I know it's done and dusted but I'm so fucking annoyed. How can they get away with their bonkers policy that if two people in a relationship earn just under the threshold they keep their CB but if one person earns over the threshold they lose it!?!

WinkyWinkola · 27/04/2013 22:11

Because they got elected into power

Oh wait. They actually didn't ... ..

DENMAN03 · 27/04/2013 22:16

YANBU.

It is a strange policy. I think they should look at the combined income of the household.

Still, they were voted in more than labour ever were so I guess they can do what they like. If its an unpopular law then they will get voted out next time.

Areyoumadorisitme · 27/04/2013 22:20

Yanbu at all. It really pisses me off that we lose it all yet if I earned £10k more and DH earned £10k less we'd get it in full.

candyandyoga · 27/04/2013 22:20

Problem is all the parties are shit. No party has a good leader that I want to vote for. Ed Miliband has zilch charisma. Nick Clegg is a nasty toad who I despise and Camerson too. They do nothing for mums who choose or have to stay at home either. Hate them all! Crap!

I think I have PMT... I'm in a badddd mood!

gordyslovesheep · 27/04/2013 22:20

they do not live in our world - they have no IDEA what ordinary peoples lives are like - YABU to expect them to have a clue

candyandyoga · 27/04/2013 22:28

I don't expect them to have a clue, well, maybe I expect a good politician - but that IS unreasonable! -Wink

YANBU,
I thought the Tories were the one party that might respect my right to be a SAHM and bring up my own DCs.

Angry Angry Angry

cheltenham84 · 27/04/2013 22:59

Yanbu. Funny how means testing universal age related benefits would not be worth it but this is.

ssd · 27/04/2013 23:01

oh so its unfair, your dh earns above 60k get friggin over it

ivanapoo · 27/04/2013 23:10

We are under the threshold but together our joint salaries when both working full time are over 60k. But this doesn't take childcare costs into account of course.

I'd rather one of us earned over 60k and we forfeited CB to be honest! One of us could be a SAHP on that salary.

CloudsAndTrees · 27/04/2013 23:14

YANBU. It makes no sense at all, but that doesn't matter. It was done that way so that they can claim they are attacking the 'rich' as well as the poor. The fact that those affected aren't actually rich, and the fact that they pay a decent amount of tax, is irrelevant. It's only been done as a feeble attempt to appease those with less than you, and so they can claim that cuts are across the board.

ssd · 27/04/2013 23:17

" It's only been done as a feeble attempt to appease those with less than you, and so they can claim that cuts are across the board."

and all it has done is give someone like the op with a dh earing above 60k the chance to complain about life's unfairness

boo friggin hoo

Dawndonna · 27/04/2013 23:18

Still, they were voted in more than labour ever were so I guess they can do what they like.
The last government was not a coalition.

Cloverer · 27/04/2013 23:19

YANBU, it's stupid and badly thought out.

Just like the bedroom tax - another policy that any idiot who thought about it for two minutes could see doesn't work.

ssd. You clearly are bitter.

Yes it is unfair that the family next door with the same income as us get cb and we don't purely because of the distribution of earnings between the couple.

ssd · 27/04/2013 23:27

you sound a lot more bitter than me areyoumad

Areyoumadorisitme · 27/04/2013 23:29

Really?? Confused
Anyway, I agree with the OP, it would not be unfair if it was based on household income but to base it on just one of the household doesn't make sense.

HoveringKestrel · 27/04/2013 23:32

BACK TO THE TOPIC YANBU, it is a stupid rule and should be re-evauluated......howver, I will say, there are a lot of people who work full time, pay tax full time, don't go into hospital full time and generally don't benefit from benefits, so don't complain when you do. You're a parent. Provide for your own child

I have worked very hard to get my higher rate tax payer career. I have also juggled things to make sure DH and I could have the family we always wanted. Hubby always supported me and when our youngest (DT) were born he became a stay at home dad.

All was going well until he died suddenly. Now I am a widow, with sudden childcare costs, paying higher rate tax and losing my child benefit.

I am not a single parent by choice. To give up my job would result in us losing our home as there is quite a large mortgage. This arbitrary loss of what was always a universal benefit has actually hit me hard - £200+ per month, something I can't really afford to lose.

NorthernLurker · 27/04/2013 23:52

Leaving aside all the ' you/your partner earns SO MUCH, just shut up and count your gold' bitterness that these threads always produce, yes this is a bad policy. Unfair and expensive to implement. Dh is the higher rate tax payer in this family. We have continued to claim and he will do the self assessment. We're rather looking forward to off setting what we'll lose slightly with the charitable donations etc that to date we haven't bothered with. By the time George is finished working out our tax position it will have cost him more to claw back than it saved.

ShellyBoobs · 27/04/2013 23:55

Just like the bedroom tax...

The 'bedroom tax' doesn't exist, though, does it. Calling it 'tax' is just left-wing propaganda.

I think the CB cut off is unfair but I suppose fewer people will face genuine hardship from that than because of the other cuts.

MeNeedShoes · 28/04/2013 00:01

Pisses me off. YANBU.
