I can't believe how uptight some people are getting because one person hasn't heard of or gushes over The Smiths or indeed Morrissey.

RedToothbrush · 13/12/2012 09:26

Even if you are in your 20s you SHOULD know who Morrissey is, if you have deep love of music, particularly Indie music but his influence isn't restricted to just that genre nor indeed Manchester. But for starters on a very basic level: No Smiths = No Stone Roses = No Oasis (though perhaps more for the Johnny Marr side of things)

However Morrissey's lyrics were intellectual, challenging and political - perhaps in a way that punk had first started but he took it one step further in depth. He was closer to an old style traditional poet than a pop star. He did tend to sing about miserable people and the dreariness of life. He therefore tended to appeal to intelligent moody teenagers who wanted to stay in their bedroom and thought the world hated them - but often missed the sarcasm, witt and irony of his lyrics. He was probably inspired the whole Emo movement.

You don't actually have to like Morrissey's music; you just need to know who Morrissey is. Morrissey and The Smiths are one of the major junctions on the road map of British Music. I definitely wouldn't put him above Bowie on the influence list, but he does deserve a pretty high rank.

I go between phases of liking what he did, and thinking The Smiths/Morrissey are utter dirge.

His unique way of singing that bore no relation to the tune is brilliant; in fact you can sing any article from the newspaper in Morrissey fashion to pretty much any Smiths tune and it fits.

On a personal level though Morrissey was and definitely still is a Professional Cunt who makes a living out of being Miserable Bastard with the sensitivity of a T-Rex in a China Shop (forget the bull, hes on a whole different scale).

His controversial views have led to him being labelled as a racist (he had an ongoing dispute with NME for years until they finally settled up out of court when Morrissey decided he probably should get a bit more publicity for his flagging career and could be bothered to get round to suing them four years after making the comments that sparked this particular controversy, though he'd made remarks in a similar vein for many years previously). He's possibly the most well known and vocal anti-royalist, so his remarks about Kate aren't unexpected. He's a militant vegetarian and has said he understood why activists use violence and last year made this tasteful remark two days after the Brevik Massacre "We all live in a murderous world, as the events in Norway have shown, with 97 dead. Though that is nothing compared to what happens in McDonald's and Kentucky Fried Chicken every day."

As I say. Cunt. Of the Highest Order of Cunts.

And thats probably how he'll be remembered rather than as being a musician.

Pretty sad legacy for a man of his talent tbh.

Mockingcurl · 13/12/2012 09:29

The Smiths are bloody amazing. My 23 year old ds plays their music constantly.

Btw, wasn't it a gladioli in his back pocket, not a daffodil?

YoHoHoAndABottleOfSherry · 13/12/2012 09:32

YANBU, I am mid thirties, and also didn't know who he was. Well I had a vague idea he was a singer, couldn't have named the band, or even if it was a band or solo artist, couldn't have named or hummed anything he wrote/played, haven't heard of the Smiths...

DH despairs of my total lack of interest in popular culture Xmas Grin.

Morloth · 13/12/2012 09:33

How can you be an 'important' singer?

I am 35 and had never heard of him.

HairyGrotter · 13/12/2012 09:36

Any fan of decent music will know of Morrissey. The Smiths are a seminal band in UK music history, simple as. Their music is STILL excellent and forever will be. They paved the way for many bands, including some of the shite drivel that is knocking about now.

Morrissey himself is a bellshine, but The Smiths/Morrissey (some of it, lets be honest) stuff is important to music!

YABFU

Morloth · 13/12/2012 09:39

Must be a UK thing.

redlac · 13/12/2012 09:41

MockingCurl I've seen photos of him with gladioli, daffodils and even a bush in his back pocket

You can been an Important Singer if you (and your band) influence GENERATIONS of musicians. Like someone said - no Smiths = No Stone Roses = No Oasis. Bands like that are vital to the British music industry and will produce future inspirational music

NagooHoHoHo · 13/12/2012 09:44

People say 'I like all kinds of music me, I've got really eclectic taste' when what they mean is, '[insert pop radio station] have never played a song I didn't like' ALL THE TIME. It drives me nuts.

Anyway YANBU not to know who he is, YABU to dismiss him because the music isn't your cup of tea. Just because you don't like it doesn't make it culturally irrelevant.

