for keeping my 7 month DD in baby grows?

MIL and SIL have both said that I shouldn't keep dressing DD in "pyjamas" during the day. MIL has bought her "proper clothes" and pointedly said they are for nursery and SIL took DD upstairs and changed her.

DD is in baby grows for a number of reasons
they are cheap in baby bundles off eBay, her feet stay warm, she sleeps a lot so is comfortable, she's quick to dress/undress,
I don't mind when they get covered in paint etc at nursery etc.

Obviously for smart occasions she has a couple of dresses she wears but I intend to keep her in baby grows till she's about a year old. I said to SIL that when she had children of her own she could dress them in whatever she liked but that DD was my child and that I could dress her however I liked and would continue to dress her in baby grows for as long as I felt like it.

I'm curious to know if I am a bit odd or not. DD is my PFB so I don't know any different.

If DD has sat up and started crawling earlier I would have stopped babygros during the day, but she didn't crawl until 12 months.

BobbieSox · 06/08/2012 17:40

But babygrows are so cute! Both mine wore them during the day until around 6 months, possibly longer. With DS ( still small) I did feel judged when several different people in one day commented on him wearing his 'pyjamas'. Now it's summer he's in T-shirts and trousers though.

OP YANBU

DS has only just gone into proper clothes at 8months. He suffered from extreme vomiting so needed between 10 and 20 changes a day. baby grows are easier to dry and a lot cheaper to keep enough in the house.

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 06/08/2012 17:50

Babygros are clothes for babies.
They are not pjs, they are uni-garments
Nothing much cuter than a lemon babygro and a hand knitted cardi
I also like baby jeans and tee shirts with flat caps Grin

lisianthus · 06/08/2012 18:30

Babygros are great. They are practical, warm and cute. Dd1 wore them until 12 moths and I am doing the same with Dd2. If anyone I see out and about feels judgy, I'll just consider myself to be doing a public service in giving them something to feel excited about.

What MrsDeVere said! Babygrows are clothes for babies. They are practical, cute and it's easy to check/change diapers in them. For me the worst thing for DD when she was a baby was little dresses. I got gifted loads of them by family and they were just really impractical. They rode up to her armpits all the time and she looked really odd lying down in them. Now that she's walking she's in trousers/shorts and tops which works really well.

catgirl2012 · 06/08/2012 19:22

My DS is 8.5 months (He's on the 99.6th percentile for length and weight so he looks like at least a 1 year old)

He is just starting to wear a few outfits but mainly he is in baby grows.

He goes out and about in them. He goes to nursery in them

IMO - they are the most comfortable thing for him to wear. Given he has two naps in the day they are perfect. Would anyone want to go to sleep in jeans? I don't think so.

"Proper clothes" on a baby is a bit wrong to me

notcitrus · 06/08/2012 19:45

I thought dd would spend this summer wearing either little dresses or just vests because of the heat - she's nearly 6 months and ds in his first summer aged 9-12 months spent much of it in just a nappy and t-shirt.

But given the weather, she's been mainly in babygros. Top and trousers is really impractical for a baby who can't sit up as every time you pick them up the top slides up.

They only look like pyjamas to me if they are quite baggy - a babygro that fits, with a funky bib, makes dd look as smart as any baby around. They're babies for such a short time - might as well enjoy baby clothes while you can. I'm aware that ds wore babygros longer than many other babies simply because I was struggling for some of his early months and wanted to actually enjoy him wearing them. And at least I didn't care what others thought!

MadameCupcake · 06/08/2012 20:04

I have a bit of a thing about people not changing their babies out of babygros into clothes if they have just not bothered to get them changed - even newborns. If they have been wearing it all night then they should be in clean clothes for the day time but that doesn't mean not babygros necessarily.

Babygros are fine for small babies as you can get really nice ones that look like clothes really with nice pictures on etc but 8 months does seem a bit old to be wearing babygros all the time.

BUT at the end of the day though it is your baby so no one elses business really so YANBU!

MadameCupcake · 06/08/2012 20:05

sorry 7 months not 8 months!

catgirl2012 · 06/08/2012 20:05

I think an 8 month old seems too young to be wearing outfits

Byecklove · 06/08/2012 20:11

All mine have been in them until about 12 months with the odd outfit here and there. For DS2 it was out of necessity as he had reflux so couldn't tolerate anything round his middle. For the other two, it's just ease/ comfort. I don't think they need to be changed in the morning, they don't yet have the hormones that produce that lovely oily, smelly sweat so after a normal night they still smell fresh as daisies! Change at night is nice as part of a bedtime routine. Just make sure the toes on the sleepsuits are big enough. I know what I'd rather wear, given the choice!

MarysBeard · 06/08/2012 20:11

There is absolutely nothing wrong with it at all, as long as it isn't so hot that a babygrow would overheat her.

It's YOUR choice. Personally I enjoyed dressing DDs up in different clothes. However I always think they are comfiest in a baby gro or clothes that are specifically designed for babies, not just downsized little girl clothes. I wouldn't bother if we weren't going out. DD1 in particular being a summer 2005 baby when it was actually very hot spent the first few months mainly in just a nappy and vest!

