about neighbours smoking in the garden.

Quite possibly I am, but it seems like every time I hang my washing out then 5 min later neighbour is having a fag in her garden. Our gardens are only about 5 metres wide so my clean washing ends of smelling of cigarette smoke. So does my house if windows open.

I appreciate she doesn't want her own house smelling and that's why she's in the garden but AIBU in thinking this is anti social behaviour??

I cannot abide smoking at all, but you ABU I'm afraid, people have to smoke somewhere and they are perfectly entitled to smoke in their own garden.

cakeismysaviour · 03/09/2012 18:59

MrsKeithRichards - It only takes one cigarette to make the garden stink.

I think a lot of smokers think that if they only smoke one and its a breezy day, the smell doesn't linger - wrong! I think smokers become a bit immune to the smell though.

However, as I said already, the neighbour is entitled to smoke in her garden.

Lastofthepodpeople · 03/09/2012 19:05

YABU. She's got the right to smoke in her garden. That said, my neighbors smoke in theirs which is right by DSs window and (small London terraces) his room often stinks of smoke. I think its disgusting and hate having to breath in someone else's smelly smoke when I'm in my own garden. Unfortunately, its just one if those things you have to put up with.

onebigwish · 03/09/2012 19:10

You just have to live and let live here, I'm afraid.

Surely it doesn't matter if she smokes 5 mins or 2 hours after you put your washing out though? It takes a few hours for washing to dry. Your OP sounds a bit like you think she's doing in on purpose, which I doubt.

As an aside, I don't smoke but my neighbour does. My windows are open and I can smell she's outside now. I quite like the smell! Yes, I'm probably weird.

CremeEggThief · 03/09/2012 19:16

YABU.

FiveOrangeFlowers · 03/09/2012 19:16

My neighbour smokes in her garden, right by my back door.

I stand and inhale deeply

3monkeys3 · 03/09/2012 19:17

I hate the whole smokers' rights thing - they have the right to slowly kill themselves whilst bothering others with their disgusting, stinking habit. But, as it stands, she does indeed have the right to smoke in her garden and make your washing smell. Ridiculous.

Spuddybean · 03/09/2012 19:18

I actually think the smoking ban got it the wrong way round and that people should only be able to smoke in enclosed spaces. I hate walking behind someone or being at the bus stop while someone blows smoke all over me (and i'm an occasional smoker too). Where i live being outside in public just means you are going to get smoked near - i preferred it when outside was 'fresh' and people confined their fumes. But i understand i am in the minority.

So yes YABU.

My neighbours play flamenco guitar all day (when it's sunny) in their garden and it drives me mad! But IABU too :)

Mellower · 03/09/2012 19:26

I smoke, I detest the smell and constantly carry halls soothers to remove the smell from me. I need to quit.

honeytea · 03/09/2012 19:38

We had the same problem with the windows, our neighbours smoke on their balcony and they make sure they close all their windows before lighting up but we don't know when they ate going to smoke so we get a house full of smoke.

We have asked them to nock on our door and tell us when they are going to smoke. So far it has worked well. If they had continued to smoke I would have put rotten fish on our balcony as we never use it and we'd have to have the windows shut at all times incase they were smoking.

YANBU

I agree spuddy, my house always smells of others stale smoke, from neighburs on both sides - what can one do in hot weather.

its so regular as well....

It just makes me mad to think they dont want smoke in thier own house - so we have to have thier smoke?

Its so invasive, you cant do much to stop it - thats the problem.

I have thought if I had the money I would love to install an industrial style wind blower fan and put it on every time they smoke - or drop stink bombs every time they smoke.

GetOrfAKAMrsUsainBolt · 03/09/2012 19:44

I remember a very long thread years ago from a woman who was OUTRAGED (no exaggeration) that her neighbour hung laundry smelling of Lenor and her nostrils were being polluted by the nasty, chavvy, chemical smell.

It was a great thread. Grin

OP yes it may be annoying but she is doing nothing wrong at all. It is her garden.

I like cheesesarnie's rants.

JennerOSity · 03/09/2012 19:47

Can't stand smoking At. All.

My neighbours smoke drifts into my house and I go round closing all the windows. But, I say nothing as they aren't aiming their smoke at me and aren't doing anything wrong.

Would love it if they quit though! Grin

So you aren't alone, but nothing you can do about it other than not dry your laundry outside. :(

Feminine · 03/09/2012 19:50

Must be so annoying to have your washing stink.

I don't think you can do anything about it though :(

Can you move your washing line?

TheOriginalSteamingNit · 03/09/2012 19:55

YABU, it's her garden and she is allowed to smoke in it.

elizaregina · 03/09/2012 20:02

true but by the same token we can all do things legally in our garden that we actually wouldnt inflict on people on a regular basis - who would like a bonfire every single day or have audible music every single day ....

CouthyMowWearingOrange · 03/09/2012 20:04

It could also be a part of their Tenancy Agreement if they are renting from a Housing Association or a Private LL.

Spuddybean · 03/09/2012 20:06

Eliza - virtually everyone on my street has audible music or children screaming in their gardens all day. I hate it. But IABU. 2 doors along have had screeching children out there almost every day of the hols, i am on Mat leave wanting to get rest and it has meant on the nice days i haven't sat in my garden and had to close my windows, as the noise is awful. I would rather fag smoke tbh. But i live in a terraced house so have to live with it.

CouthyMowWearingOrange · 03/09/2012 20:10

What I mean is, as an Ex-Smoker, one of the clauses in my Tenancy Agreement is that you must not smoke in enclosed areas of the property. So you can smoke in the garden, but not indoors.

I have seen quite a few Tenancies in my area, with 3 different HA's, and a Private LL, that had this clause in their Tenancy Agreement.

In which case, if I had smoked inside then, I would have been in breach of my tenancy and could have lost my home.

That's also a consideration.

honeytea · 03/09/2012 20:14

The difference is that noisy kids and load music are not dangerous whereas cigarette smoke is.

Spuddybean · 03/09/2012 20:20

is the smell of it on your laundry dangerous? how much passive smoke is bad? if it's outside and 5 metres away? i have no idea tbh.

EllenParsons · 03/09/2012 20:20

I would be really annoyed by this as well, but I have to say YABU as they are entitled to smoke in their garden. I would resent it though definitely!

Iwillorderthefood · 03/09/2012 20:21

Can you all speak to my neighbour who complains when my children are making noise in our garden. She says that they should play quietly at all times. We are in a small London terrace, and she hates them making noise inside as well. The result is that I do not feel able to allow my children to play as they should.

PorkyandBess · 03/09/2012 20:22

YABU, unfortunately.

But I bloody hate smokers so this would annoy me. A lot.

honeytea · 03/09/2012 20:25

If you can smell the smoke its dangerous, I researched it and sent copies round to the smoking neighbours made dp take the research round to the neighbours he told them every time they smoked without telling us they were harming our baby.
