To think that Brighton is a hideous dump

Just looking at these pictures:

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2179371/Broken-bottles-plastic-bags-left-strewn-Brighton-seafront.html

Yes I know there's probably a similar amount of rubbish on Bournemouth beach, but at least they've got SAND for fuck's sake.

As far as I can tell the only purpose Brighton serves is to be an easy journey from London on the train. All this bollocks about it being bohemian (i.e. lots of stag dos) is a front for the fact that it's effectively Croydon-on-sea - an expensive London commuter town but with extra vomit and seagull shit.

It's hideous.

Wtf? Child protection and the state of the beaches and litter are not for the same thread. Much more serious tbh and a different level of discussion.

Thecunningstunt · 27/07/2012 07:21

I think yabu to have a username so similar to mineGrin

noddyholder · 27/07/2012 07:24

Well off you go then. We weren't,t congratulating we were enjoying. Subtle difference I am not annoyed btw just having my say. You cannot argue with people who live here and love it by suggesting we secrety agree with you! I ave a great life here s do any of my friends that is a good thing and not for everyone .

FinnBuckingham · 27/07/2012 07:28

I love living near Brighton, it's one of the safest and most inclusive cities I've ever had as a local. Yes, the daytrippers and hen parties can be a PITA.
I love the festivals, the arts opportunities, the way that my odd children don't feel threatened or afraid wandering around the streets and never have.
Finn, there is rampant child abuse everywhere, I've worked in a lot of rough areas in cities from Brighton to Nottingham, Bristol and Manchester and there are far worse places than the estates of Brighton.

really not sure about that fallencaryatid

FallenCaryatid · 27/07/2012 07:48

Of course you aren't convinced Finn, you are speaking from your own experiences, as am I.
It would be wonderful if the status quo wasn't areas of affluence carefully ignoring the areas of deprivation and abuse at their elbows, but that's how it is up and down the land. The useful people try and right the imbalance and meet the needs, the useless shut their eyes and pretend it's not happening and the vile and ignorant keep doing what they do.

Back to Brighton lite.
Yes, there is less rubbish than Manchester, less dogshit than Paris and better parks, fewer aggressive drunks than Newcastle and Hull, less violent than Sheffield and Manchester, much prettier than Birmingham.
I've lived in a lot of other places that suited me less well than Brighton.

deliciousdevilwoman · 27/07/2012 07:54

Brighton rocks! Geddit...;)

Love, love, love it.

Deep fried oysters at English's-heavenly. Beer and seafood on the beach-when you can find a spot! Shooting the breeze over a bottle or two at The Pumphouse-even though it's always packed to the rafters. Dinner/cocktails at the vair quirky Blanche House. Good range of high street shops and little boutiques. Relaxed n laid back vibe.

I would move there if only pesky DH would agree.

FinnBuckingham · 27/07/2012 08:02

Newcastle Hull Sheffield Manchester Birmingham
not sure if these kind of cities are comparable...Blackpool maybe....

FallenCaryatid · 27/07/2012 08:07

The sea is toxic in Blackpool, never let my children near it.

FinnBuckingham · 27/07/2012 08:10

raw sewage outfall at Newhaven I think...or is it nearer..?

Tortington · 27/07/2012 08:11

brighton cafes are nice, but i'm with those who compare it to blackpool in terms of filth and stag/hen do's. i wouldn't go there after dark - seedy.

AlexReidsLonelyBraincell · 27/07/2012 08:16

Why are all of the 'violent' cities named mid to northern towns? I'm sure there are rough places in the beautiful south too.

FallenCaryatid · 27/07/2012 08:17

Both beaches in Brighton passed the MCS water quality gradings AFAIK.
Blackpool's main beaches have failed every year for decades.

Are we playing ping pong with facts now?

glastocat · 27/07/2012 08:17

I used to love a good dirty weekend in Brighton when I was living in London, although the beach is rubbish compared to the lovely ones in Norn Irn where I am from. I thought it had a really good atmosphere, and would have moved there in a heartbeat! I am laughing at the comparisons with Aussie beaches though, its a bit apples and oranges! Although I am moving to Oz next year, so am very excited about the loveliness of the beaches! :)

AlexReidsLonelyBraincell · 27/07/2012 08:17

But to be fair, Blackpool centre is a bit grim. The surrounding coastal areas are lovely though.

FallenCaryatid · 27/07/2012 08:18

Portsmouth and Southampton have very rough areas, Bristol has some serious deprivation and neglect.

RavenVonChaos · 27/07/2012 08:18

I live in Brighton and never go to the beach in the busy bits. Best for families is hove or a drive to saltdean.

Great opportunities for children, a warm and accepting city.

Have lived all over the country and would not live anywhere else.

Don't agree about rampant child abuse! Where do u get your info from? Compared to other places? Rubbish.

Don't come here if I don't like it. Beaches beautifully clean every morning and I have been cycling along seafront to work - bliss.

If i got the chance I would move to Sydney, but that's never gonna happen. So Brighton it is.

FallenCaryatid · 27/07/2012 08:20

'Why are all of the 'violent' cities named mid to northern towns?'

Those are the ones I've lived in, or have experience of dealing with. Nottingham and Bristol and Paris were in there too. Smile
Didn't mention London, and I've lived there too.
Everywhere has a downside as well as an upside, it's finding one you can cope with that makes for a happy resident.

We moved to Brighton from London a few months ago, mainly for the kids but actually we have all loved it from day 1.

Our sullen-faced, troubled teenager is now a sunny, bounding kid swimming with his friends in the sea, for which frankly I can't thank this city enough.
