AIBU to expect DM NOT to buy DD 'personalised' things with her name spelt incorrectly!?

I'm pregnant and hormonal so don't really care if I sound ungrateful but DD is 4.9 and has leant to spell her first name and is having a good go at her surname.

She has just started in a new school, has been there a week and they sent a homework book home on Fri on which they spelt her name incorrectly, so I took the label off and replaced it.

DM turned up with a random present for DD today on which has her 'name' but it's spelt incorrectly. It's not the first time this has happened. I mentioned the homework book to DM who told me I must tell the school of their mistake which I thought was a bit hypocritical given 2 seconds previously she'd done the same thing!

Don't wish to out myself but we're talking calling a child hollie but deciding to spell it holly. IYSWIM, DD's is slightly different to this and I've never seen anything with our spelling on it but that's partly why we chose an alternative.

So AIBU in not wanting these personalised gifts that are in fact not at all personalised with the right name!?

OP posts:

Oh - and it's not that hard to get properly spelt personalised stuff, you might not get in in the shops but easy on internet

Annunziata · 12/11/2012 20:07

Jake and Jane are different names though.

Jane and Jayne are the same.

Happylander · 12/11/2012 20:09

Is it just a shop bought personalised gift or has she especially ordered it though? If it is just shop bought then maybe she couldn't find the correct spelling and bought the nearest.

honeytea · 12/11/2012 20:09

Why did you choose a difficult spelling? I can understand if it is a cultural thing but if you just wanted a mote unusual name then yabu.

diabolo · 12/11/2012 20:12

I'm 40 and people who I've known for years still spell my name wrong (it can begin with a J or a G). It annoys me no end that they can't be bothered to remember what letter mine begins with, so YANBU.

lurkerspeaks · 12/11/2012 20:15

Difficult one.

My name is one which can legitimately be spelt in various ways (like the Isobel, Isabel) example up thread. When I was little I fought and fought for people to spell my name correctly but also longed for personalised stuff and as a pre-internet child quite happily accepted stuff with the 'wrong' spelling on it.

As an adult I am just relieved that people manage to call me any variant on Isobel and not Isadora or any other I name.

Only gets tricky where e.mail is concerned.

Uppermid · 12/11/2012 20:18

Yanbu at all. And as for those who say its the thought that counts, it's not, not when it's your own gm who can't get it right.

I have an unusual name (well it was when I was growing up) I would rather had nothing than something with the wrong name or incorrect spelling.

SooFrustrated · 12/11/2012 20:20

YANBU
a granny should recognise that the spelling is important- whatever your reasons for choosing it. My Mil consistently wrote DD's name incorrectly on cards because I hadn't chosen the bible spelling. It drove me crazy, but she eventually got the message - luckily just before DD was old enough to realise.

TiggyD · 12/11/2012 20:21

If your child's name is written 'Hollie' by you then you have spelt it wrong. Holly is spelt H-O-L-L-Y.

Best wishes from Hgjhjkafdkj. (Pronounced Tiggy)

TiggyD · 12/11/2012 20:22

Hmmm. Diablo is a Jill/Gill eh?

EugenesAxe · 12/11/2012 20:24

Point her in the direction of GLTC - you can personalise every bloody thing on there it seems, and you get to type it in.

I'm a bit Biscuit on this; I think she should more understanding, but am with squeakydoor a bit - I don't really like traditional names that have been messed about with to try and prove something.

OHforDUCKScake · 12/11/2012 20:30

YANBU MIL spell DS2's name wrong all the time, Id not want to use something that had his name wrong on it.

fluffygal · 12/11/2012 20:31

tiggy or Jemma/Gemma.

degutastic · 12/11/2012 20:36

My name is the correct spelling of a commonly incorrectly spelled name (has been misspelt for quite a while so is in common usage, but is not technically correct). It annoys the life out of me when people misspell it as mine name is the correct spelling, and the alternative is just wrong. So in my eyes, YANBU, I would have found a misspelt personalised gift hurtful at that age.

now I just lecture people on ancient Greek and spelling Grin

KittieCat · 12/11/2012 20:39

My name is spelt correctly as far as I am concerned and it bothers me when people don't make the effort to spell it right. For example they type my email address correctly then misspell my name in the message.

So, IMHO, YANBU at all, it'd drive me crazy as its not a personalised gift unless it has your DDs name on it - with the correct spelling.

apostropheuse · 12/11/2012 20:40

I find it interesting that the OP said her DM (which I believe is her mother) bought the gift with the wrong spelling on it, but several people have posted to tell the MIL.....etc

anti MIL on a thread not about a MIL ...you've got to love MN

KittieCat · 12/11/2012 20:40

"it's" sorry...

JoshLyman · 12/11/2012 20:40

YANBU - if the name is spelt wrong on the gift, then she shouldn't have bought it. It's NOT her name. You can't just say she bought the closest thing and therefore it's ok. It's NOT her name!

However, inadvertent mistakes such as the school book is something you've going to have to get used to if you've picked an unusual spelling of a common name.

noisytoys · 12/11/2012 20:53

My name is spelt IE but is more commonly spelt with a Y. Both are acceptable but the Y spelling is not my name. YANBU

TiggyD · 12/11/2012 20:53

Not at her age fluffygal. We didn't have Gemmas in the 70s.

TalkinPeace2 · 12/11/2012 20:58

YANBU
My name is comparatively uncommon and has two standard spellings.
I ignored anybody who used the wrong one.

DDs name is unusual. Its regularly mis pronounced - but she corrects people in such a way that they only do it once.

BrianAndHisBalls · 12/11/2012 21:00

My dd's name is spelt with a y at the end and it drives me mad when people spell it with an ie as that it's incorrect! Not just incorrect for my dd but incorrect in general arghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

katiecubs · 12/11/2012 21:01

Yanbu but in all seriousness why do people choose unusual spellings of popular names?!

It sounds the same it's just annoying for the person with the name and those around them. What's the point?!

fosterdream · 12/11/2012 21:02

I'm in my mid twenties and people just can't say my name its welsh spelled completely different from the 'English' version and it drives me nuts! I didn't mind so much when I was younger but I think I'm going to snap at the next person who says it wrong.

I needed to go to the drop in clinic a few weeks ago and was called back to the desk and they asked me if I'd spelt my name correctly! "I'm so sorry I mustn't know how to spell my fucking name"

YADNBU

wigglesrock · 12/11/2012 21:03

My dds name is Sophia but not spelt that way Grin The school wouldn't bother me so much - someone has just done something quickly and not realised.

But your Mum - I think its off that she doesn't care that she has bought a gift with her grandaughters name spelt wrongly on it. Its not her name if its not the right spelling.
