I hate Morrissey. HATE him.

MistletoeAndTomHardyPlease · 12/12/2012 23:31

He sounds like a depressed cat being stood on ibuprofen every song.

MistletoeAndTomHardyPlease · 12/12/2012 23:31

*in not ibuprofen Confused

Arthurfowlersallotment · 12/12/2012 23:32

The Smiths and later Mozzer did not make depressing music. It's actually full of humour and clever observation. Much of it is genius in my opinion.

OP, yabu for starting such a thread.

Iwearblack · 12/12/2012 23:34

I wear black on the outside cause black is how I feel on the inside... And if i seem a little strange, that's because I am ....

Morrissey? Never heard of him ....

TuftyFinch · 12/12/2012 23:40

Morissey did to music what Shelagh Delaney did to playwriting.
Hand in Glove.
I understand people not liking him. I don't understand people not knowing who he is.

MrsTerrysChocolateOrange · 12/12/2012 23:43

Maybe you are too old rather than too young Xmas Grin

The Smiths are far and away the best band in the world, ever. However, Morrissey has a giant, huge stupid mouth, comes out with racist, sexist, ignorant crap constantly. I once had the chance to meet him, I loved The Smiths but decided not to meet him, since it would have been a massive disappointment.

Please YouTube Please, please, please let me get what I want.

Thanks for starting this thread, I am immersed in a YouTube Smiths-fest.

Why pamper life's complexities when the leather runs smooth on the passenger seat?

YokoUhOh · 13/12/2012 05:30

The Smiths are brilliant. Morrissey is a CU Next Tuesday.

When talking about The Smiths, can we please give an honourable mention to Mike Joyce and Andy Rourke (rhythm section), who bring a bit of funk to proceedings (Barbarism Begins At Home, Smiths fans...?) and who were royally screwed over by Morrissey in court. What did the judge call him at the time? Truculent and unreliable, IIRC.

redlac · 13/12/2012 06:34

I fuckin LOVE Morrissey. Yes he opens his mouth and his opinions are generally bollocks HOWEVER he knows exactly what he is doing and there are at least 3 threads about his opinions on here - do you think that ANY of the current batch of singers will have that effect in 20 years time?

peaceandlovebunny · 13/12/2012 06:38

peace I NEED DETAILS NOW

nothing to do with me! i was living elsewhere at the time.

my brother knew a lot of people and some would go round to my parents' house.its all a long time ago but i think the story went that his smiths mate/s came along and my mum threw one of them out for wearing make up. she'd been through the bowie era with me - she was used to the idea of men in make-up. i don't know what her problem was. she was volatile in those days. i always thought it was morrissey she threw out but i wasn't there...

he came to the place i work when he was 'revisiting old haunts' one time. he gave me that 'you know who i am' look, but he was wrong. i had to ask someone.

re court - i heard mike joyce was glad it was over and is making a good living...

RobinsBaubleSparkles · 13/12/2012 06:57

I have heard of Morrissey and I have heard of The Smiths, although I haven't got a clue what they sing. I might, if I heard one think "oh yes, I've heard that."

I'm 29 though and if they split in 1987 I would be too young to remember.

GambasAndCava · 13/12/2012 06:57

Anyone in their early 30s or older must have spent their teenage/twenties with their head in a box to not know who Morrissey/The Smiths are, even if they were into pop/dance music at these ages.

They were MASSIVE and continue to be popular today. Morrissey was and is a twat though.

redlac · 13/12/2012 07:01

ROBINS remember last years John Lewis Christmas advert with that awful whiney woman and a piano? THAT was a fuckin awful version of one of The Smiths most beautiful songs

Kytti · 13/12/2012 07:05

Ah. The Smiths. I am of that generation. I didn't get them for ages. He's OK, but I never really understood all the hype.

Then again, what do I know?

My hairdresser had no idea who Nick Cave was the other day. I felt ancient. Xmas Confused

PessaryPam · 13/12/2012 07:08

Morrisey is a a total cock!

Valdeeves · 13/12/2012 07:13

I think you probably had your hands full when he was around and didn't watch much TV!

FiercePanda · 13/12/2012 07:16

I'm 29 and have loved the Smiths and some of Morrissey's solo work for as long as I can remember.

Moz is a total fannybaws, though. Stupid boy.

XiCi · 13/12/2012 08:13

I love the way some people say, oh I'm in my 20s so wouldn't remember.
As if none of us have any knowledge of anything that happened before our birth date. Like saying Elvis who?? The Beatles??? There was a 2nd World War?? Oh that must have happened before I was born so I couldn't possibly know!! Don't know whether its funny or just really sad
OP you seem really pleased with yourself that you are so ignorant about music. Have a listen to the Smiths, they are truly genius, no matter what your opinion of Morrissey might be. As for the age thing, I went to see Smiths Indeed recently thinking it woukld just be all oldies like me and was quite surprised that it was mostly people aged 18-24 there. The music is timeless
Love your comment OP about the varied tastes of your dd from the wanted to blink 182 Grin. That has really made my day

noddyholder · 13/12/2012 08:19

Soundtrack to my youth love him!

LucilleBluth · 13/12/2012 08:33

God of all Mancs and the holy one to lovers of good music :)

Personally I love his big mouth, yes he spouts some shite but wouldn't it be boring without people like Mozza.

Bunbaker · 13/12/2012 08:38

The Smiths were OK instrumentally - the guitarist was brilliant, but as soon as Morrissey opened his mouth and sang out of tune I mentally switched off.

I'm so miserable now,drone, drone.

I am being unreasonable now Grin

GalaxyDefender · 13/12/2012 09:10

Never understood the whole Smiths thing. I'm in my mid-twenties, so it was a bit before my time, but every song I've heard of theirs is crap. The guy can't even sing, he just droned through all the songs. Don't get how that's good, or why so many people loved them.

Then again, I constantly get incredulous looks when I say I don't like any Beatles songs either, so clearly I'm some sort of hipster weirdo Grin