Whereas DD2 was born in February snows in 2009 so always had several layers on.

honeytea · 06/08/2012 20:15

YANBU.

Our baby is due in December and we have only bought babygrows for him. MIL has started saying he needs little jeans/shirts there is no cance I am ironing a bloody shirt whilst looking after a newborn we are just going to ignore her.

We have got lots with no feet, but now I am worried that his feet will get cold.

If I had the choice I would wear my pyjamas all day, I want my baby to be as comfy as he can be and I think babygrows are the way to do that.

I don't feel people who dress their babies in little proper outfits are wrong, I just don't want to do that myself.

And don't babies especially around 6 months, just look so adorable in babygrows!

3monkeys3 · 06/08/2012 20:20

DS2 is nearly 1 and he mainly wears footless rompers - my older 2 were in proper clothes from very young, but I have full on last baby syndrome and am trying to keep him a baby for as long as possible Grin. I agree they are comfy, practical and cute - YANBU!

mumblecrumble · 06/08/2012 20:22

Our DD wore baby grows in the day.... with dresses voer. Cos they were comfy, easy to wash and easy to change her in etc.

A few people commented

I really didn;t care.

She was a baby!!!!!! Was being kept warm and snuggly and looked so cute

Hate babies in 'adult' clothes' like denin skirts, jeans shirt etc - but I would never ever comment on what someone else dressed their kid in.

Kayano · 06/08/2012 20:23

Hmm 'adult clothes'

Errr... Clothes

WondaMumma · 06/08/2012 21:55

I kept mine in baby grows until he was about 6months, he had a couple of pairs of tracksuit bottoms and a few t-shirts but tbh with 4 kids I couldn't be bothered to iron clothes for him!! I think it's so much more comfortable for them too!

FuzzzyDuckosaurus · 06/08/2012 22:54

Why is it always 'jeans' that everyone is referring back to as being so uncomfy? The majority for baby's are very soft and stretchy and you will usually find that they have an elasticated band around the waist so hardly restricting.
And with people saying baby grows are much easier to change if accident etc, so is removing a pair of leggins and a tshirt. You might even find that it's only the top that needs changed as the bottoms escaped the mess. You can't do that with a baby grow can you Wink

Obv, your child so you do what you like, but I just can't imagine my 10 month old dd in a baby grow all day every day. I love dressing her in cute clothes Smile

imonlydancing · 07/08/2012 00:20

My SIL had her DS and DD out of baby grows on day 1. They came home from hosp in jeans and sloganed t shirts/leggings and a mini dress from next. I was asked about once a week why I didn't dress DS up in "pretty little outfits" and my response was that he's a baby not a dolly. The waist band on jeans must be so uncomfy to lie on, like lying on a lumpy mattress!

Noqontrol · 07/08/2012 00:32

Mine were in baby grows for ages. Not all the time but a lot of the time. Maybe up until 11 months or so. Cant see the problem myself, but each to their own. Who cares what others decide to do. Your baby your choice.

Socknickingpixie · 07/08/2012 00:56

ive just realised that i am judgy about something,i would never dress my child in full on outfits that are scaled down adult stuff (obviously im using that word to describe what i mean) i dont see the point in the expense the laundry the ironing or the what i percive to be the dolly attitude.obviously what you choose to do with your child is up to you

all my kids have been in babygros/rompers up to 1 and vests/teeshirts dungies/strippy leggins from 1 to 2 on cold days i add a cardi on hot days its just a vest and nappy all my kids have had quite funky reusables. when they are at an age when crawling/walking is happening i get the babygrows with tread on the feet,if they want to suck toes (their own) its rompers.im also a 50/50 foot cutter offer (half get feet chopped off half get kept intact for future children.

my kids have certainly never been the only ones at nursery dressed like this.i would never look at a baby in a babygro and think nightwear, but i would look at a dressed up baby and think 'christ its a baby not a doll or a fashion statement'. but thats my issue and i would be wrong for doing it.

and if any relative of mine disapeared off upstairs with my baby to dress him/her up i would buy them a dolly for them to play with.

my dc's gp's often get outfits for dc jeans/shirts ect and i just dont use them,i have made it clear that i dont think it is acceptable to treat kids like fashion statements so if they want to waste money its up to them, the convo was prompted by a gp's ebay purchase of a suit (trousers jacket shirt waistcoat bowtie) when dc was 3 months old just to be dressed up in not for a special occasion. i disslike it intensely and i do get to make that choice for my child.

toofattorun · 07/08/2012 07:48

I dressed my first DS in babygrows for the first 7 or 8 months of his life because he looked more comfy in them and because it was cold and they covered his feet. I would always see babies in the most uncomfortable, cheap clothing and feel sorry for them. They looked like they were wearing cardboard. Anyways, I got my family telling me to put him in normal clothes, but to me, they were normal clothes and everyone else was wrong. Don't listen to interfering idiots telling you how to look after your baby.
