You can't possibly quantify statements like that though. There's no way of knowing what would have happened without the smiths.

I'm pretty sure decent music prevails regardless of who was in the charts 5 years earlier.

VivaLeBeaver · 12/12/2012 22:34

great songwriter and singer

Shame he's a bit of a twat.

Northernexile · 12/12/2012 22:35

You are unlucky if you don't know his music. I am 31, and reckon. I have decent taste in music too Xmas Grin

IWipeArses · 12/12/2012 22:35

He comes out with some shit but he is huge! Your DS may have good taste, but it's limited.

Meglet · 12/12/2012 22:35

Morrissey is a bit of a twerp.

But 'London' is the mutts nutts.

DoingitOnTheRoofTopWithSanta · 12/12/2012 22:36

You're pronouncing it wrong then. Or something.

VivaLeBeaver · 12/12/2012 22:36

Well you can kind of quantify it when the lead singers from those bands have said that The Smiths were such a massive influence on them and inspired them to form bands, write songs, etc.

saintlyjimjams · 12/12/2012 22:36

DS3's favourite is but because the lyrics aren't hugely suitable for a 7 year old I play him

SomersetONeil · 12/12/2012 22:36

YANBU.

I'm 39 next week 38 and I wouldn't recognise him in a line-up, nor could I name a single Smiths or Morrisey song. I acknowledge that if some of them were played to me, I'd probably recognise them.

The whole thing blithely passed me by and I do not 'get' him/them at all. DH is a huge Stone Roses fan and does not understand why I don't fall about agog and in awe whenever they are discussed or their music played. Meh...

I'm not British, if that makes any difference. Well I am actually, but my citizenship was only acquired less than a decade ago and I don't live there anymore, so this whole shizz passed me by.

IWipeArses · 12/12/2012 22:37

You've never heard of Radiohead?

DoingitOnTheRoofTopWithSanta · 12/12/2012 22:37

Varied taste from the wanted to blink 182

Grin
threesocksfullofchocs · 12/12/2012 22:40

I have heard of radiohead(did I miss their name sorry) could not say what they did though.
I can't see the link between Oasis and him though.
Oasis channel John Lennon....

Do you mean Van. I had a boyfriend once who was obsessed. I think that's why I didn't think we had a future together. He's OK - but not life or death. Not like Marc Bolan Xmas Grin

peaceandlovebunny · 12/12/2012 22:41

morrissey? i know who he is. my mum threw either him or one of his band members out of her house. i think that's the only person she's ever thrown out.

Noel Gallagher has talked quite a bit about been influenced by The Smiths.

I'm always amused when people say 'never heard of them' as though it means the famous person isn't so famous and not that the person isn't just showing up their lack of knowledge.

There isn't anything inherently wrong with not having heard of very famous, very influential, culturally significant people, but it is nothing to be proud of. Grin

TheOneWithTheHair · 12/12/2012 22:45

Love The Smiths but Morrisey is an idiot. I have some brilliant songs floating round my head now so thanks threesocks.

RedTinsel · 12/12/2012 22:45

I love The Smiths and Morrissey. He does say a lot of twattish stuff some times.
You've missed out if you've never heard The Queen is Dead.

saintlyjimjams · 12/12/2012 22:46

threesocks what music do you listen to? :intrigued:

(We are mostly playing the frigging soundtrack from Oliver at the moment at ds1's insistence. If I hear Consider Yourself one more time I shall scream, I shall scream).

piprabbit · 12/12/2012 22:46

You must be very proud OP, to feel the need to come and stealth boast about gaps in your musical knowledge.

JenaiMathis · 12/12/2012 22:47

I was going to shout 'heathen' but it occurred to me that I regularly have to ask who the fuck younger performers are, including ones who are apparently important.

The Smiths were hugely influential. Massively. Up there with Bowie for sure.

Although eye-rollingly, toe-curlingly daft, in the utter knob stakes Morrissey is comfortably beaten by Macca. And would've been by Lennon if he hadn't died
