for keeping my 7 month DD in baby grows?

MIL and SIL have both said that I shouldn't keep dressing DD in "pyjamas" during the day. MIL has bought her "proper clothes" and pointedly said they are for nursery and SIL took DD upstairs and changed her.

DD is in baby grows for a number of reasons
they are cheap in baby bundles off eBay, her feet stay warm, she sleeps a lot so is comfortable, she's quick to dress/undress,
I don't mind when they get covered in paint etc at nursery etc.

Obviously for smart occasions she has a couple of dresses she wears but I intend to keep her in baby grows till she's about a year old. I said to SIL that when she had children of her own she could dress them in whatever she liked but that DD was my child and that I could dress her however I liked and would continue to dress her in baby grows for as long as I felt like it.

I'm curious to know if I am a bit odd or not. DD is my PFB so I don't know any different.

What do you do in hot weather?

DD wore all in ones until 5-6 months then as she started crawling etc I switched to play suits (no feet) which you can get in packs of 2-3. She has them with leggings. Or wears dungarees for cooler weather so when she sits up in her pushchair, she only needs a light blanket - babygros aren't that warm!

If they want to buy her clothes, let them! But I find babygros a PITA for nappy changes.

AnaIsAlwaysShocked · 06/08/2012 10:38

I'm the complete opposite, I've always dressed mine.

I think it helps distinguish between night and day for them especially for sleep time. I also think for a sitting/crawling baby sleepsuits are too loose for them. They make crawling difficult for DS in the mornings as they are so slippery. Standing/crusing would be impossible.

Also babies in sleepsuits in the supermarket past a few weeks old, I always assume they are poorly or just recovering.

Unlurked · 06/08/2012 10:38

Yanbu. I kept my dd2 in babygros for as long as possible (which turned out not to be that long as her 2yo sister would unpop all the poppers the second I turned my back) but we had daytime babygros and nighttime babygros. Daytime ones were usually rompers. By 6mo both of mine were crawling so were usually in dungarees because they're a bit harder wearing.

Krumbum · 06/08/2012 10:38

I think babies look so much cuter in babygros! It keeps them looking like little babies for much longer, I'm gonna do it for that reason Grin

MrsBucketxx · 06/08/2012 10:39

i nelive that baby grows should be for night time too.

too many cute day clothes out there too. if you want your dc to be comfy leggings and a t shirt are practically jammies anyway.

iknowwho · 06/08/2012 10:39

Do what you want.
I do think it looks like you can't be arsed making an effort and have kept her in night wear.

Iggly · 06/08/2012 10:40

If money is an issue, you can get packs of cheap long and short sleeve vests, a pack of cheap leggings from sainsburys and socks. Plus a warm cardie. I can't see how a baby would be warm enough in a babygro.

Bunbaker · 06/08/2012 10:43

"I do think it looks like you can't be arsed making an effort and have kept her in night wear"

Blimey! That's a bit judgemental. I also don't think a baby that age can tell that it is night-time just because they have a change of clothes.

pumpkinsweetie · 06/08/2012 10:45

Yanbu-Its your baby, what you dress your baby in is up to you, and you only.
Your sil took YOUR baby upstairs and got her DRESSED because she didn't like the way you dress YOUR baby!!!??Shock
Nip that in the bud, mil & sil sound like they are very controlling.

I kept my dcs in babygrows for 4 weeks then they wore clothes until bedtime but that was my personal choice-you are entitled yours!Smile

I hate seeing newborn babies shoved into uncomfortable denim clothes, but i would never infringe my hate for denim on any of my familys/friends babies as its their CHOICE

BoysBoysBoysAndMe · 06/08/2012 10:45

With ds1 he was in clothes at 3 months

Ds2 was in clothes about 6/7 months, but only if we were going anywhere.

Personally, I just want them to be comfortable and easy to clean at that age. What 3/4 months old wants to wear jeans, dungarees, shirts, etc?

Most days he now wears nice joggers and t shirts so he's comfy. Shirts and jeans if we're going somewhere nice or a special occasion like a birthday tea etc.

Personal choice. Your baby. Out your baby in what you think is best. There is no right or wrong. And ignore what everyone says.

iknowwho · 06/08/2012 10:46

Of course it is judgemental! Most opinions are and we were asked what we thought.
I would go up and say it to anyone off the cuff but the OP was getting different points of view.
That happens to be mine!

MrsMangoBiscuit · 06/08/2012 10:46

We had some really brightly coloured/patterned babygrows for DD for the daytime right up until 6 months. Lots of romper suits / footless babygrows too. She also wore a lot of leggings and t-shirts, which are probably just as comfortable, but easy for nappy changes (no poppers!) and cut down some on the washing as she usually only got muck on one half at a time!

Babygrows on a 1 year old during the day is probably a bit unusual, but so what? If she's comfy and unrestricted, and your both happy then that's the essentials covered. If they kept on pestering, I'd probably be politely pointing out to the ILs that she's a baby, not a doll. Hmm

cherrypieplum · 06/08/2012 10:46

I hate seeing little babies in grown up clothes. I've put my I've week old in dresses a couple of times mostly as we were visiting people who'd given them to us but they are not practical at all.

