AIBU?

To be shocked and frustrated with the Islamophobia that's bursting out all over Facebook today?

Following the awful tragedy in Woolwich today.

I have seen everything from "We want our England back" to "Kick out all the foreigners" to "Islamic infiltration of the UK" etc. I have paraphrased as some of the stuff is so horrible I do not want to repeat it.

This is from normal everyday people and lots of them. Is this really what people think?

I, like most people am horrified by what has happened to this young soldier in Woolwich, but why is everyone so quick to blame an entire religion for it and to jump on the 'kick out all immigrants' bandwagon.

What can we do about it? Ignore, delete, post, report?

yes Infamouspoo fair enough in Southhampton but that doesn't make it true in every part of the UK. Perhaps that has been other posters experience where they live. Maybe in one of the London suburbs perhaps?

On a lighter note one of the students where I work went to look around a university and then complained because there were no other Asians. She lived in North west London.

GPs surgeries have always run late - in fact I would say the problem at my surgery was worse when I was a child than it is now.

Until last year I spent a significant amount of time at the GP's surgery with my grandmother. Again it was elderly people that held things up, including my grandmother, with her entering the country (illegally) from Gibraltar in 1935 and being mayor of a London borough, and her perfect English, life was just so difficult in that particular leafy South West London Suburb! Hmm

I laughed at the Guardian article last week about UKIP - with the couple (Ukip activists) moaning about Immigrants putting stress on the 'overcrowded' education system...without realising the irony - what with them having 6 kids and all Grin

Reports on the BBC news website now about anti-muslim backlash - can't link as in phone.

It makes for some very unpleasant reading.

yes of course elderly people do that too. My experience of my own GP on a Monday but I think there is probably some truth in the translation aspect as well. of course it would take longer.

Radio 4 has been broadcasting interviews with UKIP sympathisers now for a few weeks at different points. The first lot came after the local elections and the people they spoke to all sounded thick, nasty and bitter.

Then, after what happened this week, I heard the following

interviewer: 'What are your thoughts on what happened this week?'

bigoted man: 'Send em all home innit'

interviewer: 'Send who where?'

bigoted man 'Send em home, they don't belong here innit'

interviewer 'But this man was born here'

bigoted man 'well.....'

Anyone who uses the expression 'innit' should be sent very far away indeed.

The following comment sums the whole situation up for me

'The dividing line isn't between Muslims and everyone else; it's between terrorists and everyone else'

Hope you are getting some rest Cailin. Not being able to rest when you need it most is so tough. Glad your DH is there for support x

Things

Stop with the semantics, the people who formed the Taliban were often drawn from the Mujahadeen. Do you think they just handed back the weapons and funds we gave them or do you think they might has used them for furthering their "political" ambitions.

Sigh - you don't seem to want to accept that our actions added to the problem in the first place.

There are many people playing word games and using complete irrelavancies on this thread. Logical fallacies abound.
The fact is that there are an awful lot of racists about and it's bloody scary. It's scary for the women here, on this thread who have been abused by UKIP/EDL types, the women here who have had to tell their mother's not to wear their headscarves out. Because let's face it, those of you who are white can go out today and do your supermarket shop feeling safe and confident, knowing you will be judged for nothing other than a (possible) ready meal in your trolley. There is not one muslim woman, spanish woman, greek woman that can do that today. Not one, and those going on about schools/doctors etc. add fuel to that particular fire. Here and now is not the time for a discussion on immigration.
I was born here, went to a convent school in London in the sixties. I'm of Spanish descent, but I've been out today, a small market town in Norfolk. DD and I had two comments, neither particularly positive. So how are women who were born here, brought up here, schooled here, being treated?
As I said, all other discussions irrelevant at the moment.

I have encountered many British born Muslims here in Qatar who didn't cover at home because of abuse and spitting. By the same token, they were also kicked out of their Mosque for not covering, they couldn't win which is one of the reasons the family moved to an Islamic oh try although their main motivation was the "scum" who had children and sex out of wedlock.

There are racists the world over. If you are a minority (in a country or area), people with gawp and say stupid things.

My sister has had it all over the world, UK included and she's pale skinned. My black and sikh friends had horrible verbal abuse in N Africa, it was just assumed that my sister was a complete slapper (nope, a lesbian, but I'm not sure how well that would've gone down).

I've had crap in DHs ME homeland from a relative (by marriage and she's the muslim Ian Paisley) until other members of the family told her she was talking crap. She is an idiot and I accept that, and not representative of anything more that a brain-washed minority.

I live in East London Alemci. Our Gp surgeries are about the same as any leafy suburb. Sometimes late, sometimes not. Bugger all to do with immigrants.

I have lost the will to live with our own website, qatarliving, people ask questions like are the public busses safe and people reply yes as long as you don't mind sitting next to a smelly Indian. I can possibly blame my ulcer on that but feel a need to check it regularly.

Still think its rubbish to blame delays in gp surgeries on immigrants! Surgeries and clinics have run late for the last 15 to 20 years whether in all white areas or in inner city areas!
