What's wrong with a shrug?

JamieandTheOlympicTorch · 14/07/2012 15:40

There are some lovely dresses in Monsoon atm.

Peachy · 14/07/2012 15:40

Actually one of the few pics of me I do not detest is of me in a strapless gown when I was a size 16. So there. Not a wedding dress though, I wore a dark grey silk dress and coat for that.

And I often wear a strapless dress with a cardi so you know, fashion police and doing one n all that.

AnnaMosity · 14/07/2012 15:42

I'm Always convinced the upper body will POP out and explode all over the guests.

I couldnt find a dress that wasnt strapless when I got married, I had to have a bolero made. I was quite relieved when Kate Middleton had a sleeved gown as that should hopefully change the fashion a bit.

Strapless gowns are rarely flattering on anyone, as you need to be slim around the back but well stacked up front, and most women who are slim dont have big boobs and us big boobers tend to be bigger everywhere else too! I needed the body I had when I was a size 10 and the boobs I have now as a size 16 for it to look good :o

Peachy · 14/07/2012 15:42

And why would one have an ill fitting bra? isn't that what bra fitters are for?

JamieandTheOlympicTorch · 14/07/2012 15:43

OP - you are being sizeist

I am being straplessist

Debeez - there is a knee-length pencil dress with sleeves and boat neck in Monsoon

bogeyface · 14/07/2012 15:43

But, you are being very bitchy OP, if a bigger woman wants to wear a strapless gown, why the hell do you care?

HermioneE · 14/07/2012 15:43

Having said that I've just thought of two brides I know who were maybe 12-14 and looked fab in strapless dresses. Maybe all the ones I tried were badly cut. trying to convince self

AnnaMosity · 14/07/2012 15:44

Lol at peachy. Maybe they go to marks.

Peachy - but you wear a cardi (as would I). I am sure you look lovely.

AnnaMosity · 14/07/2012 15:44

Agree. Or a cagoule Maybe. Hth

"There are tons of dresses with sleeves now and some absolutely beautiful ones" - tanfastic please point me in the direction of some. My best friend is getting married and, as a non-size 10, 40-something bride, wants sleeves. We've looked and looked and haven't found any.

AnnaMosity · 14/07/2012 15:45

Or just wear a slanket.
Comfy and warm.

The reason Aniston looks good is that she has the aerobicised arms and the fake boobs. Not tenable for most of us.

mumblecrumble · 14/07/2012 15:46

I was a size 18/20 in my strapless and I looked GORGEOUS*. I have a huge tummy, medium bum but my arms, neck look 'average' size. Also my boobs looked great.

You can naff off. And not go to weddings

*The only thing I have ever worn where this is any where near applicable.

Thumbwitch · 14/07/2012 15:47

YABU, because my friend wore one (that fitted properly) and she is a size 14-16 top, 12-14 bottom - it looked gorgeous^ on her, really did. No back fat, no arm fat - she looked very queenly and not like some of these coat-hanger style models - I was extremely Envy of her figure in her dress.

YAalso BU because you are being sizeist.

formerdiva · 14/07/2012 15:47

You sound dreadful.

Just saying...

AnnaMosity · 14/07/2012 15:47

That's ok. It's a given. :)

Long Sleeve Lace Dress

Princess for a Day ...

Peachy · 14/07/2012 15:49

Yes I do wear a cardi becuase I want to; should I wish to wear a strapless dress without one though I well- just would.

I honestly can;t see why I would dress thinking 'I wonder what random people who see me will think'; I ask myself am I happy, am I tidy and presentable and that's enough surely? Possibly though as my dress sense is not of the classic tailored trouser kind, more the dress / leggings / cardi / ridiculous shoes type, me.

But surely the whole point of getting older (apart from nearing death and making space for another generation and the depressing stuff) is to start to feel happy with who you are? I like me, how I dress and who I am. I'm OK.

Anna- thinking more of House of Fraser actually as we have one here. And no I don't own a cag LMAO. Bit too old though to spend my life worrying about other people- at 39 ScottishMum's phrase words on a screen becomes more understandable with every passing day.

Viviennemary · 14/07/2012 15:50

Inner beauty is important. I think. Which means not being a mean and nasty person. Just saying.

JamieandTheOlympicTorch · 14/07/2012 15:51

No you shouldn't.

I am being a bit tongue in cheek. The thing that has struck me about the people I've seen in strapless (not all), is how uncomfortable they look. I think anyone can carry off anything if they look comfortable.

LetsKateWin · 14/07/2012 15:51

I hate wearing strapless, and I've never found a decent strapless bra...

You sound very bitter OP
