you whilst you are on holiday...

It is very weird this.

My Facebook page is private. Only my friends can see it. I would never ever accept as a 'friend' someone who I thought would want to break into my house and steal from me.

Why? Why? Why do people do this? Is it the same in real life? Do you nervously socialise with your local criminal fraternity and hide the silver before they come round?

IHeartKingThistle · 30/05/2013 23:56

No my friends are lovely thanks! It's when they comment on it and then 'so and so has liked KingThistle's photo' pops up on all THEIR friends' sidebars. To be fair that could potentially be a lot of people I don't know. Anyway I just feel happier not putting my holiday details online. Hope that's ok Wink.

I do understand that aspect but I guess it would be as likely or unlikely as someone driving past your house a couple of times and figuring that you weren't in on consecutive days and nights.

I don't know, we've been burgled at 4am with two cars on the drive and an alarm on the house - it is crap - I suspect I will still upload photos when I'm away though.

KingThistle, I'm pretty sure you can customise your settings though so that stuff doesn't come up on friends' friends' pages (I think I did that a while back..)

IHeartKingThistle · 31/05/2013 00:20

I will check that. I know I'm being over cautious but it puts my mind at rest!

Report
exoticfruits · 31/05/2013 06:55

I should prune your friends to the ones who don't know potential burglars!

Report
BlingLoving · 31/05/2013 07:03

An opinion where you basically state that anyone who uses Facebook is a show off, shallow twat is not valid and you are not entitled to it.

Report
exoticfruits · 31/05/2013 07:23

It always boils down to the fact that everyone is the same and you should do things the same way- I haven't a clue why.
I take my iPad on holiday, I upload my photos onto it at the end of the day- a safety precaution in case I lose them on the camera. It is the work of seconds to press 'share'. It doesn't mean I am wasting my holiday on the Internet!

Report
Spero · 31/05/2013 08:16

I have been burgled twice. One time I was in the house, asleep.

I would try not to have friends who are friends with burglars either.

Report
maddy68 · 31/05/2013 10:42

I do it as its my online album and I can share hoots with my family and those on holiday with me.

Report
lissieloo · 31/05/2013 11:12

KingThistle, you can ramp up your settings so that only your friends (or even the friends you want to) can see your activity. I have some people on a quite high setting, usually racist, misogynistic family members who I cant be arsed to delete.

If every waking minute of every day you are doing something worthy, learning Latin, helping blind puppies across the road etc, etc, then I will allow you to lecture me on how I chose to spend or waste my time.

If I want to spend a few minutes sharing photos with friends I will. I just don't get how this is for some people an opportunity to make moral judgments about how shallow and insecure I must be.

It is utterly baffling to me but I am afraid this thread, and all the countless others which have been and are yet to come, just reinforce my conclusion that the problem is not mine. To the pure, all things are pure.
