for keeping my 7 month DD in baby grows?

MIL and SIL have both said that I shouldn't keep dressing DD in "pyjamas" during the day. MIL has bought her "proper clothes" and pointedly said they are for nursery and SIL took DD upstairs and changed her.

DD is in baby grows for a number of reasons
they are cheap in baby bundles off eBay, her feet stay warm, she sleeps a lot so is comfortable, she's quick to dress/undress,
I don't mind when they get covered in paint etc at nursery etc.

Obviously for smart occasions she has a couple of dresses she wears but I intend to keep her in baby grows till she's about a year old. I said to SIL that when she had children of her own she could dress them in whatever she liked but that DD was my child and that I could dress her however I liked and would continue to dress her in baby grows for as long as I felt like it.

I'm curious to know if I am a bit odd or not. DD is my PFB so I don't know any different.

Up to you but I think a little odd unless you can't afford clothes.

nickelbarapasaurus · 06/08/2012 13:09

DD had some lovely dungarees when she was 0-3 months sized.

nickelbarapasaurus · 06/08/2012 13:11

i am aware i may be changing my story a bit.

i have to confess mine is based on a whim at time of posting and on what clothes we have been given.
had we been given lots of bottoms for this age, she would be wearing them.
for some reason, we've got shedloads of teeshirts, girl tops and dresses, but no bottoms.

DeterminedandSpecialMum · 06/08/2012 13:18

My DD2 is 7mths old and is only in a babygro at night time or unless we having a day indoors - however, will still be put into a clean one in the morning. Other than that will be dressed normally.

PoppyAmex · 06/08/2012 13:18

As I said before, I really don't like to see babies dressed in "outfits", but horses for courses, etc.

Aesthetics aside don't you find if you dress a non-mobile baby (mine is only 5 months) all the tops/dresses/tunics get all bunched up at the back or ride up incessantly?

louisianablue2000 · 06/08/2012 13:24

YANBU but you are being a bit precious. First time I heard of this was pre-children and Jools Oliver said she kept her children in white sleepsuits until they were one. I did roll my eyes. You can do what you want and it's not going to harm your LO at all, and your SIL shouldn't have done what you did but

  1. Do you really think a little jersey dress or T-shirt and leggings is less comfortable than a sleepsuit?
  2. Don't you find sleepsuits a pain in the neck with all the poppers (personally I found dresses the easiest thing when they were tiny, and in the summer, when they were 9 months and crawling it became leggings and T-shirts)?
  3. Didn't you get any clothes as presents, I suspect some people are a bit offended that their gifts have not been used but also doesn't it cost you more to go and buy sleepsuits instead of using clothes you presumably already have in the house?
FeakAndWeeble · 06/08/2012 13:25

This topic has popped up before and I always find it so weird when people say they find baby grows so easy and convenient. I can't bear them! DS has always been a wriggler so faffing about with a bazillion poppers was never fun. He stopped wearing them completely at about six months when I finally found somewhere that sold proper two piece pajamas for babies and if I ever had another (which I won't), I wouldn't put them in one at all.

But hey, everyone's experiences are different and YANBU to do what you're happy and comfortable with.

MaMattoo · 06/08/2012 13:27

I see no problem. Mine lived in baby grows till 1ish. He looked sweet and he had all colours, textures etc.
My child, my rules Grin simples!
Don't now to pressures of any kind - because this is just the start...

M&S and Gap used to do good footless all-in-ones that have little pockets and look more like 'clothes'. My twins wore these until they were about 7 / 8 months old. I used to get lots of 'why are they wearing their pyjamas?' comments so these were good as they stopped the comments and were also really easy.

Ecgwynn · 06/08/2012 13:36

Socks are an arse, tights are probably even more of an arse (DS so no experience here), jeans are an uncomfortable arse, dungarees just get sucked on the front bit, tshirts and tops ride up exposing the poor child's back/arse.
YANBU
If your child was 2ish they might have a point but she's a BABY, so wears a babygro.

lurkedtoolong · 06/08/2012 13:36

Tell your MIL and SIL that you're very fashion conscious and dressing DD in onesies, all the stylish people are wearing them.

