DD (4) is very into what letters start words (she isn't in school yet) so I thought "great!" when Cbeebies started the Squigle the Alphabet programme!

How wrong was I?

Do Cbeebies seriously think that preschoolers can work out that Fox ends with 'X', rather than begins with it? DD likes to randomly state things like "Bus begins with 'B'" throughout the day, and we've had quite a few conversations like this:

DD: Fox begins with X
Me: No DD, fox begins with F and ends with X
DD: What's 'ends with'?
Me: (insert long winded explaination about letter sounds, words, looking at all the letters in the word, gets DD to say 'Fox' slowly and listen for the F and X sounds etc etc etc)
DD: (pause) Fox begins with X

repeat several hundred times

If DD fails her English Language GCSE in the distant future I will hold Squiglet personally responsible.

And while we're at it - they are not 'Squiggle sticks', they are crayons. Even DD knows that!

and breathe!

We`also hate Squiglet but have been watching it this lunchtime with DD 3.5. We discussed what it is and DD reckons 'a nice troll'.

Any programmes which have bad grammar or made up words make me shout at the telly. Squiglet, Waybuloo, Baby Jake...awful.

KatoPotato · 18/03/2013 13:36

I do think the parents of the 'revolving door' children on 'Get Well Soon' need investigating for Munchausens by proxy... Either that or they also fancy delicious Dr Ranj...

We love Abney and Teal.

BrainSurgeon · 18/03/2013 13:37

Aargh Rhyme Rocket bleurgh! Yeah that I definitely can't stand

HazelnutinCaramel · 18/03/2013 13:46

I loathe Rhyme Rocket. That fucking thing with the snout.

Also hate Waybuloo. Hippy rubbish.

Exhaustipated · 18/03/2013 13:52

Yabu- by far the worst is Numberiacks. Aaargh, it messes with my mind. Unfortunately, it is DS' favourite programme ever.

Grrrr.

noblegiraffe · 18/03/2013 13:54

My DS finally likes decent programmes like Octonauts and Andy's Wild Adventures. I've just had a baby. Please tell me I don't need to go back to dreadful shit like Waybuloo and sodding Night Garden.

PseudoBadger · 18/03/2013 14:04

Sarah and Duck is pure surreal genius :)

VictorTango · 18/03/2013 14:06

The song just stays in your head

Sarah and Duck
Sarah and Duck
Sarah and Duck

round and round your head Grin

PseudoBadger · 18/03/2013 14:07

Simple yet effective :o

elfycat · 18/03/2013 14:16

Sorry noblegiraffe Sad Grin

But try to remember that the point of ITNG is half an hour in which you can wee and possibly shower and MN. Let's not push the point and ask for a cup of tea.

Itsjustafleshwound · 18/03/2013 14:23

Medals for the worst kids shws have to go to Yo Gabba Gabba, Dora and Bubbleguppies ..

Kirk1 · 18/03/2013 14:33

I used to hate the Rhyme Rocket, but it kind of grew on me. DS2 likes it because he can dance along to the song. I think Squiglet is awful, I hate the way they talk through "squiggling" the letters. DS1 spent an afternoon after seeing "h" drawing h with a tiny hump and huge long stalk "because that's how they turn out if you do it how Squiglet says"

I think she is a female, and she's a monster. A friendly monster but that doesn't help.

DS2 likes the Numberjacks and Numtums. I find both terribly creepy.

MagratOfStolat · 18/03/2013 15:00

My DS loves Me Too Angry, The Numberjacks Angry, The Iconicles Angry and ITNG Angry.

He absolutely positively could not live without Show Me Show Me, Let's Play or Abadas. Seriously, Show Me Showme came on and he sat there in stone silence like a statue watching it until they went "SHOW ME SHOW ME YOUR GROOVY MOVES!" at which point he got up, grabbed my hand, yanked me off the settee adn started marching furiously on the spot! He even "freezes". He's hilarious! Same goes for Lets Play Themesong and all the songs from Abadas.

GalaxyDefender · 18/03/2013 15:16

Ugh, that whole "f is for fox at the end of his tail" thing really winds me up.
Unfortunately for me, DS' obsession with letters and the alphabet started just about the same time as this new series started up. There is NO way most preschoolers would be able to get their heads around the idea that fox doesn't start with x, it ends with x. We need to pick something that's easy to draw, and rename it something beginning with X to get rid of this whole problem!
The holding the pencil right at the end makes me rage too. I've been working on teaching DS how to hold a pencil properly, and Squiglet is not fecking helping.

"Happy happy get soon" (as DS calls it) is a big hit in our house though. Dr. Ranj is very popular, it seems Grin

lovelychops · 18/03/2013 15:24

Dr Ranj scares me. He's too perfect, with those perfect teeth. Couldn't believe it when I read on here he was a real doctor! I'd assumed he used to be in Hollyoaks or something Shock.

I can not and will not get on board with Tree Fu Tom. He's an idiot. Tree Fu as a concept is foolish.

lovelychops · 18/03/2013 15:24

Oh, and that little girl from Wooly and Tig is downright miserable!

God I need to get out more...

VictorTango · 18/03/2013 15:42

The Iconicles is the most frustrating programme on the planet. Nothing happens. And there's big long pauses all over the place.

I find the presenter creepy as well.

Pobblewhohasnotoes · 18/03/2013 15:49

Grandpa in my pocket.

I don't think I need to say more...

ArtVandelay · 18/03/2013 15:50

Chuggington is very upsetting to me. It just makes me think of Skynet in Terminator because the city is completely given over to the service and whims of talking machines. The trains haven't attacked the humans yet but I feel like its only a matter of time.

I really hope the citizens can form an effective resistance before its too late.

noblegiraffe · 18/03/2013 16:25

Like the idea of using ITNG as a toilet break, elfy. 'Oh, is that Iggle Piggle? That reminds me, I need a wee' Grin

Someone sold their soul to Satan to keep Grandpa on the air, pobble, it's the only explanation.

Piemother · 18/03/2013 20:22

Yabu rhyme rocket is great. Performance poetry and dd1 spat out a whole pirate poem today Grin it's quite annoying but I like that there's a poetry show.

I know who's inside one of the zingzillas - friend of a friend who does a show called babes with blades when she's not being a singing monkey!

I don't mind Balamory but Me Too takes the piss. The characters are too thick I can't bear it. It's on at lunch time in the Balamory slot. It all looks v dated and 90's too.

We like Octonauts and Tree Fu bit dd1 is getting v scared of Andy's wild adventures Hmm

Tubegirl · 18/03/2013 20:35

Noble, it's Ikea who keep Grandpa on the air - hasn't anyone else noticed that the entire set comes from Ikea!

WorriedMummy73 · 18/03/2013 21:19

Grandpa in my Pocket - I seriously hope James Bolam's being well paid. To think he's one of the Likely Lads...

TheBookofRuth · 18/03/2013 21:26

Me Too confuses me because it's clearly set in Newcastle but none of the actors are Geordies. I can't bear Dr Ranj, and the ZingZillas make me stabbity. Only the sodding Tweenies induce more rage.

fluffacloud · 18/03/2013 21:40

DD1 loves Get Well Soon, Squiglet and Cloudbabies. I can just about manage to watch those.

I loathe Max and Ruby - I....I just....I DESPISE IT!
