To think that Brighton is a hideous dump

Just looking at these pictures:

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2179371/Broken-bottles-plastic-bags-left-strewn-Brighton-seafront.html

Yes I know there's probably a similar amount of rubbish on Bournemouth beach, but at least they've got SAND for fuck's sake.

As far as I can tell the only purpose Brighton serves is to be an easy journey from London on the train. All this bollocks about it being bohemian (i.e. lots of stag dos) is a front for the fact that it's effectively Croydon-on-sea - an expensive London commuter town but with extra vomit and seagull shit.

It's hideous.

It's great too

StunningCunt · 27/07/2012 01:54

I'm sure Brighton has a good line in shops selling crystal pendants and such like, but what on earth possess people to say 'it's hot today, let's go to the beach' to end up in fucking Brighton?

I'm sure they can't all live nearby.

done that plenty of times, and had a great day. shrugs the only 'downside' for me is that I absolutely adore the Sealife centre there, and find it really hard to resist going in. And it is expensive.

Otherwise, Brighton is a fun option. I avoid the pier, unless we go there in the winter. There's lots of beaches to go to, and we do lots of different ones. But each one has something different to offer. I like being able to peel off and do some shopping if I want. If I don't want what Brighton has to offer, then I go to a different beach. It really depends on what mood you're in surely?

Trills · 27/07/2012 02:05

yabu

FreelanceMama · 27/07/2012 02:14

I live in Brighton. YANBU if you're wondering why people travel here for the beach. It's pebbles. Why?? Visitors, please go somewhere else with your rubbish. YABU if you think Brighton is its beach.

We keep talking about leaving to get a bigger place but would miss the South Downs, parks, allotments, cinemas you're encouraged to take babies to, quirky BF-friendly cafes, vintage clothes shops, dressing as the mood fits and knowing you'll never be odd, festivals (chilli, Pride, food, community, fringe, photography, digital arts, grow your own) and the seafront when the Londoners have gone home

bragmatic · 27/07/2012 03:59

I'm with you. It's grim.

bejeezus · 27/07/2012 04:07

I used to live there. I can't stand the place.

Pretentious and over priced

FinnBuckingham · 27/07/2012 04:26

yes I am afraid pretentious is the word, and as for 'quirky' cafes and baby friendly cinemas...hm... well....nice if you have the cash, and one offs, essentially. Absolutely dire out of the lovely 'funky' centre, rampant child abuse, and fulll of unbearable types who have relocated from London to bring up their repulsive offspring who are invariably called jocasta or something.

Sunnydelight · 27/07/2012 04:33

I lived in Brighton from 1991-2004, had three kids there and loved it. It han't become so mega fashionable then and it was a great place to be with small kids - child friendly cafes and bars, good schools, lots of lovely parks. I remember strolling home from the beach at the weekend with DS1 in his pram feeling very lucky as we passed the queue of traffic heading back to London.

I'm now in Sydney, went back last year to visit friends and the first thing I thought was "how filthy this place is". It was grim - overflowing bins, rubbish all over, the smell of urine in any out of the way place etc. We are a half hour drive from Sydney's Northern beaches which are really busy in the Summer when a temperature of 30 isn't a novelty BUT you can't drink on the beach, nobody is stupid enough to bring glass bottles (and the lifeguards would quickly deal with it if anyone did) there are plenty of bins which are emptied regularly, and people take their rubbish home. Even Bondi which regularly attracts thousands, very few local, does not look like a rubbish dump at the end of the day.

needsomesunshine · 27/07/2012 05:10

I made the mistake of going to Brighton off season once. That was the last time I went.

Ozziegirly · 27/07/2012 05:23

I used to love Brighton - it was my closest town growing up (although I was 30 mins away in the countryside). I loved the shops, the bars, clubs, everything (apart from the beach which I understand only loony Londoners visit).

But then I moved to Oz and I"m with Sunnydelight - christ the places over here are well looked after - emptyish beaches, glorious clean sand, warm water and no one with ghetto blasters. Bliss.

RichManPoorManBeggarmanThief · 27/07/2012 06:50

I don't think you can blame Brightonians for the state of the beach- most of that will have been dumped by day trippers from elsewhere-a national disgrace rather than a local one. I was born in Brighton and grew up nearby. I kind of like the place. I even like the pebbly beach- it's lovely to lie on warm stones. I'm a bit "meh" about sand.

I do think it's somewhat overrated. The shopping is pretty dire compared to many other 2nd tier towns- the Churchill Square complex is really low end and they dont have a single decent department store. There are definitely too many crystal/ incense/ skull ring shops. However, I definitely wouldn't say it's hideous. There is some beautiful architecture- the crescents are stunning- some pretty decent restaurants, and the South Downs.

noddyholder · 27/07/2012 06:55

Grin people can't stay away though! Great place to live and if you are still frequenting shops selling crystals you are going to the wrong places! This last week has been buzzing here allmthenbars and restaurants full. But all those who hate it stay away as its full we have no room and we all love it!

noddyholder · 27/07/2012 06:57

Unbearable types bringing up their repulsive offspring. Wow no wonder you don,t like it here.

spotofcheerfulness · 27/07/2012 07:03

It's a much better place to live than to visit.
But I did smile to myself as your description is also spot-on. I am one of those hideous meedya relocated from London to Brighton types. At least we're all in one place so you know where to avoid us...

I agree I don,t think it's set up for tourists at all and is much more community orientated. So many great art shows and events and really friendly and sociable. It does have its scruffy bits but that's how it is and it's only visitors complaining! I love it here in winter when the pavilion andthe lanes are all lit andthe sea is wild.

MrsHelsBels74 · 27/07/2012 07:09

I live in Brighton & love it. But I do avoid the beach when it's hot!

spotofcheerfulness · 27/07/2012 07:10

Yup much nicer in winter. I also avoid the seafront like the plague though.

FinnBuckingham · 27/07/2012 07:12

it's only visitors complaining!
no it's not.
agree about the pavilion all lit up, and the wild sea, it is lovely.
I must say there is little 'friendly and sociable' about Brighton, that is a total myth.
I was horrified by some things I heard of there, horrified, and I am talking child protection issues.

noddyholder · 27/07/2012 07:16

Finn I don,t think this thread is for social commentary it is about the social aspect.

FinnBuckingham · 27/07/2012 07:17

I don,t think this thread is for social commentary it is about the social aspect.
?? wtf?

FinnBuckingham · 27/07/2012 07:20

you are just getting upset cos I am saying something about Brighton that you know is true, and you do not like.
there are only so many times in a year one can sit on the seafront drinking wine congratulating selves.
the rest of the time......hmmmm....
the very best thing about Brighton is the fast train to London.
