To laugh at people planning outfits for I've hour flights

I've been on longer train journeys natch. No one plans for them.
Us flying STILL really seen as chic ? Do people believe those stupid articles about changing into cashmere track suits apply for an easy jet to Malaga ?

Plus don't get me started on capsule wardrobes.

Is your name Craig? This is the sort of thing my other half gets irrationally angry about.

He's also mentioned donkey sanctuaries.

kickassangel · 14/08/2012 02:53

The one time I flew business across the Atlantic I noticed that the seasoned travelers wore something like black leggings/yoga pants, black t-shirt, and then had a very good 'finishing piece' type jacket, which they got the flight attendants to hang up. The next morning they just put on the jacket and went from pyjamas to debonaire in one go.

I mainly do longer flights so wear yoga pants type stuff and take a pashmina. Can't bear the nylon 'blanket' you get on the plane.

sashh · 14/08/2012 04:57

What the flippin eck is a capsule wardrobe?

Something that was thankfully left in the 1980s for most of us. Alomg with oversized T shirts.

There used to be magazine 'pieces' about how to go away for 3 weeks with just hand luggage. It would give great advice such as wear the oversized T shirt with jeans to travel, sleep in the T shirt, put a belt with the T shirt the following day to make a minidress.

MonaLotte · 14/08/2012 07:48

I hate these bitchy sneering threads. Who cares what other people do? What difference does it make to you OP? Does it make you feel better about your own life?

MrsHoarder · 14/08/2012 08:12

I plan what to wear on the plane. It usually has to go with walking boots (as these are too big/heavy to pack) but also has to be comfy whilst I'm being sick with the seatbelt light on. Plus a pashmire of course.

I disagree with the "no one plans for train journeys" claim as well. I always have either a pashmire or big shawl when doing a train journey of over an hour, as well as planning my footwear to be both comfy and suitable at both ends.

MadeleineAlright · 14/08/2012 09:11

lol at Sash

and how you CAN wear your swimming costume to the bar at night with a sarong as a skirt while everyone laughs at you and not look like a nut job.

lol at mona coming on the thread to say its crap.
I read loads of shit threads - ones where grown women group wank off over spot squeezing or go into a fit of the vapours over spiders - i just hide them

can i recommend that as an option?

OP posts:
LynetteScavo · 14/08/2012 09:39

I'm with Craig on the donkey sanctuaries.

MonaLotte · 14/08/2012 10:27

lol at Madeleine for confirming my opinion about her! :)

WoodlandHills · 14/08/2012 10:34

Ha ha, agree OP, it always makes me laugh when I read in crappy womens mags, about how too look "airport chic" etc, as someone else said, as if the press are waiting for you at the other end Hmm

ridiculous

ScrambledSmegs · 14/08/2012 10:42

I'm a last-minute panic packer, so my hand luggage is always a bit hit and miss. You know those women at the airport who are the antithesis of put-together travelling chic? The ones with real bed hair that's flat on one side and mussed up on the other, make-up they did on the train in the dark and looks it, and items of clothing inside out? Plus hand luggage that they threw everything they could find in, but still have nothing they actually need in it? That's me, that is.

I'm off on a long-haul flight in a couple of weeks. I'm 6 months pregnant and my body temperature fluctuates between Siberian winter and Death Valley at midsummer. Also, DD's nursery is on holiday now so that's made everything 50 times more difficult as she loves to 'help' Mummy pack Hmm. I think I need a holiday packing consultant. Can you even get them?

MinesaBottle · 14/08/2012 11:46

The only thing I definitely don't wear on longer flights is jeans; I did once on a flight to New York and I felt so uncomfortable and smelly by the time I got there. I generally wear leggings, T-shirt dress and either ballet slippers or biker boots. I don't really care what other passengers think as I just want to be comfy, especially when flying to NZ to visit DH's family - that's a brutal flight!

ginnybag · 14/08/2012 11:50

I love packing for holidays - it's one of my favourite bits - and, yes, I plan what I'm going to travel in.... for what it does, not how it looks. Comfy trousers, flat, light shoes, t-shirt, cardi, pashmina (sorry!), all preferably cotton, and definitely nothing synthetic - it sticks.

I carry a change of t-shirt, underwear and meds, face wipes and lipsyl. The makeup goes in the case, as does the perfume and any other sort of spray.

My least favourite fellow travelers are the giant-hand-luggage carriers and the bloody spritzers. Sod off spraying your scented crap around! It's a closed environment and I react to chemical scents by getting splitting migraines, so unless you want the Bride of Dracula sat next to you/behind you etc, upchucking every two minutes and causing the cabin crew fits when I lose all the feeling and use of the right hand side of my body, keep your sprays to yourselves!

Bunbaker · 14/08/2012 12:06

Those of you who change before touchdown, are you the ones taking ages in the toilet while there is a long queue forming outside?

I always make sure DD goes to the loo before we descend because she has an annoying habit of wanting to go when it is inappropriate. I would be pretty annoyed if someone had spent ages tarting themselves up instead of using the toilet for its intended purpose.

I just wear clothes that are suitable for flying in and for the destination. I can't imagine trying to get changed in the confines of an aeroplane toilet. But then we always fly cattle class.

YummyMummy are you for real? How do you get all those lotions and potions through passport control or do you stock up in the airport shops?

Kayano · 14/08/2012 12:07

I don't see why the need to get annoyed. I live planning my suitcase, I love lists, I love ring organised

I can't clean my house out of rota (today is wash/ iron day when DH cooks and does the hoovering for example)

People spend far too much time up in arms about what other people are doing.

custardismyhamster · 14/08/2012 12:18

I tend to travel in either linen pants or jeans, with a vest top and a cardigan (thin) I NEVER pack change of clothes in hand luggage or anything.

