To think that Brighton is a hideous dump

Just looking at these pictures:

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2179371/Broken-bottles-plastic-bags-left-strewn-Brighton-seafront.html

Yes I know there's probably a similar amount of rubbish on Bournemouth beach, but at least they've got SAND for fuck's sake.

As far as I can tell the only purpose Brighton serves is to be an easy journey from London on the train. All this bollocks about it being bohemian (i.e. lots of stag dos) is a front for the fact that it's effectively Croydon-on-sea - an expensive London commuter town but with extra vomit and seagull shit.

It's hideous.

'Pretentious, arty farty and a noveau riche wannabe, just because I had the temerity to use the expression 'shooting the breeze'?! Okaaaaay

DialsMavis · 27/07/2012 09:38

There are a couple if crystal shops in the next wanky little west London suburb to mine. But the only epidemic level child abuse that goes on is the fact their parents seem unable to name any of their off spring anything but Hugo.

LentillyFart · 27/07/2012 09:38

Try to curb that overactive imagination of yours finn - I've lived in Brighton for half my life - worked in many different sectors in the city and seen pretty much all there is to see. I have to tell you that the 'tarot and crystal' contingent cause probably the least trouble to the general population! Local obsession? Where are you getting this information from? What exactly are these people up to that you know about but nobody else does?
Answer me those questions and I might be prepared to concede that you are not full of shit but right now you are definitely, unquestionably and without doubt full of shit.

The problem isn't with Brighton, it's with the thousands of people who somehow have forgotten where the nearest litter bins are. (There's a similar problem in my local parks as well) WTH is up with that? People are so.damn.lazy.

It is so infuriating to go to public places and find them covered in empty bottles and McDs, sweets, crisps packets & wrappers.

FinnBuckingham · 27/07/2012 09:43

good, reasoned adult debate, lentillyfart, i just meant that there is a dark side to Brighton, sorry if that's a surprise for you, and that the tarot thing is a symptom of it. I spent many years there too.

FinnBuckingham · 27/07/2012 09:45

my facts are anecdotal so here is not a suitable place to share them.

thebody · 27/07/2012 09:48

Gosh we do tarot cards and ougi board but I can assure you we don't abuse our kids.

No difference to this than kneeling in a church and praying to Jesus or praying 6 times a day to Mohammed!!!

RichManPoorManBeggarmanThief · 27/07/2012 09:48

clam I dont think E Sussex or W Sussex allow dogs on the beach at all between April and October, or at least that used to be the case

LentillyFart · 27/07/2012 09:49

Ah good - so you actually haven't got the faintest idea what you're talking about? Why didn't you just say that to start with? Anecdotal? Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight.

There's a 'dark' side to everywhere if you go looking for it - but my starting point wouldn't be the crystal shops!

FinnBuckingham · 27/07/2012 09:51

Lentilly I spent 10 years on a rough estate on the edge of Brighton, so I think I do know at least a little bit what I am talking about. You don't need to be so defensive. Yes, anecdotal, and therefore mostly confidential.

FutTheShuckUp · 27/07/2012 09:52

'Pretentious, arty farty and a noveau riche wannabe, just because I had the temerity to use the expression 'shooting the breeze'?! Okaaaaay

It was all of it actually

clam · 27/07/2012 09:52

I had no issue with him not being allowed on there. It was a statement of fact; he couldn't go on, so I sat on the promenade instead. And regretted it.

randomimposter · 27/07/2012 09:53

I've lived in Brighton 26 years since coming here as a student. It's changed immeasurably in that time, but I guess lots of places in the UK have. It's a sign of the socio-economic times.

The pictures are disgusting, but largely due to day-trippers having no manners or respect.

All I can say is that I was on this beach at 10.45am yesterday morning (presumably a couple of hours after the pics were taken) and it was totally clean. The beach cleaners do an amazing job.

Yeah this particular beach between the piers is often best to avoid (too much GP dahling), and there are many nicer places to enjoy the Brighton experience.

clam · 27/07/2012 09:55

And for the record, dogs are allowed on some beaches. You need to research which.
But as I said, that wasn't my issue. I was merely stating why I didn't go on the pier with the kids. But am not sure it would have been much better than where I ended up. Noise, dirt and the smell of chip fat.

Ouchdownthere · 27/07/2012 10:03

Pre DS used to love going to Brighton for the day, getting slowly sozzled in a hippy beach front bar and eating chips on the pier before the train home.

DH and I went for weekend when pregnant with DS. Sober, I couldn't get past how dirty and rundown it was, shattered all my lovely warm fondness and I won't be rushing back unless it's to get sozzled on the beach

Where the hell did child protection issues, tarot cards & the dark side of crystal shops come from?

I have some tarot cards upstairs, do you want to call SS & take my son away Hmm

NicolasGirl · 27/07/2012 10:09

Noddy I was at a graduation meal at hotel du vin last week as well.

NicolasGirl · 27/07/2012 10:10

In Brighton obviously!

Goldenbear · 27/07/2012 10:10

Well I for one will be pleased when it returns to the domain of the Arty Farty types, much more bearable than the aggressive, loud lobsters that are scattered around the childrens' paddling pool on the seafront or sea. It has been hellish on the central seafront over the last few days. My DS has wanted to visit the seafront play areas for the water play - these are normally great fun but I will only take him first thing at the moment to avoid the above!

I have lived here for 9 years and it is the friendliest place I have ever lived and I to have lived all over- I was born and brought up in London, then lived in shropshire, Sheffield, Birmingham, Bristol and Worcester. My mum lives in Shropshire and every time I visit her I can't believe how unfriendly a place it is. Every time I've taken my DC to parks in Shrewsbury, Telford know one says anything to you. Even in National Trust parks. It is totally different in Brighton, there is a real sense of community that I've never known before. Parents talk to each other.

Equally, i can't believe how a lot of people talk to their children or threaten to smack where my mum lives and when I visit Relatives in Birmingham, it's all, 'pack it in or I'll.....' My mum has lived in this market town for 18 years and is so bored and lonely that she is moving to Brighton. I visit and stay with my brother in North London and the parks are rubbish in his locality, imnot talking about central London parks. He's just paid 1.5 million for his house and I really can't see why and even he's starting to have doubts as every fucking down there is traffic, the local park is really unattractive, so it's always off to Hampstead Heath for a walk or picnic. It's lovely but that's the choice. Brighton has loads of great parks that have mostly be refurbished in the last 2 years, you can see the 'Downs' from where we live but the Daily Mail is not going to show you photos of these Pretty empty parks- thank God as they're currently safe havens from the tourists!

sorry sammy if you don't like what I am saying, disagree if you like, but shouting 'crap' wouldn't cut it in any kind of reasoned debate.

deliciousdevilwoman · 27/07/2012 10:15

Fut-I merely outlined the things I enjoy about Brighton when I visit. I have my own style of prose, often a little tongue in cheek/flowery. I make no apologies for that. Of course, you have exercised your right to make a number of assumptions (which incidentally, are so far removed from the kind of person I am) accordingly.
