I've been on longer train journeys natch. No one plans for them.
Us flying STILL really seen as chic ? Do people believe those stupid articles about changing into cashmere track suits apply for an easy jet to Malaga ?

Plus don't get me started on capsule wardrobes.

How on earth does anyone pack only 20kgs worth of clothes for 1or 2 weeks holiday?

eurochick · 14/08/2012 17:27

I'm about to try to fit 3 weeks' worth of work and casual clothes into 20kg. I'll let you know how that goes.

MarysBeard · 14/08/2012 17:29

How on earth does anyone pack only 20kgs worth of clothes for 1or 2 weeks holiday?

I pack for 1 week and wear everything twice, apart from knickers. Summer holidays peasy, skiing trips not so easy.

I have had mine and both DD's clothes and shoes in a case for a week's holiday and it only came to 16kgs.

MarysBeard · 14/08/2012 17:30

And most of the weight is toiletries.

AnnaRack · 14/08/2012 17:30

Yummymummy you forgot matches to light your travel candle! Would they even get through security? And a travel iron to iron your linen trousers, which will look like an old dishcloth after being stuffed in your bag.
I'm boggling at that huge list - do you have your own private jet or something? Confused

forevergreek · 14/08/2012 17:32

We easily fit 2 child and one adult in 20kgs. Only ever pack for a week and get washed for additional. Otherwise you might as well pack house if going for several weeks

MarysBeard · 14/08/2012 17:32

Also I do plan what to wear to travel in, but only to make sure I don't pack it!

When I went on all girls holidays with friends when we were 18/19/20 we had a lot of discussion about what we were wearing to the airport :)

sadie3 · 14/08/2012 17:32

What ???? You are joking, right?

Yummymummyyobe1 · 14/08/2012 17:36

AnnaRack if you dampen linen trousers and hang tham in the bathroom the heat/steam of a bath will pull the wrinkles out. I buy a box of matches when we arrive although many hotels have them in the lobby.

MarysBeard · 14/08/2012 17:40

For a week's sunny holiday I would wear 1 pair of comfy sandals/flip flops to the airport, and take two further pairs of shoes - 1 pair of more dressy shoes/sandals and 1 pair of trainers. Further to that say, running kit, nightie, 10 pairs of pants, 2 bras, 2 pairs of trousers, a couple of skirts, 3 dresses, couple of pairs of shorts, 4 t-shirts/tops, 4 vest tops, two bikinis.

MarysBeard · 14/08/2012 17:41

Oh and a towel for the pool.

AnnaRack · 14/08/2012 17:43

Aaah, that old glossy magazine chestnut, the hang-your-trousers-in the-bathroom-and the-creases-will-drop-out-as-if-by-magic tip. I wondered how long it would be before someone rolled that one out? Except it DOESN'T WORK. If it worked I would do all my ironing this way.

Peeenut · 14/08/2012 17:44

I had to google travel candles. Hmmm!

Shouldn't giggle I've just packed citronella candles. We'll be spending lots of time outdoors in the evening and they were left over from a camping trip.

MarysBeard · 14/08/2012 17:44

I only do trousers that don't crease easily. Linen mix is better.

AlaskaNebraska · 14/08/2012 17:44

That steam thing is Bollocks. It doesn't work.

icecold · 14/08/2012 17:56

travel candles are for people who dont like the smell of abroad???

really????

I find smells really evocative, and a massive part of travelling

But then, I dont get the Chanel No5 joke

I imagine our values are very different yummymummy

AnnaRack · 14/08/2012 18:00

Travel candles to mask smell of abroad - I've heard it all now.

Yummymummyyobe1 · 14/08/2012 18:26

icecold It is spelt Chanel and the people asked for Channel as in the English Channel. I'm not sure about the values thing, as I think being hard working and family centred are important.

Yummymummyyobe1 · 14/08/2012 18:27

The steam thing works if things aren't too creased.

icecold · 14/08/2012 18:34

yeah, i wasnt really bothered about you clarifying the joke for me, cheers yummy

forevergreek · 14/08/2012 19:27

If it was me you were asking if joking. Nope.

Seriously I dont wear 20kg of clothes
I take about 8 dresses. Add leggings if cold, few cardigans if cold. Plus if cold wear coat etc on plane. If summer 8 dresses, flip flops, wear sandals, underwear etc. will get hotel to clean/ use washing machine depending on where we are

Little boys, same, around 8 t shirts, shorts and underwear.

Bag with shampoo/ suncream blah blah

Never comes to 20kg

( I actually moved abroad for 18months and only took one case at 23kg and what was on my back- alone though)

"How on earth does anyone pack only 20kgs worth of clothes for 1or 2 weeks holiday?"

What on earth do you pack to go over, or do you have heavy suitcases? In order to cut costs we are only taking 15kg each for a week this year and I'm sure we will manage perfectly well.

Jenstar21 · 14/08/2012 23:11

I have a backpack which I take when travelling. I find it almost impossible to get it to more than 19/20kgs. I never take more than a week's worth of stuff, and wash as I go along. I managed like this when travelling round the world for 8 months. That covered me for warmer and cooler weather. It's easy enough, but you get a bit fed up with wearing the same things all the time!