And then-this year, I flew to Italy. on a work trip. When work hadn't paid me and were meant to have (paid me two weeks late in the end)

I missed my connecting flight in Paris because I had 40 minutes and the ground staff sent me the wrong way through the airport. The check in crew changed me to the next flight (2 hours later) which I was thrilled about as it gave me time for a toilet stop, a drink and some food-I would've chosen to go on the later flight if they'd given me the option.

I landed in Italy-and they told me that, oops, they didn't put my luggage onto the second plane after all, it's still in Paris. Said it'll be in Italy in two days (five day trip!)

Well, I was not impressed! I didn't know anyone else on the trip-luckily, the other girls rallied round and leant me shampoo, shower gel, straighteners etc so I could at least get clean. Airline gave me an emergency overnight kit with toothbrush, razor, t-shirt (too small for me though) I had to find a shop and buy a vest top so I could put on a clean top after my shower. No hope finding a bra in my size and very limited funds anyway. The next day, after we'd finished work for the day, everyone else went in the hotel pool. I sat on a sun lounger with my jeans rolled up, melting, wishing I was in the pool.

From now on, I will ALWAYS pack a change of underwear (or maybe two!) plus something to swim in, a toothbrush and mini toothpaste, clean top, shorts and mini shampoo, conditioner, shower gel and deodrant in my hand luggage. And a comb and some hair bobbles.

The relief when my luggage arrived-my god!

Mayisout · 14/08/2012 12:22

I dress smartish in the hope of being upgraded. It hasn't happened yet but you never know.

MainlyMaynie · 14/08/2012 12:26

My favourite thing about this thread is yummymummy's list of what she always takes for DS1 (inc. orange juice), followed by a post saying that her DS is 16 weeks and has never flown. Give it a few flights and you'll be down to a spare vest for him and a relaxed attitude to feeding him the free drinks...

JustTheRightAmountOfWrong · 14/08/2012 12:28

I fly a lot. Long haul I always take a soft comfy tracksuit, thick socks, cashmere wrap (can't beat a bit of cashmere for comfort) and travel size cleansers and moisturisers for face and body. I manage to fit all of this into my handbag (a large Mulberry, in case anyone is remotely interested) so I don?t take up more than an average person's amount of room, either.

I always get changed in the loo before the flight takes off and it takes all of 2 minutes. There is nothing unhygienic about it; that is what soap and water is for. However, a couple of weeks ago flying back from NYC I changed into my tracksuit in my seat with a blanket over me, there was no one next to me so I didn't offend anyone's sensitivities!

I like to look as rested as possible by the time I land.

Short haul I always have my wrap with me; flights can get extremely cold at altitude.

forevergreek · 14/08/2012 13:08

That is a lot of hand luggage!
Myself and x2 under 3 have one bag we travel with, and one suitcase checked in. Half empty half the time, what do you pack and how do you have enough hands for baby/ toddler and loads a hand luggage!

Also can't see a suitcase on a plane v practical as u have to get up and down to find stuff, a small shoulder bag or rucksack under seat better.

Have change of clothes for all three due to spillages/ sick but ne'er happened yet. But small, so leggings and thin long top for me if needed, and thin merino tracksuits for little ones ( fold tiny and light), all three fit in a small side pocket of bag. Spare pants and few nappies for baby.
Snacks/ carton of milk . That's it...

We fly v often and it does bemuse me each time people board. If some catastrophe happens and you are stuck unless you are travelling to Timbuktu most thing can be brought.

I wouldn't travel in jeans but rarely wear anyway. I actually like the idea of capsule wardrobe. Means everything goes with everything and less to pack

Yummy mummy- we are off in a few days for 6 weeks abroad, will take two suitcases between 4 of us. That will include nappies/ travel cots/ clothes/ toys.. We do have a washing machine so will prob pack around a weeks clothes each max

Yummymummyyobe1 · 14/08/2012 13:11

PessimisticMissPiggy it is the only way to travel I like to ensure I have covered my basis.

eurochick it's not my hand luggage it is an additional bag for all the bits you need when you land eg Passport, transfers etc

TooImmatureTurtleDoves don't be [envious] i work primarni as well designer (there is no point spending a few hundred pounds on some things)

waterlego a Tote is a bag that usually doesn't fasten at the top (people use them more often than not a a beach bag) The word Tote means "to Carry".

icecold travel candles are must for arrival.

Pandemoniaa my actual luggage isn't massive as the toiletries are travel size and clothes fold up small.

Yummymummyyobe1 · 14/08/2012 13:20

Bunbaker As long as they are under 100ml, unopened and in a clear zip bag then they are okay.

Mayisout it very rarely works, you also have to be traveling alone with nice luggage.

MainlyMaynie It might actually get worse now that I'm aware that DS is allowed his own luggage as long as he has a ticket for a seat. Need baby hand luggage - perhaps a large tote.

forevergreek I would rather pack additional clothes for DS than buy things when I get somewhere as I they might not sell things we like.

MadeleineAlright · 14/08/2012 13:21

lol at tote is " to carry"
hahaha

thanks for that darlin'

MadeleineAlright you are more than welcome. Smile

ScrambledSmegs · 14/08/2012 13:29

Do you think it's possible to be downgraded if you look too trampy at check-in?! That's my worst fear.

Disclaimer: I may be over-egging the slummy mummy thing a touch. After all, I've never turned up at the airport without my passport and tickets, like someone I know!

Yummymummy bless you, I know I'm somewhat scatty but do you think you may be taking everything a little bit too far the other way? If lists help you feel in control that's great, but remember that planning too much and getting obsessed with little details isn't great for anxiety etc. There's a definite danger of taking it too far!
