Quite possibly I am, but it seems like every time I hang my washing out then 5 min later neighbour is having a fag in her garden. Our gardens are only about 5 metres wide so my clean washing ends of smelling of cigarette smoke. So does my house if windows open.

I appreciate she doesn't want her own house smelling and that's why she's in the garden but AIBU in thinking this is anti social behaviour??

YANBU call your local PCSO have them slap an ASBO on her

livingfortoday · 03/09/2012 22:07

Omfg, it can't be making your washing smell in the open air, leave it out and it will freshen up in the wide open fresh air again

WorraLiberty · 03/09/2012 22:12

Worra - I think its unfair to say that its all in the OP's head. I am sure that a grown woman can tell if her own laundry smells of smoke!

I'd like to think so but the mind is a very powerful thing.

Think about it, the breeze blows in all different directions and the smoke produced from a cigarette is tiny in comparison to cars/buses/bbq's/bonfires etc.

Even if the puffed 40 a day in the garden, the chances of the smoke actually going near her washing every time...let alone enough to make it actually smell are just miniscule beyond belief.

But if you expect to smell something your brain can often make you actually smell it.

EnglishGirlApproximately · 03/09/2012 22:12

spuddy I'm with you. Before the smoking ban it was much easier to avoid smoky places. Now every single public building has people smoking by the door so you have to walk through it. Not blaming the smokers, they have.no choice.

I was in hospital for 3 days after having ds and I couldn't open the window because of smokers sat on the benched outside. I can't believe that having a hospital entrance and car park full of smokers is better than having designated smoking rooms.

cakeismysaviour · 03/09/2012 22:12

jiving - I have tried leaving my washing out after somebody has smoked in next door's garden. It doesn't work, the smell is still there.

Now I take it down and stick it back in the machine for a quick wash (25 mins), which is a much quicker way of getting rid of the smell.

cakeismysaviour · 03/09/2012 22:14

Worra - I can't speak for the OP, but my washing does smell if somebody has a cigarette in the garden next door. It just does.

Often I am not expecting to smell it because I don't see the person smoke, so that argument is not valid in my case at all.

WorraLiberty · 03/09/2012 22:20

And to think the Police actually employ dogs to sniff things out....they really should bung a few MNetters a couple of quid instead Grin

I used to post on another forum years ago and I shit you not...some woman actually claimed that she left negative feedback for an ebay seller because the Xbox disc she bought for her son, smelled of cigarette smoke and apparently it triggered an asthma attack? Hmm

A fucking Xbox disc???

cakeismysaviour · 03/09/2012 22:26

Well if was kept in a enclosed room that somebody smoked in heavily, than it probably did smell of smoke.

However, re the asthma attack, I am no expert on asthma so maybe someone who is can give a more informed opinion, but that sounds like bollocks to me.

Liketochat1 · 03/09/2012 22:33

I can well understand your annoyance op. I can't stand smoke myself and this would really annoy me. But I think she's probably entitled to smoke in her garden and there's not a lot you can do about it. Except buy some febreeze!

Knobbers · 03/09/2012 23:07

I smoke outside in my garden.

My neighbours cat shits in my garden.

I think that's worse!

TyrannoWearsGoldKnickers · 03/09/2012 23:10

I smoke outside in my garden.

I pay my mortgage.

End of.

Spuddybean · 03/09/2012 23:11

liketo your use of 'probably' made me laugh :) i think she is probably definitely entitled to.

Yellowtip · 03/09/2012 23:11

Totally unreasonable. And I don't smoke.

diaimchlo · 03/09/2012 23:51

JumpingThroughMoreHoops- well said! people do not realise the amount that smokers add to the governments coffers, including the NHS so anti-smoking brigade lighten up.

YABU and as has been said before I am amazed that you can smell smoke on your washing after it has been out for a decent amount of time, the fresh air would clear any odour.

MammaTJisWearingGold · 03/09/2012 23:56

You are lucky to be able to hang washing out in your garden without your neighbours stealing it for fun! Smoking is the least of my worries and I use my tumble dryer all year round.

Markingthehours · 04/09/2012 01:10

OP - if your neighbour farts in her garden does your washing smell of it?

Genuine question Smile

GreatGretzky · 04/09/2012 03:29

Grin Marking

Of course YABU