My DH kept picking up cute little cardies too but has since seen the error of his ways since trying to do a rush nappy change many times!

EasilyBored · 06/08/2012 10:47

I try and keep pjs and sleep suits for night time, just so he will always know that pjs on means it's bedtime. If we're just in the house during the day he mainly wears vest and shorts or jogging bottoms, depending on how hot it is. I have 'nice' clothes for going out in. he's 7 months, I find that he can crawl easier if I leave his knees bare.

UglyBettyIsMyHotterSister · 06/08/2012 10:47

My DS was in babygros until he was almost 1. Comfy, warm and dead cute imo.

I think some people are in such a hurry to make their baby look older. My DF brought her baby home from hospital in skinny jeans, a shirt and a leather jacket. Each to their own and all that, just not my taste.

Stick to your guns, she's your baby OP and she won't be small for long.

IHeartKingThistle · 06/08/2012 10:47

DD was in jeans at 4 weeks. I have no idea why!

DS was in babygros and cardigans until he was about 10 months!

I'm surprised at the reactions you've had - with DS I had lots of people saying how lovely it was that he was so comfy and looked like a baby rather than a mini-adult.

Babygros rock!

GobblersKnob · 06/08/2012 10:47

Personally I hate seeing babies in 'clothes', just why? It is all about the parent. Mine wore gros or rompers or just vests when hot until about one.

You don't need to search out footless ones, just cut the feet off ones you have, also extends the life of any that are tight in the leg but fine in the body.

VolAuVent · 06/08/2012 10:48

YANBU.

There's no point in having lots of little outfits just to please everyone else - they're not for the baby's benefit, are they? If your DD is comfortable and happy in baby grows then that's great :)

As for babies a few weeks/months old being "too old" to wear baby grows during the day, well they're still babies for some time yet.

And why should you have to "make an effort" to dress up your baby like a doll if she's quite happy in baby grows? I can't see why that would be a priority for anyone. It would only be to shut up those who shouldn't be so nosy and judgy anyway. No need to make a baby look like anything other than a baby, is there? And babywear is not a fashion show or a competition!

fishybits · 06/08/2012 10:49

We're in a very wet part of Scotland so heat isn't too much of an issue but she has blanket for her buggy if needed and I'll happily put a cardigan on her too.

DD got the whole night/day thing quickly and her clothing wouldn't change that.

This is really interesting and I do take the point ref easier nappy changes and needing to be able to grip with her feet.

Thank you all, much food for thought Smile

Next do lovely baby gro's. Ds3 will live in these until he's about 6 months ish. Though plain white ones too-I'm not throwing money away Wink

littlemachine · 06/08/2012 10:50

DS is 7 months too, and usually wears clothes, but he does have some 'nicer' baby grows that he wears in the day too. Some of them would be wasted in his cot! Some have little grippers on the feet of larger sizes to help them move about. Quite a few babies of a similar age at playgroup wear baby grows, sometimes with a fancy bib or those little soft leather shoes over to make them look more like an outfit I have noticed.

NoComet · 06/08/2012 10:52

I found once I started weaning toos and leggings worked best.

Buy multi packs or similar colours.
Then food spillage or dribble is change the top, exploding nappy change the bottom (DDs rarely war vests unless it was really cold).

Ensuring DCs have large numbers of mix and match clothes is an absolute godsend if you go away.

The day you decide they are too old for spare clothes is the day they are spectacularly sick in the middle of town.

DesperatelySeekingPomBears · 06/08/2012 10:52

DS is now 7mo. Personally I've dressed him in 'proper clothes' during the day since he was about a month old but I don't see how, at his age, I could have kept him in babygrows during the day for practical reasons.

When he commando crawls in the morning, in the his babygrow, it ends up shuffling down until his feet are trapped in the body part and the legs are trailing loose behind him which upsets and annoys him. He also wouldn't be able to chew/suck on his toes and feet which he loves doing.

Personally, I'd keep babygrows for night time and buy some clothes for during the day. It doesn't have to be anything fancy if you don't want it to be, but certainly as others have suggested, some little leggings and t-shirts etc.

LackingNameChangeInspiration · 06/08/2012 10:53

YANBU

Getting changed into clothes in the morning and into baby gros in the evening was part of how I established a day/night routine so to ME if I saw a baby in babygros during the day I'ld think "jammies" then instantly correct myself by reminding myself that they're not just jammies to everyone. I wasn't judging, they just mean night time in my house.

I know that there are people who don't like to see babies in mini clothes and think it's gross, but meh! I got lots of outfits as gifts, he didn't get invited to that many special events in the early days so if we didn't use them during the day they'ld never have got worn, and no matter how many more I bought I never seemed to have enough babygros for sicky/leaky nights so gros at night/outfits during the day was the best way for us to use all of our baby clothes stock

so do what you want/ whatever is the best way to use what you've got, because yes some people like me do associate gros with jammies and it looks to me for a second like the child hasn't been changed in the morning (till I correct myself), but if you do little outfits like I do other people judge you.. do what you want! its not a huge deal
