DD (4) is very into what letters start words (she isn't in school yet) so I thought "great!" when Cbeebies started the Squigle the Alphabet programme!

How wrong was I?

Do Cbeebies seriously think that preschoolers can work out that Fox ends with 'X', rather than begins with it? DD likes to randomly state things like "Bus begins with 'B'" throughout the day, and we've had quite a few conversations like this:

DD: Fox begins with X
Me: No DD, fox begins with F and ends with X
DD: What's 'ends with'?
Me: (insert long winded explaination about letter sounds, words, looking at all the letters in the word, gets DD to say 'Fox' slowly and listen for the F and X sounds etc etc etc)
DD: (pause) Fox begins with X

repeat several hundred times

If DD fails her English Language GCSE in the distant future I will hold Squiglet personally responsible.

And while we're at it - they are not 'Squiggle sticks', they are crayons. Even DD knows that!

How do you manage to fit modelling and doctoring into one lifetime? I'm seriously impressed at his career choices. We had Tivo, moved to Sky and only have basic kids channels now - I really miss Nick Jnr (Bubble Guppiiiieeeees!) and Disney Jnr...

We only watch Cbeebies on iPlayer so I get to pick.

We therefore do not watch:

Squiglet - for all of the above
Wooley and Tig - I'm arachnophobic. I am doing such a good job of not passing it along to DD1 that she adopts them and I'm not allowed to rehome. One episode of W&T and she screamed 'oh it's a scary spider'. Fuck off W&T!
Waybaloo - the kids walk out the room. What's the point?
Baby Jake - creeps me out.

We love:

Octonauts - bad health and safety but good on sea life. I like it!
Tree Fu Tom - 20 mins of babysitting.
Top Gear - technically not CBeebies but DD1 likes the silly men.

I Fucking hate it and I fucking hate it more now they've started doing letters. DD1 is learning phonics and that Squiglet fucker is using letter names. Bastard.

I am very grateful for the educational value of Let's Play and Get Well but mostly for the opportunity to ogle Sid and DrRanj

Husband and I were discussing Squiglet today. He says it's a pig, hence the name Squiglet, as in piglet. I say it looks like a great big stripy cat.

What's the MN consensus? Pig or cat?

I'm not sure I could articulate why exactly. It's a bit of a combo of Muffin's baby talk which I'm not keen on and the way they sing everything. I've no idea why I can't stand that as I love musicals. Completely irrational.

Squiglet, like Tree Fu Tom, annoys me because it is supposed to be male and yet is clearly voiced by a woman. Either make the character female, or use a male voice! Is it cheaper to use women rather than boys, or something?

RE: Squiglet and Fox.
The song does say "X is for Fox at the end of its tail" but if you play the games on the website, it's one programming code fits all, so you do hear "Can you find something that starts with X" - and there are pictures of a fox and an ox.
I also hate Squiglet. I hate the way it holds the fecking crayons right at the very end like a conductor's baton - although this is better in the Alphabet version, it does at least hold them a bit more realistically.

I also hate Cloudbabies - so twee!

I really hate 3rd and Bird too.
