The Smiths/Morrissey have a HUGE following outside the UK. It's not just Madchester style bands they have influenced, Pantera and System of a Down cite them as influences

LynetteScavo · 13/12/2012 21:42

I'm just bemused that people don't know who he is.

It's British culture, innit.

AtAmber · 13/12/2012 21:43

There is a programme about The Smiths on Radio 2 tonight at 10pm. Why don't you listen to it? You might learn something.

GingersarealwaysToms · 13/12/2012 22:04

Couldn't agree more with Xici and RedToothBrush. All these "it was before my time, I'm so yooouung" comments are absolute disingenuous shite. You know you're supposed to have heard of him. Gawd, Billy Holiday, The Kinks, Cream (bit random but I'm going for eclectic) were all before my time but can appreciate them and listen to them. The whole point of anything good: music, writing, visual art is that it's timeless.

redlac · 13/12/2012 22:05

Thanks AtAmber - listening to it now and pleased they started with Hamdsome Devil :)

CuriousMama · 13/12/2012 22:11

Wow just wow.

I'm a huge Smiths fan. Yes Morrissey has some issues and doesn't come across well in interviews but the music is amazing. Even if you didn't like his singing voice the actual music is amazing.

I used to listen to it when getting ready to go out with the lasses (80s) No one would get ready at mine as they couldn't stand it Xmas Grin

Morloth · 13/12/2012 22:16

In the 1980s I was living about 100km West of Bourke, NSW.

English pop music was not terribly relevant there.

SomeTiggyPudding · 13/12/2012 22:40
Wink
vivizone · 14/12/2012 01:00

I have never heard or seen this man or his band in my life. He has just popped up of nowhere. I'm in my early 30's.

laptopdancer · 14/12/2012 07:07

I'm with you morloth. (except not in Bourke, bit north from you)

laptopdancer · 14/12/2012 07:09

Wondering how many people on here know who Paul Kelly or Dave Faulkner are....

Northernexile · 14/12/2012 07:51

Not comparable in any way Laptopdancer, honestly!

laptopdancer · 14/12/2012 07:52

I know but they were the first ones that came to mind . Xmas Grin

Merrylegs · 14/12/2012 08:43

You know when the NME practically became the New Morrissey Express?

I propose a gathering of all the Mozzer threads and turning MN into one glorious Morrisseynet. Just for a day.

And after that we need never speak of the curmudgeonly old troubadour again. (Unless we want to. For he is the bees knees Wink).

PinkCashmere · 14/12/2012 09:06

Sorry, but I just have to..

"I am the son, and the heir
Of a shyness that is criminally vulgar
I am the son and heir
Of nothing in particular

You shut your mouth
How can you say
I go about things the wrong way
I am human and I need to be loved
Just like everybody else does"

The Smiths are legendary. Morrissey talks shite sometimes though, it's true. I think we should have a Smiths lyric-a-thon, just to show the sceptics how brilliant lyrically Morrissey can be.

SomersetONeil · 14/12/2012 09:13

But sorry to say Pink - those lyrics are only great if you think they're great.

Otherwise, well, meh. I've never read/heard those before and I realise that makes me an utter ignoramus as far as this thread goes. But I'm not exactlly blown away. :-/

PinkCashmere · 14/12/2012 09:19

Then listen to it.

Learn to love the Smiths for the genius they are! Wink

ReindeerOutdoors · 14/12/2012 09:23

Love The Smiths.

Just had to say that.

WandaDoff · 14/12/2012 09:45

I barely know who he is. He's only in my conciousness for the stupid remarks & comments he makes.

'Heaven knows I'm miserable now' is the only song of his that I can think of off the top of my head.
The Smiths pretty much passed me by completely, I'm 32.

I had no idea this was unusual. Shock

Don't believe he's above David Bowie - blimey!

I always thought he was a bit over rated - he had a a couple of good songs with very original lyrics.

I'm also a bit confused to this ooohh Morrissey. Xmas Confused
