To think that Brighton is a hideous dump

Just looking at these pictures:

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2179371/Broken-bottles-plastic-bags-left-strewn-Brighton-seafront.html

Yes I know there's probably a similar amount of rubbish on Bournemouth beach, but at least they've got SAND for fuck's sake.

As far as I can tell the only purpose Brighton serves is to be an easy journey from London on the train. All this bollocks about it being bohemian (i.e. lots of stag dos) is a front for the fact that it's effectively Croydon-on-sea - an expensive London commuter town but with extra vomit and seagull shit.

It's hideous.

Don't agree about rampant child abuse! Where do u get your info from? Compared to other places? Rubbish.
It is not rubbish at all, I know a lot about Brighton. All those crystal and tarot shops do also have a dark side. and saying,
Don't come here if I don't like it. - I suppose you meant 'you', is a defensive and fallacious argument.

suburbandream · 27/07/2012 08:25

I love Brighton - I saw those pictures too and was horrified, it's so depressing that people think it's ok to just leave their rubbish behind Sad.

confusedpixie · 27/07/2012 08:34

Yabu. I moved to brighton last year and absolutely love it so am biassed, but it really is great. I don't really go to the main beach though, I am closer to rottingdean beach which is much better. I'm from clacton on sea originally so don't really understand what is so great about the beach here with it's pebbles but the rubbish problem isn't only a brighton problem, locals couldn't use clacton beach for days after hot days when I was growing up thanks to the rubbish, and it's stay for weeks after too there!

The atmosphere here is entirely differentto the rest of the country, I love it! It's the only place I've ever felt 100% comfortable and I've lived in seven or eight counties.

MyCarHasBrokenDownAgain · 27/07/2012 08:36

Pics of the beaches at Seaford, Saltdean and Newhaven:

Saltdean & Seaford

Newhaven

Must admit, you wouldn't catch me anywhere near Brighton beach when there are these alternatives Smile

ancienthistrionics · 27/07/2012 08:38

They actually took that pic after the last mums-net meet-up Grin

LentillyFart · 27/07/2012 08:39

Up to this point I just thought you were full of shit. Thank you for proving me right!

I do like lots of things about Brighton; great festivals, some beautiful areas, and it's very, very inclusive and open.

But I've also always found it really seedy and dirty and there's something about it which seems to attract some very desperate, vulnerable people. Huge, huge drug problem, although I know you can say that about every city. If I go there, it's fun, it's different, it's buzzing, but I always want to get home and scrub myself clean.

Really sad to see the photo of the beach in that state, I find it pretty disgusting that for all the messages out there about taking your litter home with you, and caring for the environment, that many people didn't care enough about something that is beautiful and just left it in that state. I hate people sometimes.

confusedpixie · 27/07/2012 08:47

Ancient Grin

CatholicDad · 27/07/2012 08:47

Ok, right, but you should probably visit the place before you write about it.

mamasmissionimpossible · 27/07/2012 08:50

I live in Brighton and think it's a great place to bring up children. Loads of great park, the sea (when the visitors have gone home), good weather (most of the time!), friendly people.

I just wish we could afford a bigger place, as the prices are astronomical for a basic house Angry

DialsMavis · 27/07/2012 08:54

I love Brighton, please name a city by the Sea that doesn't have the dirt/drugs/stag & hen issues. I am from Bournemouth which has all those issues but is also really boring, with a crap arts/music/fashion/cultural scene. I live in London (not out of choice) and I do love it, but if I could I would move to Bristol or Brighton in heartbeat Smile

All the real witches live in Lewes.

redexpat · 27/07/2012 08:56

YANBU. It's the most unfriendly place I have ever lived. Not once did a housemate invite me out. I know someone who was in a sportsclub for 2 years and never once got invited to a social event. It's overcrowded, overpriced and totally up its own arse.

Discolite · 27/07/2012 08:58

Brighton is stuffed full of hipsters and silly shops.

FreudianSlipper · 27/07/2012 08:58

rampant child abuse Shock must not take ds there again as i have read this on mn

i love brighton, we always went there for a day out when i was a child. i still like it i also like hastings. brighton is a little shabby now but still has a charm to it

only place in the uk i would live other than london, thats if i had to leave london

LoveHandles88 · 27/07/2012 08:59

YABU.
It is a British seaside town. How high are your expectations?
I love Brighton town with it's weird streets and alleys.
Rampant child abuse is in every town, if you look hard enough, you'll find it.
Sand is totally over rated. It gets bloody everywhere, and with the slightest bit of wind, is a total nightmare.
But, overall I like Brighton, because unlike Bournemouth, I didn't get spiked by a bloody weaverfish!!!!!

clam · 27/07/2012 08:59

It pains me to read this about Brighton as I've always had a soft spot for the place as my grandmother lived in Rottingdean and I spent many summers there as a child. However, we were choosing a beach to go to on Wednesday and I crossed Brighton straight off the list as I was so depressed last year when I went. We had our new puppy with us and he couldn't go on the pier so my dad took the kids and my mother and I waited on the underwalk of the marine parade for them.

Shock Not going back!

FallenCaryatid · 27/07/2012 09:00

Anyone read the last paragraph of the DM article?

'Meanwhile the spokesman for Brighton council said that litter teams had managed to return the beach back to its former glory.
He said: 'It was all gone a few hours later because our cleaning teams had dealt with it as usual.'

That's the people of Brighton knowing how to cope with all the crap left by the lazy, littering daytrippers. Next step would be everyone in the country taking their rubbish home with them.

RugBugs · 27/07/2012 09:07

YABU every place has its good and bad points. I grew up in and around Brighton (moved to London for 20's and now in Merseyside but my extended family are still in Sussex) and it's a nicer place than it used to be, Kemptown used to be a shithole but it's where a fair few of my London friends wanted to move to with their families!
Do agree with the beach, we would always go to Hove with its paddling pool - the outdoor lifestyle is the one thing I miss about living on the south coast.

FutTheShuckUp · 27/07/2012 09:08

Deliciousdevilwoman- your post was so pretentious it made me cringe. Shooting the breeze? Wtaf? Sadly Brighton does attract this type of arty farty nouveau riche wannabes

FallenCaryatid · 27/07/2012 09:15

'Sadly Brighton does attract this type of arty farty nouveau riche wannabes'

Maybe so, and it may irritate you. However I'm happier for my children to wander freely amongst such types as teenagers, they are much less likely to come to harm.
My DS has Asperger's. my DD was a Goth for years.
Brighton has a high tolerance for eccentrics and difference and diversity. I love that.

thebody · 27/07/2012 09:22

Never been but now plan to just to judge.

Worcestershire is lovely.

LentillyFart · 27/07/2012 09:26

There's a reason dogs aren't allowed on the Pier. Take your time to work it out if you need to.

FinnBuckingham · 27/07/2012 09:31

Up to this point I just thought you were full of shit. Thank you for proving me right!
lentillyfart, I may be saying something you do not want to hear, but Brighton does have a dark side, and the local obsessions with crystals, white witchery and the tarot do not stand alone, or co-incidentally. stating that someone is 'full of shit' because you disagree with them is not really adult discussion.
