A Famous Virgin.

(I should think so, anyway!) Xmas Grin

bigmouthstrikesagain · 13/12/2012 10:47

Urgh Oasis I remember when they were no marks playing in a park, getting cans of lager thrown at them by pissed up Prestonians! Thoses were the days Grin

SallyCinnamonandNutmeg · 13/12/2012 10:48

Don't find it unreasonable you have never heard of him but actually a bit unbelievable.... As many many posters above have mentioned, he may have a penchant these days for making highly controversial & offensive comments designed to anger legions of mums (and others!) - but in the 80s he was a true innovator, an inspirational lyricist and a seminal musician.

bigmouthstrikesagain · 13/12/2012 10:51

Manchester so much to answer for! Wink

RedToothbrush · 13/12/2012 10:54

Selected Morrissey quotes for the MN Judge, Jury and Executioners to devour!:

On Bandaid
"One can have great concern for the people of Ethiopia, but it's another thing to inflict daily torture on the people of England"

On China (interview with Guardian from 2010 so post NME row)
"Did you see the thing on the news about their treatment of animals and animal welfare? Absolutely horrific. You can't help but feel that the Chinese are a subspecies."

On being racist
"Not everybody is absolutely stupid. Why on earth would I be racist, what would I be trying to achieve?"

On the Royals (from 2011)
"I don't think the so-called royal family speak for England now and I don't think England needs them. I do seriously believe that they are benefit scroungers and nothing else. I don't believe they serve any purpose whatsoever."

On life
"Nothing is important, so people, realising that, should get on with their lives, go mad, take their clothes off, jump in the canal, jump into one of those supermarket trolleys, race around the supermarket and steal Mars bars and kiss kittens."

On Richard Madeley
"He referred to me as an 'insufferable puffed-up prat'. This is a bit rich coming from a man who actually married his own mother."

On Vic Reeves
"If met Vic Reeves, I'd have no desire other than to smack him in the face."

On being vegetarian two days after the Brevik Massacre
"We all live in a murderous world, as the events in Norway have shown, with 97 dead. Though that is nothing compared to what happens in McDonald's and Kentucky Fried Chicken every day."

On Animal Welfare
"With people in the world such as Jamie Oliver and Clarissa Dickson-Wright there isn't much hope for animals.?

On the Brit Awards
"The Brits are ghastly. I never would accept a Brit. It would be like Laurence Olivier being happy getting a TV Times award."

On his solo career
"The press only write about me in terms of the Smiths story, and the fact that I've had three solo number one albums - or even 25 years of eventful solo activity - is never mentioned anywhere. Odd."

On his sex appeal
?I think I must be, absolutely, a total sex object. In every sense of the word."

On Mental Health
?I have seen one or two psychiatrists. They just sit and nod and doodle.?

On dance music
?It's the refuge for the mentally deficient. It's made by dull people for dull people.?

On blandness
?Don't talk to me about people who are 'nice' cause I have spent my whole life in ruins because of people who are 'nice'.?

On being controversial
?I've never intended to be controversial but it's very easy to be controversial in pop music because nobody ever is.?

On being miserable
?What's the first thing I do when I wake up in the morning? Wish I hadn't.?

On life
"Sometimes I wish I was just a simple drunkard."

bigmouthstrikesagain · 13/12/2012 11:05

That Richard Madeley quote is genius - I am sure we could come up with a raft of bollocky quotes from him! Grin

But yep Moz is a twat much of the time these days but I can't bring myself to hate him unlike Richard Madeley

GreatCongas · 13/12/2012 11:12

Varied taste from the wanted to blink 182 Grin
If you had said from the wanted to pantera I would agree that's varied
Or from Kylie to slipknot then yeah

Morriseys music is great
Morrissey himself is a twat

snuffaluffagus · 13/12/2012 11:15

:O I'm amazed you don't know who Mozz is. I adore his music and his antics amuse me.. but yes, he's a twat and says stupid things for effect but I still love him.

I think it was Pete Paphides who said recently "every now and then, Morrissey just wants us all to look at him for a while."

GreatCongas · 13/12/2012 11:22

Also not sure of crediting the smiths with the madchester scene. Happy Mondays were pre smiths and James were the same year . New order were also before.

HairyGrotter · 13/12/2012 11:23

Perfect, absolutely perfect

I think it was Pete Paphides who said recently "every now and then, Morrissey just wants us all to look at him for a while."

JenaiMathis · 13/12/2012 12:38

That is indeed excellent Xmas Grin

THIS

On being controversial
?I've never intended to be controversial but it's very easy to be controversial in pop music because nobody ever is.?

Is why he is the way he is - he knows that he can come out with statements to be controversial and that papers like the Guardian will print them.

Is it only me who would shag him senseless? From a bequiffed skinny runt to portly old man I still would over and over again Obvs I would have to gag him

redlac · 13/12/2012 13:28

I adore James too but I think that Moz has to take credit for getting their name out there by pushing for them to be The Smiths support band and doing live covers of one of their songs

borisjohnsonshair · 13/12/2012 13:40

"spending warm, summer days indoors ... writing frightening verse to a buck-toothed girl in Luxembourg".

Don't we all know someone like that ??

RedToothbrush · 13/12/2012 14:12

I have come across plenty of people who would shag him senseless over the years unfortunately rediac. They also all happen to be mad as a box of frogs including one who did actually hang outside his house on a regular basis.

redlac · 13/12/2012 14:18

red I will put my hand up to being as mad as a small box of frogs then :) Its Mozza's fault I will only lust after skinny men with no bum in their jeans

Inkymalinky · 13/12/2012 14:49

The man is a genius.

laptopdancer · 13/12/2012 15:02

Im with the OP. Im 47 and had no clue who he was.

Tanith · 13/12/2012 19:33

DH loves the Smiths; quotes their lyrics all the time. He wants "Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now" at his funeral (I keep threatening him with "O Happy Day" Wink).

I'm with Bunbaker, though. Music is great until Morrissey opens his mouth and starts droning.

I liked How Soon Is Now and one or two others. I thought Suffer Little Children was sick.
Mostly, I thought they sounded as though Morrissey was singing a completely different song to the rest of the band.

maleview70 · 13/12/2012 21:05

Half of what he says I reckon is out of complete boredom during the interviews.

He has probably been interviewed a thousand times and these questions will raise their head in one form or another everytime:

"so will the smiths reform?"
"what do you think of the royal family"
"are you gay?"
"what do you feel about the treatment of animals?"
"why haven't you got a record contract?"
"where do you live nowadays?"
"are you still in contact with johnny marr?"
"what are your views on Jamie Oliver/Gordon Ramsey/Hairy bikers etc etc

Journalists are so tedious in their questionning he must be bored shitless.

Some of his views are ridiculous but PETA is very important to him and his love of animals is something that surely deserves some applause.

Hunting animals for human pleasure can never be right.

threesocksfullofchocs · 13/12/2012 21:17

Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now
I have heard that.
sadly
he has a very annoying voice.

I think The Smiths coud only be considered to be important/influential to those who like that kind of Madchester music. In overall terms I don't think they've had much impact - are they known outside the UK?

I know who they are, have seen them live, don't particularly like their music but it doesn't surprise me at all that other people don't know who Morrisey is.

And as a general point unless your're talking about President Obama/The Queen or Simon Cowell no one is ever unreasonable not to have heard of someone.

threesocksfullofchocs · 13/12/2012 21:28

Fakebook funny but wrong on both accounts.
