Spiders - only come in the house because the house is dirty????

perceptionreality · 22/08/2012 02:27

My kind dp informs me my house is the only house in the UK where spiders come in. He has never seen it before so, er the house must be dirty!

Nice, eh? Anyway - all I know is they seem to start coming in around August and stop around end of October. I think that if you up the hoovering it reduces how many come in (from experience) but surely they don't all just head for dirty houses?

Actually, I think I'm being unkind. Probably out of indignation!

Tell him he should've gone to Specsavers!

bogeyface · 22/08/2012 15:56

Oh dear! I think a spider crawled in his ear and ate his brain!
Fibre?! :o

FutTheShuckUp · 22/08/2012 15:58

This thread is making me feel a bit uneasy Hmm

peeriebear · 22/08/2012 16:03

House spiders don't die if you put them outside, they just find somewhere dry and move in there instead. Rabbit hutch, old stack of bricks, anywhere. I have some monsters currently shacked up in the ivy on my fence that'd make your hair curl. My garden is riddled with 'house' spiders (Tegenaria).
OP- my mum's house is a bloody shrine, she cleans every day and it's spotless, she gets huge spiders in. They just like coming in!

perceptionreality · 22/08/2012 16:12

why uneasy? Yes we have loads of ivy outside too. I know the house isn't dirty. When he's in a bad mood he can be quite unreasonable. He takes it out on me by saying stuff like this!

No, what they do is come back in. I keep finding a particular seven-legged one in the bathroom. It's been put out three times now.

perceptionreality · 22/08/2012 16:20

It is true - they do come back in, usually to the same spot as well! (perhaps they arranged to meet a friend)

I just bought some Spiderex from Amazon, the reviews were pretty good. I have TERRIBLE arachnophobia and this time of year I just can't relax at home. A spider was in the bath the other night; I spun out, was shaking and carrying on like a lunatic. It's ridiculous I know, but it's my fear is very real. I am literally TERRIFIED of spiders Sad

JustTheRightAmountOfWrong · 22/08/2012 16:35

Sorry derailed the thread there Blush but I just wanted to tell my fellow phobics about my new eight legged freak weapon.

mathanxiety · 22/08/2012 16:40

Spiders come in everywhere at the end of summer. Fwiw, a lot prefer a dry environment.

You need to do something about this nasty habit of his where he takes it out on you when he is in a bad mood. Have you considered counselling? I suggest some for you first and then joint if you feel up to it. What he is doing to you is emotional abuse. Take a look at this book if it is bothering you.

ouryve · 22/08/2012 16:40

Mine's filthy, then.

perceptionreality · 22/08/2012 16:41

Does it work?? I have to get some of that. I'm quite similar to you JustTheRight! I frighten the kids, poor things.

ouryve · 22/08/2012 16:41

And if your DP thinks the house is too dirty for him, show him where the hoover and cleaning cupboard are and tell him to feel free.

NeverKnowinglyUnderstood · 22/08/2012 16:41

since we have had our 2 new(ish) kittens the spiders seem to have gone Grin
and our house is certainly not cleaner since they have arrived.

I do hear them crunching in the corner of the sitting room some time each day so I guess that is where they have gone.. Thankfully the kittens still see the bluebottle as a brilliant choice of prey so the flying things are dealt with as well

HeadfirstOverTheHighJump · 22/08/2012 16:43

Ooh, my mil has the cleanest house I've EVER seen, she's a touch ocd! It didn't stop a massive spider from crawling under her duvet for a nap though! She found it as she was getting into bed Shock

MissRee · 22/08/2012 16:50

I was waiting for someone to post that Thumbwitch Grin

ErikNorseman · 22/08/2012 16:55

Justtherightamount your quiche awaits you HERE
tips, tricks, emotional support and hand holding abound! And if you haven't bought dethlac yet, buy it! I have had 3 live spiders and 3 dead ones so far but I've ordered a second can to be more thorough. As far as I'm concerned that's 3 fewer spiders alive in my house, and who knows how many have crawled off to die under the furniture Evil Grin

Longdistance · 22/08/2012 16:58

Your dp is a fool.

I was in the belief that spiders like houses that are quiet, and friendly :)

MarigoldsInTheWindow · 22/08/2012 17:01

Do Spiders have sex?

goldierocks · 22/08/2012 17:07

Sorry to people that don't like spiders - my son adores them so we have two pet tarantulas.

My nieces used to be terrified of spiders, now thanks to getting used to the tarantulas they are not bothered by them at all.

Strangely enough, since we've had them other spiders seem to give our house a miss now......!

WilsonFrickett · 22/08/2012 17:14
Solo · 22/08/2012 23:13

Grin @Wilson

TW I'm very phobic about actual flies! I can't stand them buzzing around ~ especially when there's food about. BBQ's are ruined for me if I spot a fly on or near the food. Mozzies?! my second hate! Spiders? they are quite welcome in my house :)

Thumbwitch · 22/08/2012 23:20

Solo - you want to get one of these - they're fab! I got one for DH a couple of Christmases ago as his stocking present, and it did sterling service before it gave up the ghost (too violent bashings, I think) so we've just had to get a new one. It's good exercise too Grin

We have filthy yellow-bottomed flies here - they buzz all around your head and fly at warp speed around the place but when they land on the windows... BANG!

flyingspaghettimonster · 22/08/2012 23:48

Total bollocks. My house is filthy, and I have seen barely any spiders or other bugs here at all - I put it down to being in a 2nd floor condominium. My in laws live a few blocks away in a sterile house, and have cockroaches, spiders the works. They live near the swamp.

bogeyface · 22/08/2012 23:50

Those fly swatters are great as you dont have to squish them, aslong as it touches them then they get zapped and trapped and then the fun starts, as you can fry them :o
