Quite possibly I am, but it seems like every time I hang my washing out then 5 min later neighbour is having a fag in her garden. Our gardens are only about 5 metres wide so my clean washing ends of smelling of cigarette smoke. So does my house if windows open.

I appreciate she doesn't want her own house smelling and that's why she's in the garden but AIBU in thinking this is anti social behaviour??

People do smoke outside, it's annoying for non-smokers, but it doesn't mean they are being anti social.

CakeMeIAmYours · 03/09/2012 18:35

YABU, smoking is legal in this country, and she is perfectly entitled to smoke either in her house or in the garden.

I can understand that it is annoying for you, but that's life I'm afraid.

Only solution is to live somewhere in the middle of nowhere with no neighbours really.

DesperatelySeekingPomBears · 03/09/2012 18:36

Yes, YABU. It's annoying but she can have a fag in her garden if she wants. If the smell bothers you, you could always use a tumble dryer/indoor airer. Not having a go OP, but it is still legal to smoke outside so, no, she's not doing anything wrong.

PureMorning · 03/09/2012 18:36

Its not illegal to smoke...

ElectricSoftParade · 03/09/2012 18:38

YABU.

SoleSource · 03/09/2012 18:40

Yabu My washing used to smell of very strong curry.

DaPrincessBride · 03/09/2012 18:41

YABU. But I know where you're coming from.

picnicbasketcase · 03/09/2012 18:42

YABU I'm afraid. They have as much right to be outside as your washing does.

Mellower · 03/09/2012 18:43

yabu - smokers need to go somewhere, I emphathise about your washing can you change where you hang it?

i smoke in my garden. i worry that the neighbours may not like it but.... shes a childminder and i have to put up with noise/children jumping on fence/looking through fence blah blah blah soooooo im not too worried (plus garden is fairly long so im not right up to their fence).

you probably annoy your neighbour.

cheesesarnie · 03/09/2012 18:45

plus ........ she pays the same rent as us so has no more or less right to the air in the garden.

Pozzled · 03/09/2012 18:46

YABU. I hate smoking as well, but she's entitled to smoke in her own garden!

LucieMay · 03/09/2012 18:48

Put up a big fence? I'm a smoker but I don't drive a car and live on a busy road and have to put up up with neighbours' car fumes/noise/parked blocking the pavements. AIBU to want people not to drive cars near because I don't drive?

moodymary · 03/09/2012 18:49

I really empathise as I used to have exactly the same problem and, living in a terraced house, there was no escaping the smell of cigarette smoke. However, your neighbour has every right to smoke in her garden.
It is irritating though if you are a non smoker.......

InkyBinky · 03/09/2012 18:49

I can't stand the smell of smoke but I don't think there is much you can do about this. It's not unreasonable of the nieghbour to smoke in his own garden.
So YABU, sorry.

Househunter · 03/09/2012 18:49

It's not illegal to smoke outside but it's not very thoughtful of her either. Am sure smokers must be aware of the impact of their stench on others. Would feel exactly the same as you, op.

SwedishEdith · 03/09/2012 18:50

There was thread on here once about someone hating the smell of washing drying outside. Maybe that was your neighbour? Grin

cakeismysaviour · 03/09/2012 18:50

I would be annoyed about it, because I despise the smell of cigarette smoke.

However, they are in their own garden so they are entitled to smoke there, even though it is annoying re your washing ending up smelling like their horrid smoke.

Smoking is quite an anti-social habit in that respect. Smokers have the right to smoke, but non-smokers have the right not to have to breath in/smell of the smoke.

There is no solution to that problem though - as other posters have already said, smoking is not illegal.

BoneyBackJefferson · 03/09/2012 18:51

a long time ago presmoking ban it would annoy myself and my mates that in the winter we would have to sit outside in the cold to get away from the smokers. If we were lucky the pub/club would have external heaters.
In the summer all the smokers went outside and we went inside, at some point I can guarantee that a smoker would come in a light up.

We had several friends start smoking so that they could be inside went it was cold and outside when it was warm, meaning that the rest of us were forced to go in to smokey areas if we wanted to keep the group together.

Now smokers smoke outside all year round, many have gotten used to it and smoke outside of their own homes.

We wanted a smoking ban in enclosed spaces this is what happens.

YABU.

I had a neighbour who did the same - the smell of smoke coupled with the piles of dog poo in the graden meant I couldn't have any of the back windows open without my house stinking. I am so glad they moved!

TigerStripe · 03/09/2012 18:52

I hate smoking, but yabu I'm afraid. Of course she should be able to have a fag in her own garden if she want to.

MrsKeithRichards · 03/09/2012 18:54

Is she smoking a twenty deck at once?
