Chav

I think it's an unwelcome normalisation of an offensive term. Don't like it at all.

Am I on your shit list yet?

bureni · 12/08/2012 20:06

NFC, I agree with you in regard to the tories, their legacy will be with us for at least another generation, they have done untold damage to the working class of the U.K during their term in office under the rich mans friend Thatcher & Co. Shameful.

GingerWrath · 12/08/2012 20:07

Marianne I agree! And no I won't, there is an underclass of people in this country who maybe used to be working class but now no longer have the same values as they used to. There are a multitude of reasons including previous governments.

Now they have lost the work ethics and moral ethics do they still deserve to be called working class?

Denise34 · 12/08/2012 20:09

Thatcher has been out of power for 21 years now. There comes a time where you can't blame her for people's failings anymore. Today's "chavs" are largely the product of the Labour parties time in power 1997-2010.

EatingSwansHorror · 12/08/2012 20:13

Because Denise, I work every single day with people you use that disgusting word about - young people who have been stigmatised by people like you into thinking that there is no hope for them. And I see just how much potential they have and just how possible a great future could be for them. And then they come up against people like you who like to put people in a box because it makes them feel safe and gives them something to whine about and it makes me want to weep.
That's why I am glad that I don't live near you.

bureni · 12/08/2012 20:17

Thatcher may well be out of power for 21 years but she was soley responsible for closing down a high percentage of all U.K industry and production, she was more keen to make the rich South richer and to hell with the rest of the country and its workers, she should have been locked up like a criminal or put in the looney bin imo

cheekybarsteward · 12/08/2012 20:17

Denise thank you for saying what I am too tired to say.
Funny how we as a family had to rely on donated food and it was under a labour government and yet still Maggie didn't force me to wear dodgy apparel and think the world owes me a living....just saying and a tad bored now.

Alurkatsoftplay · 12/08/2012 20:18

Labour screwed over the working classes more than anyone. they were in power for Twelve years! Twelve years! they were so busy faffing around with their second homes, their second jags and fiddling the schools for their children go to, they nearly bankrupted us. All they ever did for the working class was create a system of dependency and hand outs.

If Chav is a product of the politicians, then the blame lies firmly with new labour.

Denise34 · 12/08/2012 20:18

The only young people who I call chavs are the ones who act like chavs. Decent, hard-working young people are not chavs, no matter what their background is.

GhostShip · 12/08/2012 20:19

A lot of my old mates are chavs. They don't work, smoke weed and drink cider all day, hang around outside shops, listen to shitty 'Wigan pier' music, have sex outside with anyone, and have babies with all sorts.
Vicky Pollard is a good comparison.

That's a chav to me. Its nothing to do with being working class at all.

And I like how people who haven't lived it think they're doing people a favour by blaming Labour or the Tories. It's just a lifestyle choice. I was a bit like that but thought Christ I'm better than this and grew the hell up.

cheekybarsteward · 12/08/2012 20:21

Well done ghost, also my experience

Alurkatsoftplay · 12/08/2012 20:21

The game is shit and offensive tho. I agree.

EatingSwansHorror · 12/08/2012 20:22

Every post you make makes me more and more pleased I live nowhere near you.

I have no political issue with you.

I have an issue with the words you use and your lack of understanding about the damage you cause, on this thread and on others.

Alurkatsoftplay · 12/08/2012 20:23

But ghost ship, how do you know I haven't lived it? I'm in Chav heartlands, me.
It's interesting to look at the politics that are enabling it. Those are new labours.

GingerWrath · 12/08/2012 20:24

Ghost, that was what I was getting at, Chav is not a nice word, maybe we can come up with a better one but those types have no right to being called working class!

GhostShip · 12/08/2012 20:26

alurk not everyone, I'm just imagining a lot of people sat there saying 'oo let's analyse the poor working class, there has to be deeper meanings for everything they do' like we're some interesting subject of conversation...

GhostShip · 12/08/2012 20:27

ginger in all fairness it's their choice to be a chav, some embrace the term!

To me I'd compare being a chav to being a goth, or an emo or whatever it is. Rather than making it a class thing.

GhostShip · 12/08/2012 20:28

Who's that aimed at eating?

GingerWrath · 12/08/2012 20:29

Hmm, but what about their parents who are equally as feckless?

ravenAK · 12/08/2012 20:30

You can argue about whether 'being a chav' is some sort of lifestyle choice or not I suppose, or whose 'fault' it is that they exist.

I'm with EatingSwansHorror & usualsuspect, but I can concede there is an opposing viewpoint even if I think it's reactionary ignorant bollocks.

But htf can anyone think it's OK to produce & market a game aimed squarely at sneering at any sector of society because the game manufacturers (& presumably their target market) perceive their lives as being, ha ha, a bit shit, how hilarious?

Usually I'm quite 'yes, well, there are ignorant twats out there who won't get why this is offensive, what can you do, it's a free country' but this rather took me aback I have to say.

GnocchiNineDoors · 12/08/2012 20:32

This game has been around for years. It used to be called Chav-opoly.

We bought it for SIL as she collects Monopolys.

ravenAK · 12/08/2012 20:32

(& not really GhostShip - I'm a goth. Very few points of comparison)

OP posts:
NovackNGood · 12/08/2012 20:33

I thought chavs was from the Spanish chavales meaning youths or at least if the chavs had been bright enough a few years ago they would have known that and taken 'possession' of the word but they didn't.

Socknickingpixie · 12/08/2012 20:35

there is so much wrong with this that its shocking. even more so that anybody actually belives if you find the use of the word chav or riddiculing people who are different to you for what ever reason unacceptable then clearly you must be one of these people who its perfectly acceptable to rip the piss out of. what a utter cuntish thing to say.

chav is not a word just used to insult people on benefits who have never worked but if it was that would make it just as bad, actually educate yourself about some of the issues experanced by a huge amount of people often generations living in the areas that tend to get refered to as 'chav slums' learn how it happened why it did befor you feel entitled to rip the piss out of them,
its a word used to describe people you feel are common or not as good as you, making them into a underclass you know those people who may work in retail or other type of minimum wage/low paid job or live on estates or have a different taste in style to you.its taring an entire group of people with a negative insulting brush and taking a pop at people whose circumstances make them more vunrable than you, apsolutly nothing classy at all about doing that and doing so says a huge ammount about you. and no its not that your better its a good indercation that your the scum and with your sneery looking down on others shows your own lack of manors.

fwiw the only estate i have ever lived on has been owned by my family for hundreds of years and has a fucking castle on it.

Denise34 · 12/08/2012 20:40

Socknickingpixie, what are you doing other than sneering and looking down on others you believe to be less than you? It's very easy to feel sorry for chavs when you don't have to live around them.
