I've been on longer train journeys natch. No one plans for them.
Us flying STILL really seen as chic ? Do people believe those stupid articles about changing into cashmere track suits apply for an easy jet to Malaga ?

Plus don't get me started on capsule wardrobes.

I used to struggle to keep it under 20kg, in my pre-DS and pre-reader days. But that's because I had to pack a book for each day if going to a non-English speaking country. Books are heavy!

Just packing clothes and putting my ereader in my handluggage otoh leaves me nowhere near the weight limit.

Backpacking for 3 months = 14kg. My rule of thumb is if you can't carry your bag unassisted for a reasonable distance, you have brought too much stuff.

I also think it's to do with the size of the bag you own. If you own a massive suitcase you'll fill it, whereas if you go through adult life with a backpack as your holiday luggage, you'll only ever take about 18kg max.

For a holiday in a hot place DH and I can get everything we need into one carry-on bag - we don't pay for luggage if we can avoid it.

For skiing we get everything we need into one hold bag.

When DCs were younger and came with us we took one hold bag for four people for a fortnight.

I am abroad atm and have with me 10 pairs of knicks, one bra, 3 swimming costumes, three loose tops, one t-shirt, one pair of shorts, pair converse, pair flip flops, one dress, one pair loose trousers for the plane (cold and very early when we left, cold and very late when we get back). That's it apart from small wash bag. All items are cotton and light and take up very little space. I will go to several social events here including a posh birthday party on Saturday (that's why I brought the dress - wouldn't have bothered otherwise).

Don't get the need for the other stuff - and I have travelled with babies. I don't do travel candles but I have brought incense sticks against the mozzies (citronella makes me feel sick).

quodlibet, that is so true! I never pack more than 18kg for 2 boys and myself in total in my old backpacker's bagpack.