EasilyBored · 06/08/2012 13:36

White baby grows are adorable. Until they start rolling round and crawling and you suddenly become aware just how ridiculously dirty your floors are...

5madthings · 06/08/2012 13:37

yanbu, mine all wore babygrows for months, not everyday, they did have some outfits, esp dd asi loved little dresses and leggings on her after 4 boys Grin

but you can get some more daytime babygrows as well that look cute and are practical, so did that, tobytiger do some lovely ones, also dungarees, soft cord ones over a long sleeved vest also very easy and comfortable.

i did a bit of a both, it wouldnt occur to me to judge someone who has a baby in a babygrow, it would make me raise my eyebrows to see a baby ina very uncomfortable looking 'outfit' at only a few weeks old!

numbertaker · 06/08/2012 13:38

YANBU. My younger son stayed in baby grows till 9 months. I dont give a fig. They are cheap, washable, time saving, not faffy.

Badvoc · 06/08/2012 13:41

My children both wore babygros 24/7 til they were about 10 months old...unless it was a special occasion of course!
Ds1 was tiny and they just didn't make "proper" clothes that small back then.
Ds2 was huge but it's a lot easier changing babygros 5 times a day than whole outfits.
But I am hopelessly old fashioned in these matters...I have a thing about tiny babies in denim for example...he can they be comfy? :(
Go for 100% cotton and you won't go far wrong op.

EasilyBored · 06/08/2012 13:43

I've also found that once ds started solid food and it's a but warmer out he often either just in a nappy or in a sleeveless vest. He seems happiest when he's naked.

I've totally given up on socks. Don't even know why they bother making them for babies.

5madthings · 06/08/2012 13:46

yes white babygrows are not good, even for newborns with their explosive poo! i like the bright funky coloured ones you can get :)

easily i have a toby tiger stripey babygrow to send to you actually, its a footless one that ds3 and ds4 wore but is still in good condition, i WILL post it this week! Grin its 6-12mths so that should fit?!

MrsHoolie · 06/08/2012 13:47

Yanbu.
Babygrows must be alot more comfy than jeans etc.

nagynolonger · 06/08/2012 14:00

You decide how to dress your baby not your MIL or SIL.
I don't like the unreasonable MIL bashing threads but you do need to tell yours to mind her own business.

Do people really look at a baby in a babygrow and think the mother can't be bothered to dress it?

In the summer mine often wore a vest and nappy all day......that was when we had summers.

lovebunny · 06/08/2012 14:00

i love babygrows ( i calls 'em "growbags") on babies. i kept my baby in babygrows, sometimes with a cardigan, whenever we were in the house.

the health visitor told me off, saying she should wear proper clothes, so as she got bigger, she did. i think she wore proper clothes all day when she was about twelve months. she's 30yo now and, as far as i know, doesn't wear them any more. though she does love her soft and cosy pyjamas!

i think tiny babies and crawling babies are well-served by a good babygrow. and they are so snuggly in them!

FuzzzyDuckosaurus · 06/08/2012 14:04

I had dd in proper clothes from a few days old! I loved buying little dresses and leggins/tops for her. Yes she also had jeans but they were soft and stretchy so I don't believe they were uncomfy for her.

As someone said up thread, if I seen a 10 month old going about in a baby grow, I'd be under the impression that the parent couldn't be bothered to get then dressed.

Proper clothes don't have to equal 'uncomfy'

TheQueenOfDiamonds · 06/08/2012 14:07

YANBU. I much prefer none-walking babies in babygros/rompers. My pet hate is newborns in denim. It looks so uncomfy!

AlwaysHoldingOnToStars · 06/08/2012 14:10

Yanbu. I kept mine in sleepsuits, or rompers without feet/shorty rompers and dungarees till they were about 1. They look cute and it's easy than trying to find all clean parts of a matching outfit.

DancesWithSockPuppets · 06/08/2012 14:12

Thank god! I'm exactly the same (my DS is actually coming up to 8mo Blush. For me, it's because he seems more comfortable and also because getting clothes on and off him is such a bloody headache.

Recently in shame I've started compromising and throwing either trousers or a jumper on over his babygro when we go out. I'm sure I fool nobody but myself.
