I started a thread about a subject close to my heart - GM Food infiltrating into our supermarkets, see GMO.
However I was bombarded with male posts, not only attacking this subject, but me personally, even using the C word.! I'm no prude but as a first time poster to mumsnet I was really shocked and somewhat disappointed that this site could be used, by men, obviously, to demean and degrade us just because they may happen to disagree.
They were presumably fathers, some of daughters, or if not, we can safely assume that they do at least all have Mothers, and I felt like a fly on the wall at the worst kind of lads night out imaginable.!

Why is mumsnet allowing this to happen despite my reporting them?
More importantly why do men feel so threatened on a site which at least unites us in parenthood, to use such derogatory and offensive terms.?
Shouldn't we all unite in achieving the best future for our kids.?
Shouldn't men loose the attitude or go somewhere else to vent.!

If it was overwhelmingly well received why are you on here complaining.

Letvme think daily mail articles given as gospel, reaearch which was nothing to do with the topic and you wonder why people made fun.

And again cunt isn't necessarily used against us....

The word cunt is a name for a part of a woman's anatomy.

And cunts are useful things.

Binkyridesagain · 20/05/2013 23:15

Thanks ihave I was a little confused, too many cunts flying around.

I am wondering if cats should start a campaign to reclaim the word pussy? Or have I just overstepped the line with that thought?

I hate the c word and therefore won't type it.
I don't buy gm food, or do I mean non gm food? I neither know nor care much. If I'm honest I'm lucky I can afford to eat somedays!

Not sure my post contributes much tbh!

I get very tetchy when grown adults say "the c-word". For goodness sakes be a big person! The word you're looking for is "cunt", not "the C-word". It's just a cunting word like any other.

By this logic we should be saying, "I'm reading "War and the P-word. When I've finished that I'll play Chopin's Moonlight the S-word". See? Wrong, all wrong.

gordyslovesheep · 20/05/2013 23:25

Honestly! OP what tosh you speak. Your thread was not 'overwhelmingly well received'. Any proper debate on there was between people who were far better informed than you. They accidentally made the thread look more intellectual and academic than it had any right.

And I'm pretty sure that a heck of a lot of people on there were women. You were really sexist though; banging on about 'mothers' being responsible for feeding their offspring seven headed crocodile balls or something.

FJL203 · 20/05/2013 23:37

I've just re-read that thread and I'm really disappointed. I only counted 10 variations of cunt. Of mere cunt there was just 7 plus two cunts plural and one cuntish.

How dull. I was expecting a veritable explosion of cunts.

anneatkins · 20/05/2013 23:38

If we can't say cunt, can we say VAGEENIE?

That's what my daughter calls hers.

So: nonsensemum: You're acting like a vageenie.

nononsensemumof2 · 20/05/2013 23:40

For my sins I live in London, and all I know is that the C word is a term of abuse, by men to women.!
The worst kind of abuse. Meant only to harm and intimidate and denigrate.
This web site should not be allowing it in general conversation, end of!

"I was bombarded with male posts, not only attacking this subject, but me personally, even using the C word."

I had a look at your GMO thread, didn't read it particularly, just did a 'find' on all occurrences of the word "cunt". (You can use such words on MN, no need to use euphemisms.) The word was used by four posters to each other, in a semi-hijack/conversation between them; it was never used as an attack on you, or in reference to you at all. All four posters are, to the best of my knowledge, female.

You describe yourself as "a first time poster to mumsnet" ; as such you may be unaware of the following :

  1. Whilst the majority of MNers are female, some are male and all are welcome. To say, as you did "I was really shocked and somewhat disappointed that this site could be used, by men" sounds rather bigoted, IMO. To continue the sentiment with "obviously, to demean and degrade us just because they may happen to disagree" is insulting to male MNers. I have read many thoughtful posts from male MNers.
  1. Mumsnet pays us the great compliment of treating us as adults, so swearing is allowed/unmoderated. Over the years many "in-jokes" have come into being around swearing, one of which is calling other MNers, those who you are familiar with and josh with on various threads, a cunt. No offence is taken by the MNer being so called, because no offence is intended. In-jokes are hard to recognise if you are new to the site. Regardless, it is very clear that nowhere in your other thread are YOU being called a cunt.
  1. You placed your other thread on the AIBU board. It is expected that threads on that board will be posing the question 'Am I Being Unreasonable', which your thread did not. This is generally considered to be a bit of a bit of a (minor) faux pas.

I honestly do not understand why you are so convinced that these posters were men. Since they weren't, pretty much all of your OP of this thread is irrelevant. Your dismissal of critical posts on the basis that they must have been made by men - that attitude is deeply unhelpful, both to those criticising and to you. Something that you should ponder, perhaps.

JassyRadlett · 20/05/2013 23:45

Whereas your post (and follow ups) weren't so well received by those who can tell the difference between a gene, a virus and a 'harmful chemical'. Or by people who like their scaremongering to be accompanied by peer-reviewed science, not an exhortation to google the subject.

Honestly, it was well-received by people who agree with you, and the rest of us are men? Really?

Lj8893 · 20/05/2013 23:46

OP, you obviously live a very strange warped life if this is all you know of the word cunt. Very odd.

nononsensemumof2 · 20/05/2013 23:47

By all means do what you feel you have to do or say in your own home.
Supposedly for the means of education? Just dont think for one minute that it relates to anything in the REAL world, at present.
My advice would be to call it privates, for the long term, and emphasise something else, like chemistry or art.!
