Spiders - only come in the house because the house is dirty????

perceptionreality · 22/08/2012 02:27

My kind dp informs me my house is the only house in the UK where spiders come in. He has never seen it before so, er the house must be dirty!

Nice, eh? Anyway - all I know is they seem to start coming in around August and stop around end of October. I think that if you up the hoovering it reduces how many come in (from experience) but surely they don't all just head for dirty houses?

I have to spider hunt my daughters go hysterical about them DD2 woke me up one night MUUUUUUUM there is a HUGE spider by my bed, ok Ill get it the thing was this size .

I have no idea where their fear comes from as im not scared or shriek they say its the legs they cant cope with, Its daft daddy long legs im getting stupid things just flutter about all weak and wilted,

wasabipeanut · 22/08/2012 08:46

My Mum (the original domestic goddess) told me that you should consider it a compliment if spiders come in as they like warm, dry conditions. If you have them you have a lovely, well aired home!

changeforthebetter · 22/08/2012 08:49

There's a spider season??!! Shock

Well, if he truly believes that hand him the mop and bucket - but he is talking grade A bolleaux.

BetterOnACamel · 22/08/2012 08:50

Aww, that's a nice one wasabipeanut.
My DH is on the opposite end of this one - he positively encourages spider activity. The dog sees them as snack food on legs though Hmm
I like to think the house is fairly clean, but whereas I hoover up the older cobwebs, I try not to disturb any active ones I see. All the summer insects that come in through the open windows (it's too hot to keep them shut!) are quickly snapped up. Hmm, we may be a weirder than most, I'm now thinking...

Thumbwitch · 22/08/2012 08:56

DO NOT CLICK ON THIS LINK IF YOU ARE ARACHNOPHOBIC

These ones are spider-hunters - no web, they just go round and chase other spiders. They move fast but will more likely run away from you than towards you and they aren't in the UK. :)

MoreBeta · 22/08/2012 09:02

Absolute nonsense. House spiders are specially adapted to live in the very dry atmosphere in houses. They die if put outside.

House spiders were originally outdoor spiders but became house spiders probably during Roman times and and mainly get into houses as eggs on furniture, boxes and other items transported between houses.

I live in an old house and some of the spiders there are probably descended from spiders eggs brought into the house well over a century ago.

Mrsjay · 22/08/2012 09:04

JESUS CHRIST thumbwitch wtaf is that monster

not int he Uk you said phew I didnt think i was scared of spiders till now Grin

MoreBeta · 22/08/2012 09:04

In other words, spiders do not come into your house - they are there all the time. The full grown ones only come out and start running about and becoming more active during mating season. Which is why you see them more.

GragPop · 22/08/2012 09:12

Leave the bastard!

Thumbwitch · 22/08/2012 09:21

Mrsjay, that is a huntsman spider. :)
When we get them inside, I leave them alone - so long as they stay up near the ceiling I'm happy for them to just do their thing - they leave when they've eaten the rest of the spiders, or whatever it is they do. I don't mind spiders but I really don't want to mess around with ones that big.

AmberLeaf · 22/08/2012 09:24

Not seen that many house spiders as yet but due to windows being open a lot because of the heat lately we have had shitloads of those gingery garden spiders inside the house!

There are loads of them in every room so I hoover the buggers up.

I also have to chop down their webs on my way out as they are setting traps for me across my porch and garden path. If I'm not going out till mid morning my kindly postman does it for me! by walking through the webs first

There is a spray for fleas mainly but it also deals with spiders that you can get from pet shops made by Dr Johnsons I think. You spray it around skirting boards and corners etc then go out so it doesn't choke you. It deffo makes a difference.

I saw a couple in my garden when I moved some pots from my alleyway that were sooooo big I honestly thought they were mice. Or on rollerskates!

AmberLeaf · 22/08/2012 09:26

Jesus Christ Thumbwitch! How can you even be in the same postal code as that monster?!

I know why I could never live in Australia!

Mrsjay · 22/08/2012 09:41

Mrsjay, that is a huntsman spider

Oh is it now i know I could never emigrate to australia or even visit my daughters would be in curled up balls rocking ,

WilsonFrickett · 22/08/2012 09:43

Oh my Christ, spiders in your pants!

Thumbwitch · 22/08/2012 09:46

Wilson, are you thinking of Honeydragon? Wink

festivalwidow · 22/08/2012 09:50

Pah! We refer to them as 'the lodgers'. I think it's more to do with open windows than anything else.
Mind you, I quite like spiders and DD is fascinated by them; when I do remove them they're 'going to the shops to get their breakfast', apparently.

wasabipeanut · 22/08/2012 10:14

I don't mind them. I'll Hoover cobwebs when I'm hoovering anyway but I wouldn't go out of my way to get rid. I was up at about 5 this morning for breast feeding related reasons and saw a real beauty scuttle across the kitchen floor!

I see it as a food chain thing. The spiders eat insects I don't much fancy having in the house and ours cats like to snack on the spiders. 'Tis the circle of life!

fortifiedwithtea · 22/08/2012 10:16

I like spiders generally but we moved into our house 8 years ago and found it infested with those small bodied, very long spindly legged sort. They go up the hoover. All other spiders get picked up by me and put outside.

WilsonFrickett · 22/08/2012 11:25

Pineapple at 8:31 Thumb

I don't think I want to know the Honeydragon story ta. Spiders in my fanjo is not my idea of a laff. Smile

Ithinkitsjustme · 22/08/2012 11:29

My only pet is a tarantula Grin, but that's a different story. As for the OP, while I think that spiders are to be seen in every house regardless of how clean it is, was it actually the spiders he was commenting on or the months old cobwebs hanging off the ceiling Grin?

perceptionreality · 22/08/2012 12:36

lol no justme - I hoover cobwebs (and spiders!) I am very phobic - it's silly. I thought house spiders don't spin webs anyway? AFAIK they can bite which is perhaps why we don't like them?

Thanks for the explanations re: house spiders. I did find that last year when I put down conkers I suddenly saw loads and then they disappeared and people said I had flushed them out!

dp has some odd ideas generally including that the main food source in chicken is fibre Hmm.

knackered m'dear! how's you?

My Dd (5yo) is fine with spiders, but gets hysterical about flies no matter how tiny!

Thumbwitch · 22/08/2012 15:20

Ah but tiny flies could be mozzies (bastards) - I sympathise with your DD. Had to kill 2 of the bastards this evening already, and move to another seat after spraying the sofa cos one was trying to go up my flippin' nose!! Shock

God I hate mozzies, which is why I'm happy to keep the spiders around.

TheBigJessie · 22/08/2012 15:39

er...

Is he being manipulative, or is he genuinely that ignorant?
