to think that this proves UKIP are just a bunch of morons?

I have no time for UKIP at the best of times, and can't believe how well they are polling. Then I heard this on the news just now - Geoffrey Clark, a UKIP candidate in Kent, wants all foetuses that are found to have Downs Syndrome or Spina bifida to be compulsorily aborted. Link below to this guy's 'personal manifesto'.

AIBU to think that this proves that UKIP are made up of a bunch of loons with mad ideas? The leadership are desperate to appear to be a reasonable mainstream party, just to the right of the tories, but it's clear to me that the majority of their members are ignorant, racist idiots.

I really find it hard to understand why anyone would vote for these people.

I really despise the use of moron to describe anyone- I think you lose the argument simply by word choice.

MmmnoodlesoupIsDueXmasEve · 18/12/2012 18:12

Is moron bad?

InNeedOfBrandyButter · 18/12/2012 18:12

I really really really really agree with you, even without hearing this story.

nightowlmostly · 18/12/2012 18:13

Ok, I just looked up 'moron' in the dictionary and found that the informal definition is someone 'notably stupid or lacking good judgement'. That is what I meant by it, I did not realise there was an offensive history behind the word.

InNeedOfBrandyButter · 18/12/2012 18:13

I think moron isn't harsh enough, try cunt or bastard OP Grin

MaryBS · 18/12/2012 18:13

He's now edited to say its not his opinion, just an option that should be discussed. Yeah right, major backpedal.

thebody · 18/12/2012 18:13

I find some Tories are morons and some not.

I find some socialists moronic and some not.

Lumping groups together like this is a bit silly really.

Think this view re abortion is vile though.

OddBoots · 18/12/2012 18:14

I've never been a UKIP kind of woman but even they must know how dreadful this is.

grovel · 18/12/2012 18:15

Moron is a term once used in psychology to denote mild mental retardation. The term was closely tied with the American eugenics movement. Once the term became popularised, it fell out of use by the psychological community, as it was used more commonly as an insult than as a psychological term.

londonone · 18/12/2012 18:16

His manifesto shows him up as rather lacking in intelligence, however it does not reflect what your OP says. I can only assume you have chosen to wilfully misrepresent the document in order to further your own views.

Northernlurker · 18/12/2012 18:17

Hve posted on another thread. It's not just disabled babies he has it in for. Apparently the over 80s should be offered euthanesia too......

AKissIsNotAContract · 18/12/2012 18:17

Sexist, racist, disablist and homophobic. What a likable chap Hmm

nightowlmostly · 18/12/2012 18:18

thebody I just feel that anyone aligning themselves with these sorts of people must either have not thought it through, and therefore must be a bit dim, or agree with a lot of their positions, in which case they are xenophobic and narrow minded.

OP posts:
SantaWearsGreen · 18/12/2012 18:19

I'm not surprised by how well they are doing at all. Its scary though.. the thought of them being in power sends a shiver down my spine. However people have lost faith in the big three and are looking for a party they feel listens to them and understands them.. In steps UKIP. A lot of people have issues with immigration so a party like UKIP speaks to them.

ForkInTheForeheid · 18/12/2012 18:19

Same sex marriage is an "aberration" and an "attack on the Christian church" but compulsory abortion and limiting treatment and encouraging euthanasia for those over 80 years old is A-OK?

This guy has to be a very enthusiastic and committed troll.

nightowlmostly · 18/12/2012 18:23

londonone Quote from the manifesto I linked to:

compulsory abortion when the foetus is detected as having Downs, Spina Bifida or similar syndrome which, if it is born, could render the child a burden on the state as well as on the family

Yes, after this statement is a disclaimer which states that this is simply an idea to be discussed, but what sort of person would really think that was at all appropriate?

Glitterknickaz · 18/12/2012 18:27

As you can imagine I PROPER love him, I really do.

I'm not going to get irate though and spoil a rare night off going to see Bill Bailey though.

londonone · 18/12/2012 18:27

You have just proved your own point. The disclaimer is there for a reason, I presume it is to try and prevent people like you Being wilfully misleading. Personally I think he has plenty of hideous views in that manifesto, but the ones you have homed in on are not being given as his views.

peaceandlovebunny · 18/12/2012 18:27

he's too old to be aborted. we'd better send him for euthanasia. by the liverpool care plan. i've seen that one in action and its horrible.

londonone · 18/12/2012 18:28

It's just lazy to quote something with no regard for context or meaning.

PessaryPam · 18/12/2012 18:29

One person in UKIP.

I understand that you don't share their politics but do you have to resort to pejorative terms?

I will probably vote UKIP at the next election and I don't give a flying whotsit what you think.

Vagaceratops · 18/12/2012 18:29

I started another thread about this in the news section.

He has been suspended from the party, but also endorsed as an excellent candidate for councillor.

AKissIsNotAContract You could add ageist to your list. He thinks everyone over 80 should get a free talk on Euthinasia :(

Vagaceratops · 18/12/2012 18:31

UKIP policy on those with learning disabled is to 'support congregate communities'. Thats a party wide policy.

ForkInTheForeheid · 18/12/2012 18:32

Londonone

The context is this :
"I do not, and UKIP does not, endorse any of these ideas: they are suggestions of matters for the review body to properly consider in light of the stated desire of all political parties to reduce the national debt."

IMO you can't just say something grossly offensive and then try to ameliorate it by saying that you're not really endorsing it, you just think it should be considered. As I said he's either a troll (who is successfully provoking a reaction) rather than a serious politician or he is someone who holds abhorrent views but lacks the courage to admit that.

SayMama · 18/12/2012 18:32

Isn't UKIP just BNP for middle class people? Confused
