DD (4) is very into what letters start words (she isn't in school yet) so I thought "great!" when Cbeebies started the Squigle the Alphabet programme!

How wrong was I?

Do Cbeebies seriously think that preschoolers can work out that Fox ends with 'X', rather than begins with it? DD likes to randomly state things like "Bus begins with 'B'" throughout the day, and we've had quite a few conversations like this:

DD: Fox begins with X
Me: No DD, fox begins with F and ends with X
DD: What's 'ends with'?
Me: (insert long winded explaination about letter sounds, words, looking at all the letters in the word, gets DD to say 'Fox' slowly and listen for the F and X sounds etc etc etc)
DD: (pause) Fox begins with X

repeat several hundred times

If DD fails her English Language GCSE in the distant future I will hold Squiglet personally responsible.

And while we're at it - they are not 'Squiggle sticks', they are crayons. Even DD knows that!

and breathe!

Come the revolution, he's first up against the wall. And I don't even have to watch CBeebies any more, but the depth of my hatred is such that it still prevails.

YANBU

Loulybelle · 18/03/2013 10:00

Ugh, i hated that show, biggest pile of shit on Cbeebies, and that beats anything with Justin in.

pictish · 18/03/2013 10:01

YANBU! Not for the reasons you state, but more because that thing is incredibly irritating in general. The way it talks and moves. Its face.

Pobblewhohasnotoes · 18/03/2013 10:10

YANBU

Although I hate Mike the Knight more. He is an idiot.

pictish · 18/03/2013 10:18

I dislike Waybuloo...they are ugly and pointless. Cheevies!

BuntyCollocks · 18/03/2013 11:39

YANBU. I hate the fucking song. And the stupid big monster thing. And it all, really!

FeckOffCup · 18/03/2013 11:56

I hate it too, the drawings on it are utterly shit and squiglet needs to shut the fuck up.

BrainSurgeon · 18/03/2013 12:00

Errrr..... I believe they say "X is for fox at the END of it's tail"?

Don't get me wrong I'm not a big fan but I think they at least tried to give a way to explain to kids

I don't mind Squiglett because I like drawing Blush

poozlepants · 18/03/2013 12:00

I always imagine that there is some really frustrated thespian stuck inside Squiglets bulky exterior who has decided to "act with his arms". I can't watch it- I used to make DS turn it off.

BrainSurgeon · 18/03/2013 12:01

Mike the Knight comes as a close second to Justin for me, in terms of hatred that is.

WorriedMummy73 · 18/03/2013 12:03

Eurgh, Squiglet. I hadn't noticed, until it was pointed out to me, his/her (is it a boy or a girl?) 'freakishly small hands', as my friend put it! I also hate the 'squiggle sticks'. Haven't seen the alphabet version of this show, but if it's anything like the drawing version it will be completely unrealistic in terms of what pre-school children can actually do. My Year 6 DD (then aged about 8) even threw down her 'squiggle stick' in disgust in trying to copy what Squiglet was drawing.

Cheap and nasty...

I always thought Squiglet was a girl.Confused

Piemother · 18/03/2013 12:07

Yanbu. It's a fucking crayon.

However I see your squiglet and I raise you woolly and ducking tig (whining brat) and Jesus, me too!!!! My ears bleed....

VictorTango · 18/03/2013 12:09

YANBU

WorriedMummy73 · 18/03/2013 12:13

Ahahahahahaha, Me Too - the show that makes Balamory look like Shakespeare! Are they actually still showing it? It's like the ensemble version of Big Cook, Little Cook, in that it won't go away and die quietly in the corner like we all want it too. The 'songs', Tina and her 'husband' Raymond, Mickey-John, the most childlike teacher on the planet, 'Granny' Murray (she's about 35 ffs!!!) and her grating platitudes as the 'adults' leave for work, the list is endless. And don't even get me started on Dr Juno leaving her dog with a childminder. Wtaf? The only way that show would make sense is if you dropped acid before you watched it!

Tubegirl · 18/03/2013 12:16

YANBU. Can I add the Numberjacks. I loathe the Numberjacks.

BrainSurgeon · 18/03/2013 12:19

Apologies for the hijack, but I was wondering what people think of the other new shows - Let's Play and Get Well Soon?
(I quite like them Blush)

SayCoolNowSayWhip · 18/03/2013 12:20

Waybuloo gets my hatred vote. How are kids EVER going to learn to speak properly with the hideous grammar and made-up words of those little balloon-head fuckers midgets?

Luckily DD is now in to much more intellectual Chuggington Grin

lakeofshiningwaters · 18/03/2013 12:21

I've trained ds (5) to shout 'It's not squiggling, it's drawing!' at that idiotic programme if we ever accidentally switch it on. If I ever see that monster thing down a dark alley, I won't be responsible for my actions...

Lets play is a great programme BrainSurgeon - I think it helps encourage imaginative play.

Get well soon imparts knowledge so must be good surely?

Sara and duck big hit in this house

WorriedMummy73 · 18/03/2013 12:23

As DS2 (now 4.5) won't have much to do with CBeebies anymore (he watches Tiny Pop instead - now there's a channel to make your eyes and ears bleed - it takes all the shit that every other channel has rejected, plus stuff that everyone else finished with about 10 years ago (currently showing Clifford The Big Red Dog, fgs)), I've only seen bits of Get Well Soon and nothing of Let's Play, so can't comment. Only, is Dr thingy a real Doc? Enquiring minds wanna know, to quote The Lost Boys.
