To think that Brighton is a hideous dump

Just looking at these pictures:

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2179371/Broken-bottles-plastic-bags-left-strewn-Brighton-seafront.html

Yes I know there's probably a similar amount of rubbish on Bournemouth beach, but at least they've got SAND for fuck's sake.

As far as I can tell the only purpose Brighton serves is to be an easy journey from London on the train. All this bollocks about it being bohemian (i.e. lots of stag dos) is a front for the fact that it's effectively Croydon-on-sea - an expensive London commuter town but with extra vomit and seagull shit.

It's hideous.

Thought I recognised this thread!

Since the last time I posted I've moved to Whitehawk. Still perfectly happy to walk around at night! Unlike other places I've lived! Still loving Brighton too :)

tznett · 09/04/2014 15:10

Grin at the idea of London being "up North"

racmun · 09/04/2014 15:15

I agree with the OP, it's a filthy place. I would never in a million years go there to go on the beach but on the odd occasion we've gone there for the day I always find myself thinking its dirty with a definitely scummy/druggy element to it.

I haven't been back for about 2 years and I'm not planning on going back any time soon if ever.....

HelpfulChap · 09/04/2014 15:21

I like the place & go there regularly.

Each to their own.

CruCru · 09/04/2014 15:25

This is an old thread BUT I was brought up in Brighton. It used to smell of salt, Mr Whippy and hot concrete.

I sometimes go back (now live in north London) but the Brighton I grew up in (tarot shops etc) isn't there any more. The scuzziness was what made it awesome.

kentishgirl · 09/04/2014 16:02

I do quite like Brighton.

But I remember taking a new boyfriend there who came from another country with miles of gorgeous sandy beaches. I took him for a walk along Brighton beach. After about 20 minutes, he turned to me with a puzzled look on his face and asked 'when will we get to the beach?'

lol

Fleta · 09/04/2014 16:17

Ooo dear, I have a couple of crystals in my kitchen window - is it akin to a red light in a whore house? Am I on the SS radar for potential child abuse? If they do a spot check and see my extensive library on the occult they'd pass out on the spot at my sheer propensity for child abuse....

I've never been to Brighton, it is somewhere I'd really like to go though. I tend to find I'm spoilt up North with gorgeous beaches and never think about venturing South for a holiday. Must remedy that.

ddubsgirl · 09/04/2014 16:21

now in hove moved from whitehawk wouldnt go back there if they paid me!

Goblinchild · 09/04/2014 16:27

Each to their own, I love Brighton and I hated living in Manchester.

ConfusedPixie · 09/04/2014 16:57

I'm wondering where this scummy Brighton is tbh. Like any city there are bits than are a bit scummy, but it has certainly never seemed overly scummy to me. I've lived in both of the supposedly roughest parts of Brighton and neither even come close to my home town in seaside-Essex.

FurryDogMother · 09/04/2014 17:22

Brighton is brilliant! I grew up here and currently spend half my life back 'home' caring for my Dad (the rest of the time I live in rural Ireland). There is so much to do - there's the sea, the Downs, museums, galleries, shops and - my favourite - loads of specialist foodie places :) You can go out wearing anything and people don't stare at you, there's always something 'cultural' going on, and it's compact enough to walk to most places.

Much as I like escaping back home to the middle of nowhere (Ireland) I love coming back to Brighton for all the stuff mentioned above. Best of both worlds, really :)

The downside of Brighton is that it's not a cheap place to live - house and flat prices are alarming, parking is extortionate, buses cost loads - but then again, as I said, the centre's compact enough to walk around.

ddubsgirl · 09/04/2014 17:28

has its good & bad like everywhere this is an old thread and was based on the pics from a hot weekend and all the shit that was left on the beach which was mostly vistors! its expensive to live here green party are killing the city bus fares have gone up again! binmen are talking on striking again :(

MissWimpyDimple · 09/04/2014 20:49

Wow I posted on this thread 2 years ago and here we are again!

So to re-cap.

YES BRIGHTON IS A SHITHOLE, HOVE IS EVEN WORSE.

With that in mind please don't move here Wink we just can't fit you all into our schools!

Oblomov · 09/04/2014 20:52

Love visiting Brighton. My brother lives there. Think it is a fab place.

HesterShaw · 09/04/2014 20:54

This will have been said before A LOT but why is Brighton a dump because its visitors are lazy ignorant cunts?

HesterShaw · 09/04/2014 20:55

Why is this thread active? Am I just rampaging around MN looking for things to be annoyed about again?

MaryTheresa01 · 14/10/2015 20:05

A bit late I know. However, I lived in Brighton in the early 70s, moved away to Canada and the USA. Visited Brighton last summer. It has changed a great deal. It has gone from a dump to a third world slum. It didn't feel safe, at night especially it would take a braver person than most to walk around. It is a filthy hole, but then so much of the UK has become this way. I suspect people from the London area and in Brighton fool themselves that somehow this is San Francisco by the sea as they couldn't afford or don't have visas to actually move to San Francisco. What deluded fools they are.

TheCatsMother99 · 14/10/2015 20:13

Another zombie thread!

FWIW, I like Brighton Grin

SaucyJack · 14/10/2015 20:30

Mary, hun, what's gone so wrong for you recently that posting that seemed like a sane and witty thing to do?

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 14/10/2015 20:33

My grandma always used to say "if you can't say anything nice, don't revive zombie threads to slag off fantastic places like Brighton". Or something like that.

OrangeSquashTallGlass · 14/10/2015 20:36

Ah yes testing, sage advice. Mary obviously didn't have such a wise and wonderful grandma

Houseofmirth66 · 14/10/2015 20:49

It's bleak. The worst place is the marina where the giant Asda is plonked in the middle of a load of grotty chain restaurants and there's a desperate sense of forced nautical jauntiness. I twisted my ankle once on the 'beach' so that may be colouring my view!

HaydeeofMonteCristo · 14/10/2015 22:35

I can't resist joining in even though it's a zombie thread!

There are things I like and dislike about it.

I do like the pebble beaches but I prefer them outside the city centre - if you go a little way in either direction it's alot quieter and without the litter.

I really like it when it is wild and windy by the sea. It is also nice that it is a sea-side town that doesn't entirely shut down in winter, and has shops, bars, restaurants etc that continue to be fun and busy all year round.

I find the "quirky-ness" and somewhat-forced artiness a bit annoying. It's all a bit too self-conscious to feel "real" to me, and as a result doesn't actually feel very laid back. A bit like competitive

People refer to it as London by the sea. It isn't really as it's very monocultural and the vast, vast majority of people are white. This can feel a bit lacking, for want of a better word, if you come from London.

blessedbelle · 17/11/2019 03:55

Hi ladies, I m new in England, not married but hoping to be and then raise a family. Where is the best place to live with regard to work life balance please? Thank you :)
