Spiders - only come in the house because the house is dirty????

perceptionreality · 22/08/2012 02:27

My kind dp informs me my house is the only house in the UK where spiders come in. He has never seen it before so, er the house must be dirty!

Nice, eh? Anyway - all I know is they seem to start coming in around August and stop around end of October. I think that if you up the hoovering it reduces how many come in (from experience) but surely they don't all just head for dirty houses?

Your Dp is talking a load of bollocks. And obviously goes around with his eyes shut if he's got to the age he is without ever seeing a spider indoors.Hmm

Spiders hang out where they're likely to get food - for some spiders, that's flies etc., for others, it's other spiders/crawling things.

I never evict house spiders from the house - they do a fine job of killing the flying insects that still manage to get in, despite best efforts to keep them out. I still hoover/dust off their webs though!

Having said that, I do now live in Australia so some spiders have to be removed/killed because they have the potential to be dangerous - but mostly I just let them get on with it.

Go Thumbwitch!!! Grin

Thumbwitch · 22/08/2012 02:59

'ello Solo - you're up late as usual - orright? :)

AdoraBell · 22/08/2012 03:23

Absolute bollocks, they come inside because it's dry and either warmer or cooler than the great outdoors, depending on the time of year. If he is that concerned hand him the cleaning materials and walk around behind him making sure he cleans every inch in the house properly.

TapirBackRider · 22/08/2012 04:02

What a load o'shite! It's that time of year when the creepy feckers are out looking for their one true love...and are appearing everywhere.

Dirty house indeed!

onemoreforgoodmeasure · 22/08/2012 04:47

In addition to the above wisdom, I've also woken to a spider that's come in over night through the open kitchen window and spun a web across the sparkling clean room in the mistaken notion that he'd catch the mother load of flies. It's just that time of year.

ErikNorseman · 22/08/2012 05:00

Has he just moved here from some spider free land? (where???) it's spider season some houses mine have more than others if they are near fields etc but spiders like the shelter of houses and are on the prowl for mates at this time of year.

JumpingThroughMoreHoops · 22/08/2012 07:01

If you want to get rid of them, put a bowl of conkers in the corner of every room.

squeakytoy · 22/08/2012 07:02

the conkers theory does not work, unless you have a very accurate aim when throwing one at the spider! Grin

lovebunny · 22/08/2012 07:24

spiders come in regardless. i suppose very thorough housewives would soon find them and get rid of them, whereas i forget to look up then find there are webs along the ceilings...

ratspeaker · 22/08/2012 07:25

What a weird thing for him to say
He's not got much knowledge of natural history has he.

They're called house spiders for a reason

Does he live with you?

is he normally as critical of your housekeeping? Does he undermine you in other ways?

Leave the spiders

Dawndonna · 22/08/2012 07:27

He's an idiot. Spids come in regardless of cleanliness. I'm rural, it's harvest time, they've disturbed all the spiders in the fields so the buggers have come indoors. It's what happens.
In towns and cities it's weather and food dependent. At the moment there are loads of flies about so they'll be inside looking for them.

MrsPnut · 22/08/2012 07:29

We live in a very old house and have spiders all year round, mostly we just leave them alone.

gamerwidow · 22/08/2012 07:31

We hardly ever get spiders and my house is filthy lived in

YouBrokeMySmoulder · 22/08/2012 07:33

I had a great big one run at me yesterday when I was going through the understairs cupboard for the camping gear. I really tried not to shriek in the front of the dc but I think I failed.

IKilledIgglePiggle · 22/08/2012 07:37

I live on a farm, they have just harvested the rapeseed in the field that surrounds our cottage........you should see the size of the spiders I have been finding in my house, they are huge and everywhere, not to mention the mice, moles, rats, pheasant, and little black insects that stick to your skin.........and I can assure you that my house is clean.

amberjane · 22/08/2012 08:25

gasps ran at you.....faints in terror.
Awake at 3am last night on sofa again with lights on and yes it is that time of year, did someone say dethlac takes a few hours to erm yes kill when aimed at them?

ILiveInAPineapple · 22/08/2012 08:31

We live on the edge of a very small town, I have a clean house verging on OCD according to my DH and I have some bloody HUGE spiders this year, including one hiding in my (clean!) pants that I was pulling up yesterday morning!!!

Mrsjay · 22/08/2012 08:31

spiders come in the house during those months to look for mates they are apparently randy males , tell your husband to clean his obviously filthy house if he is so bothered , he is being an idiot .

babesdontlie · 22/08/2012 08:34

I was told they like dry houses!
I cant stand the ones that run at you, they freak me out!! I'm hoping hunter kitten will get them all this year.

I heard about the conkers thing so last year put a pile of the outside the front door, back door and patio door - the dogs chewed up and chased the ones outside the back door and the squirrels chewed up and took the middles out of all the others!

Might take a walk later to get some conkers to keep inside!

ErikNorseman · 22/08/2012 08:35

Amberjane you can't spray dethlac directly at them, you spray surfaces then after they get in contact with it they die within a couple of hours.

Mrsjay · 22/08/2012 08:35

I have never had to run from a spider do they actually run at you Grin I am usually chasing them the buggers are so big ATM im scared the will carry me off to their lair

limitedperiodonly · 22/08/2012 08:38

I know someone else who believes this. I'd love to give you a full list of his other stupid and offensively prejudiced beliefs but it would out me.

toomuchmonthatendofthemoney · 22/08/2012 08:39

Tell your DP to naff off. Idiot. It's known as "spider season" for a reason.

Scruffybear · 22/08/2012 08:41

Yikes. Some of you are ever so brave. I won't even go in the under stairs cupboard at this time of year!!
I spent yesterday evening spraying 'spider stopper' round the doors and windows. It won't work I know, but it helps me to feel I'm trying to keep them out cause I am still such a wuss. perception reality it so isn't just your house, but my DH once said a similar thing to me before he realised that being the phobic I am, I have paid a bit more attention over the years and if hoovering hourly kept them out, I would probably do it!!!!
