Not allowing people to smoke in my house

Huffles · 05/07/2012 22:14

I don't smoke and one of my house rules is you don't smoke in my house. A friend who I haven't seen in a good couple of months turned up on my door step a couple of weeks ago - puffing away on a cigarette. My 7 year old answered the door and said: 'Mum won't let you in while you have that.' (meaninig her cigarette. She responded by saying: 'Well, let's see what Mum says.' When I got to the door I politely explained that I didn't mind her smoking outside as long as she disposed properly of her cigarette but she was not to come in with it.

She got in a right huff and called me a snob and stormed off!

yanbu, sounds fine to me.

PuggyMum · 05/07/2012 22:18

YANBU. I don't allow smoking in my house either. But my friends / family would never dream of smoking here!!

Sirzy · 05/07/2012 22:19

Let her storm off, blooming rude to even go to someone elses door smoking and expecting to be allowed in unless you know they are a smoker who smokes in the house.

iloveACK · 05/07/2012 22:19

I'd have done the same, so YANBU Grin

Huffles · 05/07/2012 22:21

It's the snob bit that got me - I'm the least snobbish person you could meet lol!

I'm a smoker and I don't allow smoking in my own house. Would never expect to smoke inside someone else's

Yanbu

littlemisssarcastic · 05/07/2012 22:23

I'm a smoker Blush and I don't smoke in my house, and don't allow anyone else to either.

I have very few friends who do smoke in their homes, even when they smoke themselves, so I find your friend's attitude a little odd tbh.

biddysmama · 05/07/2012 22:24

i make peope go outside to smoke or let people smoke round the children, thats why my mum doesnt visit us and why we cant go to visit her

Glittertwins · 05/07/2012 22:25

Sod that, YANBU. I don't mind smoking on the patio, when the hooligans are not about but no way is anyone smoking in the house. Not one smoking friend has ever presumed smoking would be okay indoors and have always gone outside of their own volition ( and no cats bum mouth from me)

knittedslippersx3 · 05/07/2012 22:25

Yanbu. No smoking zone here as well!

redonculous · 05/07/2012 22:26

YANBU. Especially as you have dc living with you. And even if you didn't, your house = your rules.

WaitingForMe · 05/07/2012 22:26

What the hell? We have one smoking friend and she politely asks if we mind her going outside! At a recent BBQ she walked off to the other end of the garden. We have never said anything about our views on smoking, it's purely of her own volition. Surely it's just how civilised people behave Confused

Booette · 05/07/2012 22:27

YANBU!!! No one will ever be allowed to smoke in our house. I wouldn't even let my mum go in the back garden, she had to walk down the road away from the house. The neighbours smoke outside and we can smell indoors when they do. Horrible.

lastnerve · 05/07/2012 22:28

Nope your house your rules.

McHappyPants2012 · 05/07/2012 22:29

Yanbu, it stinks.

i don't care if people smoke or not, just not in my home. I have spare umbrellas for visitors to use and also provide outdoor ashtrays.

FunnysInLaJardin · 05/07/2012 22:29

do people still smoke in houses? I thought twas ill eagle

ddubsgirl · 05/07/2012 22:29

since dh has quit smoking no longer allowed in the house

WenTheEternallySurprised · 05/07/2012 22:31

YANBU. She's just rude!

waterlego6064 · 05/07/2012 22:32

I smoke and know quite a few smokers. Only one of them smokes in his own home and he is a single man living in a shitty bachelor bedsit. I think it's weird to smoke indoors.

stinkymice · 05/07/2012 22:34

DH used to only smoke in garden. (given up now yea!)
Same with neighbours,I have noticed they smoke in garden.
YANBU she is weird to get in a huff.

Huffles · 05/07/2012 22:36

My dad smokes and not even he is allowed in my house with a cigarette. He doesn't even smoke in his own house - he always goes out to the back door.

It looks like all round that smoking in houses being a smoker or not is pretty rare these days.

Presumably you drink alcohol? If so, tell her she can bring the by product of her habit into your home to be spread all over and inhaled by your family if you can similarly cover her in the by product of your alcoholic beverages!

SPsFanjoLovesRussellHoward · 05/07/2012 22:36

I'm a smoker and would never turn up at someone's house smoking never mind expect to be allowed to smoke in the house!

Even when I go to mums I leave the garden.

Gymbob · 05/07/2012 22:39

Same here, when DH smoked he went into the garage, and our DD never knew he even smoked.

Why would you spend money decorating and furnishing your house then go and smoke in it? How times have changed though...20 odd years ago I remember taking pictures off the wall and seeing the white squares where they had been...

BlueFergie · 05/07/2012 22:39

YANBU. That is so weird. I don't know any smokers who would even ask if they could smoke in my house never mind assume they can. They all just go outside. I don't even know any smokers who smoke in their own house. Very rude of your friend.
