Sick of the bashing

Where shall I start..... I am sick to death of everyone taking the piss out of 50 Shades books, okay so it's not the best written book in the world but the amount of people who start threads about how they think it's shit is really getting on my nerves. Lets be honest the only reason you people start threads like that is because you know everyone will jump on the bandwagon like a fucking sheep and that makes you feel powerful.

Get a grip....just get a grip.

But it is crap. And badly written.

People are entitled to have an opinion.

porcamiseria · 16/09/2012 22:37

I have not read the book, or the threads

however I think the reason its getting so slated is becuse the semi abusive tones upset some ppl?

I think thats why its slated

LRDtheFeministDragon · 16/09/2012 22:38

I am going to say this badly because I'm knackered, and possibly picking up on the overreaction.

But I'm not comfortable with the 'thick' comments. The book may or may not be crap in literary terms (I think it is, so what?). But it's definitely misogynistic and that matters a lot more. So-called 'thick' women do not have less right to know about abusive relationships than anyone else and I don't like the implication that if someone reads Shades and doesn't pick up on the fact it's an abusive relationship, it's ok to call them thick (as if we shouldn't be worried about 'thick' women not understanding abuse).

Shakey1500 · 16/09/2012 22:38

Why do you care so much about people thinking you have bad taste?? My mum thinks I look dreadful in bandanas, says I have dreadful taste in headwear. I don't care whether she thinks that or not. I like wearing them, and that's all that matters.

scottishmummy · 16/09/2012 22:39

do you always so vehemently over react when disagreed with
Christ alive it's a dodgy wank book
expect it o get slated.for good reason

gossipgirl1 · 16/09/2012 22:40

Its because i'm versatile and open minded. I'll admit Ana Stelle is a bit annoying with her oh my's and her lip biting but once you get past that its fine, maybe the reason why I enjoyed it is becasue I was thinking about Ian Somerhalder as Christian the whole time ( who is maybe playing him in movie btw)

Btw, Marian Keyes has a new book out, if anyone wants reminders. I've not read it yet but her stuff is ace and the (brief) bits of sex are genius.

seeker · 16/09/2012 22:45

But, LRD, how could you read it and not notice that it's an abusive relationship? The depressing thing is that people do realize that it is and fantasise aboutnhow wonderful the abuser is.

seeker · 16/09/2012 22:45

A new Marian Keyes! fantastic!

QuintessentialShadows · 16/09/2012 22:47

seeker, but sometimes people in abusive relationships don't properly 'notice' it's abusive. That's what's so scary, isn't it?

And if that book were so obviously about an abusive relationship that every person who read it agreed that it was, it wouldn't be an issue, and it wouldn't be popular.

(It's Helen Walsh's story! Yay!)

scottishmummy · 16/09/2012 22:49

you're all over the shop with metaphors
sheep jumping in bandwagons
loving the thought of it

I think you need to look at why you care so much about how people react to the world's shittest book.

I read it thinking it was deliberately shit. I could not comprehend how somebody could write that badly and be sincere it her efforts.

I think I wrote something similar when I was a 14 year old virgin who had read a few risqué chapters of her Mother's Mills and Boon collection.

PS Christian Grey is not a dark, brooding hero. He's a prick. An abusive prick.

PPS I made it through the 3 books (skimmed but still). It doesn't get better. Not even a little bit.

SuePurblybilt · 16/09/2012 22:52

Oh my. I prefer not to have to 'get past' the shit bits when I read but that's just me

Astounded that squoosh's earlier bishop bashing post went un-applauded Grin. Very good.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 16/09/2012 22:55

Grin Oh yes. Very nice, squoosh.

MinnieBar · 16/09/2012 22:56

I worry that young women in particular could stay in an abusive relationship because they'll compare their situation to the book and tell themselves 'but he can't help it, he loves me really.'

scottishmummy · 16/09/2012 22:58

thats a presumption too far
a wank book will hardly legitimize abuse
unlikely it will compel woman to stay in rl.power dynamics will do that.not a book

gossipgirl1 · 16/09/2012 23:00

Okay... in the first one at the end he did get a bit rough she had a safe word that she could use, did she use it NO. Yes was controlling at first but he has a different reationship with her than the others by the second book he mellowed out. The only "abuse" written in these books are spanking an whipping with belts thats a bit different to being smacked across the face or getting beat up by your partner. When you find out the reasons why he's like that it's heartbreaking by the third book they are married with a family and he's a different person

CleoSmackYa · 16/09/2012 23:00

My abusive Dad was joking about how his wife enjoys this book and how he's loving it what every daughter wants to hear I asked if it was because he can hit her now and she won't complain. He just smiled.

scottishmummy · 16/09/2012 23:02

you're launching a heartfelt defense of 50shades of shite
astonishing
and the ahhh they have a baby and family. bizarre

Come on OP, surely you are a multimillionaire with your book sales by now and according shouldn't care whether others thought your supposedly erotic fiction was pulitzer winning material. Don't worry, MN wont harm your sales too much ;)
