to feel a bit sorry for Tom Cruise

Don't flame me! I'm not even a fan of the man - honest. He just seems to have the whole world of Mumsnet against him and I don't see what's wrong with him other than the Press have got it in for him.

Nicole Kidman seemed very happy when she was married to him, I remember reading an interview with her in which she talked about his kindness and how he "never went for the jugular" in arguments.

He has raised his two children with Nicole after she seemingly walked away from them. Like Peter Andre, he Really Loves His Kids.

OK so he's a Scientologist but to agnostics like me that doesn't seem any weirder than Christianity or Islam or any other religion.

So can we please have some MN love for TC?

The Sea Org stuff on that forum linked here is horrifying. Very scary indeed.

LittleLucifer · 06/07/2012 17:52

East Grinstead is a hot spot for Scientologists. The Dianetics shop in town kept getting smashed up and eventually closed. It was the prime spot to vandalise on a night out. Grinny's hate Scientology! I too heard stories of Scientologist kids disappearing...think they were sent to the Scientology school....something Fields.. Has been the same since the 60's. They have holiday camps in the summer which are open to all kids....worrying as the literature doesnt mention scientology so unsuspecting parents might not realise. And there were always rumours of Cruise, Travolta et al buying properties in the area. EG was the world HQ for the 'religion'. I think it's LA now.

lotsofcheese · 06/07/2012 18:39

Don't feel sorry for TC. At all. I think his behaviour to KH has been controlling. He picked someone decades younger so he could control & manipulate her. She's now grown up & is her own woman, not tolerating that crap for herself or her child. Good luck to her.

ThePathanKhansWitch · 06/07/2012 18:44

Are you TC mum OP ?

Huffles · 06/07/2012 18:44

With all this hype in the papers - nobody knows the real truth behind the split. We're all gaging it on what we're reading. The only two people who do know are Tom and Katie.

So they're getting divorced - leave them to it. They're not the only people to do so and I'm sure they won't be the last.

rollingfog143 · 06/07/2012 18:52

No, I'm not a Scientologist ... or TC's mum (he's older than me Grin)

I just don't believe everything I read in the Daily Mail and I think TC should be given the benefit of the doubt.

OP, have you read any of the links on this thread. For me, it's now less about whether we should feel sorry for Tom and more about how anyone could be a member of such a sinister cult organisation. Don't you think it all sounds rather unpleasant, OP?

perceptionreality · 06/07/2012 19:19

quite, Avon

musicposy · 06/07/2012 22:55

OP, you definitely have an agenda. It makes no sense not to say "wow I didn't know that, I was wrong" when you've been presented with so much evidence and so many links.

LynetteScavo · 06/07/2012 23:02

I used to think TC was the best thing since sliced bread.

But I cannot feel even a tiny bit sorry for him.

Run, Katie, run and take your child with you.

LentillyFart · 06/07/2012 23:04

He should be given the 'benefit of the doubt'? To what end? To prove he's not a lizard worshipping brain auditing controlling intergalactic freakazoid? Good luck with that!

ReindeerBollocks · 06/07/2012 23:15

I'm with Lynette.

And after all the links, OP, you were just a bit Katie bashing. Which seems odd.

NoOnesGoingToEatYourEyes · 07/07/2012 01:18

I don't think he is a bad person OP, and I don't hate him.

But there is no way I would want him to have any input into bringing up my child if those are the choices he would make for him and Scientology was the 'religion' he would want my son to believe in.

I don't doubt that he loves his daughter, but I do doubt that he is the parent who will make the best choices for her.

differentnameforthis · 07/07/2012 05:01

I've always thought he's a good guy. And whenever you read interviews with stars who've worked with TC, they all say that same: he's a good bloke And that is what the people outside relationships say about abusers..... because they never see what goes on behind closed doors, do they!

I read an interview with Simon Pegg recently and he was very complimentary about TC, having worked with him on the lates MI movie. (in which Tom did all his own stunts) Then he must be a supergod! Really, does his own stunts....WOW!!!! Hmm

YouOldSlag · 07/07/2012 10:55

YABU OP.

Any wife who divorces her cult obsessed husband by catching him off guard, moving out, trying to get sole custody and changing her phone and email details must be scared.

TodaysAGoodDay · 07/07/2012 11:05

No. There's a reason he's divorced 3 times.

limitedperiodonly · 07/07/2012 13:25

This is an excerpt of an interview with Bronson Pinchot, the actor who played the camp art gallery assistant in Beverly Hills Cop.

He wasn't very impressed by Tom Cruise

The behaviour seems so strange that it makes me think he's telling the truth. If you really wanted to stick the boot in you'd make up something more specific. It also makes me wonder whether Cruise, like lots of people, wrongly assumed Pinchot was gay and was making hilarious not-so-subtle digs.

He's not very complimentary about some other people either but he liked Tom Hanks.

GracieW · 07/07/2012 23:08

Sorry, another YABU from me!

He makes my skin crawl

MushroomSoup · 07/07/2012 23:44

Mrslaughan - what are you on about, TC accused NK of cheating when she was pregnant and made the DCs have DNA tests cos he didn't think he could have kids? Their two DCs were adopted!

YouOldSlag · 08/07/2012 00:06

Mushroom- NK miscarried around the time of her divorce from TC- so maybe it was that pregnancy Mrslaughan was referring to.

GinevraMollyWeasley · 08/07/2012 01:05

I've been reading all these links with interest, and they lead me to a UK Scientology school Their belief regarding SEN is very telling.... sorry op, nothing to do with the original AIBU but very interesting nonetheless.

Serendipity30 · 08/07/2012 01:13

Have you seen how happy Katie has looked since filing for divorce nuff said

Pitmountainpony · 08/07/2012 01:29

A friend of a friend worked closely with him when he was with a certain ex wife.
Her opinion......he was a gentleman and very kind and the now ex wife was a difficult prima Donna whose ambition was frightening.the kids wanted to stay with the more loving parent.
I just think marriages sometimes fail and that is sad for all involved.

BrandyAlexander · 08/07/2012 01:30

No. Really, just no. He's clearly a nasty piece of work and I am not even talking about his religion. The way that he treated NK at the end of their relationship, serving divorce papers on her just before the 10 years time limit where she would have been entitiled to half his assets, accusing her of having an affair and then alienating her children from her. I used to be a fan, but since that whole NK episode, I have to turn over if he is on my tv screen and refuse to spend one penny of my money watching his films. For the record, I also thought that KH was a nasty piece of work too (irrespective of whether she had been brainwashed). She enabled the alienation of NK's kids from her, including allowing the kids to call her "mom" while calling their mother by her first name. I am totally convinced that there's a small corner reserved in hell for women who enable their partners to treat their former spouses like shit.