Anniegetyourgun · 13/12/2012 09:44

Well, I'm in my 50s and had heard of him/them, but only because he keeps being quoted in the news. Just went to the link someone kindly provided earlier and listened to about half of "please let me get what I want" and decided I really hadn't missed much unless the majority of their output is a lot more interesting than that. However, I can see what someone else said about it expressing one's feelings at a certain time of one's life so that will be why some people feel it's so influential, whereas others (emphatically including myself) do not and probably never will get it. No doubt I am moved by a lot of stuff that would leave many of older or younger generations going "wtf?"

As for saying that without the Smiths there would be no Oasis, you say that like it's a bad thing. DS1 was well into Oasis when he lived with me and didn't have headphones. Nuff said.

If "No Smiths = No Stone Roses = No Oasis", can I go back in time and kill Morrissey? Grin

Morloth · 13/12/2012 09:49

Yeah, but what would actually have happened if they had never happened? Music would be different? So what? Still don't see how you can be an 'important' singer.

Anyway, had never heard of him or The Smiths and now I think it is a nob. So there you go.

RedToothbrush · 13/12/2012 09:50

You'd also loose out on a lot of other great bands Galaxy. And if you kill Morrissey how do you know we wouldn't be subjected to another even more obnoxious turd?

HairyGrotter · 13/12/2012 09:51

This thread makes me both happy and sad. Much like The Smiths music Xmas Grin

Anniegetyourgun · 13/12/2012 09:52

RedToothbrush, are you suggesting it is possible for there to be a more obnoxious turd? I do hope you're wrong.

HairyGrotter · 13/12/2012 09:55

Who could fill those big Obnoxious Turd Morrissey boots?

Arcticwaffle · 13/12/2012 09:56

I would say yabu, and the thought adults not knowing the Smiths makes me feel very old, but then I'm a bit hazy on who the Kardashians are, the name is everywhere but I've no idea what they do. or if they're a band.

RedToothbrush · 13/12/2012 10:00

Its a scary thought its it?

Mind you without the likes of Morrissey you'd have a whole in music history in this country which would leave Stock, Aiken and Waterman unchallenged. Wet, Wet, Wet would have been cutting edge. The Spice Girls and Take That would have been even more popular. And I think we'd be listen to a lot more American based music. Not that in its self, thats a terribly bad thing, as theres some great American bands out there... until you start thinking about how much modern American music also took influence from what was going on over in Britain and took back all the influences from The Smiths and all the bands that were in turn influenced by them.

Its a pretty bleak picture then!

RedToothbrush · 13/12/2012 10:01

hole not whole*

TeWisBeenNargledByTheMistletoe · 13/12/2012 10:02

I've heard of him, bit am meh both about the smith and the bands they influenced (oasis for example are crap).

I do like a lot of indie music but not that particular sub-genre, and i can see how others who don't like it wouldn't''ve heard of him.

Also, he clearly talks bollocks.

TooManyDicksOnTheDancefloor · 13/12/2012 10:08

YABU for spelling his name wrong in the title! Morrissey is amazing. Some of his comments are contraversial but having read what he said it, was more a dig at the royal family than anything else.

Morloth · 13/12/2012 10:19

Nah, he just piggy backed on the tragic death of a woman in order to get his name (back?) in the spotlight. Like he gives a fuck about that poor nurse. What a prick.

It worked too, I had never heard of him and now I have.

bigmouthstrikesagain · 13/12/2012 10:31

Ironically only last night I introduced my daughters aged 4 and 6 to the delights of the Smiths via You Tube ('How Soon is now' and 'bigmouth strikes again') they declared themselves fans then asked for 'Toxic' by B Spears (it is on Wii dance).Grin

The Smiths were an important early influence for me, showing how music could be intelligent, witty and have a lush guitar sound but they had split before I had really got into them - I like some of Morrissey's solo work (Suedehead and You're the one for me Fatty! for instance) but I have to say my huge admiration is reserved mainly for his work with the Smiths. I regard him now much as one does a well respected but embarrassing aging Uncle, who comes out with some cringe-worthy shite at times but is still worthy of your admiration. Music is such an important part of my life and The Smiths, especially Morrissey and Marr have had a huge impact, not just on me, their partnership has produced influential and inspirational albums that are still listened to now and I am sure will continue to be enjoyed by future generations.
