I think it's an unwelcome normalisation of an offensive term. Don't like it at all.

Middle class/middle england: "all working class people are Chav. Glad we don't live near them"
Middle class/leftie "that's not nice. I wish everyone got on. We can't all work in tv. I would like a nice Chav friend "
Average Working class: "my kid goes to school with kids whose parents never work, never read, stand at school gates (if kid is lucky) drinking, swearing, smoking etc. I hate them/it."
