Chav

I think it's an unwelcome normalisation of an offensive term. Don't like it at all.

So it's ok for other people to buy that game then? Just to reinforce the negative stereotype,

usualsuspect · 13/08/2012 14:32

Because that game is not just based on how someone dresses.

Socknickingpixie · 13/08/2012 14:32

do you seriously seriously think that lots of people concider those jobs as goth/emo? would you actually call a person who happened to have one of those jobs a goth/emo solely based on that in the same way that anybody in a low income job would get called a chav?

brilliant i just found out that my best friend in the whole world is a goth or emo this may confuse her because she often gets called a chav.
shes none of those things shes just a person a rather lovely one at that

Empusa · 13/08/2012 14:32

That game just looks like cheap crap, wouldn't have thought they'd sell many.

Empusa · 13/08/2012 14:33

"in the same way that anybody in a low income job would get called a chav"

I don't know anyone IRL who calls someone a chav based on their job. Especially not based on it being low income.

TheQueenOfDiamonds · 13/08/2012 14:36

Usual - I don't think i've said anything about the game actually?

Sock - I wouldn't, but i know lots of people that would yes, because in general people that work in them identify with the sort of fashion etc that the places promote... And some of those jobs are low income.. so what are you on about?

Denise34 · 13/08/2012 14:37

Neither do I. The only people who seem to think that people who work in "crap jobs" get called chavs are people who have never had "crap jobs" and do not come into contact with chavs.

Socknickingpixie · 13/08/2012 14:39

pick up a national newspaper then or go read any housing benefit bashing thread, go to any area bordering on social housing and listen to how people talk about 'that' area. its rife

usualsuspect · 13/08/2012 14:40

QOD, I understand you think its a style of dress etc, but obviously lots of people don't which is why there is a crap game called 'chavs' which some people on this thread think is perfectly ok.

So it's not just about how someone dresses is it?

CrispyCod · 13/08/2012 14:45

Aren't CHAVS just people with shocking tastes whether working or not. To me a CHAV is someone who follows fashion to the nth degree regardless of whether or not the item suits them. A CHAV can be rich or poor.

usualsuspect · 13/08/2012 14:47

That game is not about rich 'chavs' though, thats why its so wrong to me.

Anyway I've banged on enough on this thread Grin

Socknickingpixie · 13/08/2012 14:48

i work in a enviroment that means i come into a great deal of contact with loads of different people including other people who are proffessionals the way some of my clients are treated just because they are broke is shocking.

i recently had a social worker say to me " there chavs what do they expect" used to talk about a woman who has no criminal record has never been in the legal system the sole reason for calling her a chav was a job that is percived to be suitible for a drongo (also a word ive heard other proffessionals using) and living on a estate.

i hear it all the time, perhaps thats why i have strong feelings against it

Denise34 · 13/08/2012 14:51

Drongo? Are you Australian? I think Alf Stewart is the only person I've heard use that word before.

MaisyMooCow · 13/08/2012 14:57

Perhaps we could also have a game called 'Wankers'

This fun WANKERS board game satirises modern stereotypes. As BANKERS the aim is to become king of the world by trading your way around the board avoiding tax and the Inland Revenue. Collect your ''bonus'' each week by ripping off the common people and live life to the max

Socknickingpixie · 13/08/2012 14:58

no denise, and seriously i heard someone use that word within the last week.
i had to ask what it ment the first time i heard it.

Denise34 · 13/08/2012 14:58

We already have that game, it's called Monopoly.

theodorakis · 13/08/2012 16:18

What's a drongo?

theodorakis · 13/08/2012 16:21

I called some people morons the other day, because they were moronic. Is that also offensive? I am genuinely interested to know if people think that's offensive, not stirring for fun.

NPPF · 13/08/2012 16:48

"drongo" is a dim wit, theo

When I was young "chav"type people were called "scallies" Nobody seemed outraged about that word.

Kayano · 13/08/2012 16:50

They were Charvas in Newcastle lol

NPPF · 13/08/2012 16:54

Maybe "scally" is a Liverpool term.

Empusa · 13/08/2012 18:45

It was townies round my way, instead of chavs. I think we should bring the old names back.
