To think that Brighton is a hideous dump

Just looking at these pictures:

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2179371/Broken-bottles-plastic-bags-left-strewn-Brighton-seafront.html

Yes I know there's probably a similar amount of rubbish on Bournemouth beach, but at least they've got SAND for fuck's sake.

As far as I can tell the only purpose Brighton serves is to be an easy journey from London on the train. All this bollocks about it being bohemian (i.e. lots of stag dos) is a front for the fact that it's effectively Croydon-on-sea - an expensive London commuter town but with extra vomit and seagull shit.

It's hideous.

more to brighton than just the beach, and most of that rubbish left behind was more likey to be left of out of towners as people from brighton know not to sit near the piers on hot days! pleanty of other beachline to choose from.

FinnBuckingham · 27/07/2012 10:18
  • Well this isnt a debate anymore your not playing the game so I can say what I like. Thanks.

I'm laughing at you, not shouting.*
bit rattled there sammy? drink some camomile tea!

Morloth · 27/07/2012 10:19

I quite liked Brighton. It was exactly what I thought the British seaside would be like.

We tended to go in the off season though as I do love a nice stormy sea.

Of course it is nothing like Sydney's beaches, not really a fair comparison.

GhouliaYelps · 27/07/2012 10:19

YANBU
I would spend every summer until age 15 at my parents holiday home in Brighton had wonderful memories of a beautiful place. When we had DD I begged DH to move there to give her a great life.

We booked a WK away and decided to drive around and get a feel for where we wanted to live and soak up the atmosphere.
We didn't make it to Saturday night, it was foul - full of drug addicts jacking up on the street, people urinating against walls, drinking, awful smell , the properties looked so run down. It was just dreadful we have never been back and never will.

ddubsgirl · 27/07/2012 10:23

i live on one of the roughest estates in brighton and it isnt that bad!

gnushoes · 27/07/2012 10:23

So Finn you were brought up in Whitehawk or Moulescoomb? Two of the most deprived estates in the South and probably the UK. Not a great argument to say the whole of Brighton is like that.

Nabootique · 27/07/2012 10:24

I used to live in Brighton and rarely went to the beach. It definitely isn't the nicest. I can see how the pier and rides are nice for the children, but I didn't have any then!

I loved living there but it was the alternative clothing shops, pubs, music scene, restaurants and just that nice "vibe" in certain parts that I loved. Actual town centre proper (Churchill Square, West Street) I rarely went to, especially not on a weekend night - full of pissed tourists and always at least one police van.

FallenCaryatid · 27/07/2012 10:24

Well, the solution seems simple. Those that like Brighton can live here or visit happily, those that don't can stay away for whatever reason.
Sorted!

lol @ sam

clam · 27/07/2012 10:32

I thought the "child abuse" remark was referring to parents who called their child 'Jocasta.'

FallenCaryatid · 27/07/2012 10:35

It's Finn, muttering about stuff she's heard about.

'I must say there is little 'friendly and sociable' about Brighton, that is a total myth.
I was horrified by some things I heard of there, horrified, and I am talking child protection issues.'

Goldenbear · 27/07/2012 10:50

Ghoulia, I'm surprised by the Brighton used to be beautiful comments. I thought in the past it used to be where the socially depraved went as depicted in 'Brighton Rock'. When I told my Dad I was moving here, he was surprised because this was the image he had of the place. To an extent it still has an edgy feel to it which I like.

Margerykemp · 27/07/2012 11:19

I was considering going on a day trip to Brighton. Never been. Is it not worth it?

What is good to do/see?

With kids/without?

FinnBuckingham · 27/07/2012 11:26

no, I was not, thank God. and I never said the whole of Brighton is like that.
I just said there is alot of child abuse and devil worship stuff going on.....IMHO.

fishface2 · 27/07/2012 11:27

I hope it's not. I'm just on the train now!

StunningCunt · 27/07/2012 11:29

We went to Bournemouth on Wednesday by train. It doesn't present very well on arrival, it's a bigger city than Brighton and you arrive in a bus station with a grim-looking giant Asda. We got down to the pier, which is not the most charming of walks from the station, and by the pier it was absolutely thronged with people, but we walked half-a-mile along the promenade and it was quieter and quite lovely, about ten miles of sandy beach and nice calm waters.

gnushoes · 27/07/2012 11:29

Devil worship? Lived here 30 years and the most satanic thing I've ever seen is drummers by the pier. Lordy.

cantspel · 27/07/2012 11:37

I like brighton but wouldn't like to live there but i am only a few miles away in west sussex.

Brighton is a miss mass of every type going. You have the yummy mummy type, the aging hippy type, the lentle weaving give you child the daftest name you can think of type, the up your arse bit of money type, the poor just getting by type and the dreggs of society type and lenty who dont fit into any type all living within a small area.

i like shopping in brighton but then i am a primark and poundland girl so avoid the caftan and skull shops. I dont like being ripped off so also avoid the trendy bars and cafes but brighton is so diverse you dont have to use these places as there are plenty of alternatives.

LentillyFart · 27/07/2012 11:42

Good to see your whole story descending into the realms of complete fantasy now finn Grin
We've really got it all going on here haven't we with the late addition of devil worship! Keep going - not that you need any more to cement your status as Loon of the Day!

gnushoes · 27/07/2012 11:50

Mind you lentilly you do have the perfect Brighton user name...
Wink

OhDearNigel · 27/07/2012 11:53

Lentilly, are you up for a devil-worshipping session at -Iydea ? Ill bring my pentacle and the rabbit foot.

FreudianSlipper · 27/07/2012 11:57

devil worshiping Shock i was always a little suspect taking a bucket and spade could hardly build sand castles what excatly was carried home at the end of the day

does anyone really go to brighton for the beach, everyone knows its a pebble beach and there are much nicer beaches around if you just want a nice beach

ddubsgirl · 27/07/2012 11:58
