Not allowing people to smoke in my house

Huffles · 05/07/2012 22:14

I don't smoke and one of my house rules is you don't smoke in my house. A friend who I haven't seen in a good couple of months turned up on my door step a couple of weeks ago - puffing away on a cigarette. My 7 year old answered the door and said: 'Mum won't let you in while you have that.' (meaninig her cigarette. She responded by saying: 'Well, let's see what Mum says.' When I got to the door I politely explained that I didn't mind her smoking outside as long as she disposed properly of her cigarette but she was not to come in with it.

She got in a right huff and called me a snob and stormed off!

YANBU I don't even let DP smoke in his house Grin

WhosPickleisThatOnion · 05/07/2012 23:07

Mmmmmmmm smoke... Thought the letter box. I'd sniff it.

I'm a desperate ex smoker.

WorraLiberty · 05/07/2012 23:07

But having said all that...

As much as I think the banning of smoking indoors is a great thing, I really think the hysterical pearl clutching of some people who moan about outdoor smoking or someone holding their baby half an hour after having a fag, is totally ridiculous.

Then again, some people will clutch their pearls at any available opportunity.

snaplockslags · 05/07/2012 23:09

I didnt mean to sound patronising, Im just speaking the truth, it is smelly anti social and dangerous and everyone should at least try to stop

charllie · 05/07/2012 23:09

People used to smoke in mine, til i had DD then i put a stop to it. The first time my mum came round after i'd stopped people, she was very cheeky and said well one wont matter. I gave in :( but after that stuck to it and didn't let her, she doesn't visit here now haha. But YANBU, no way! How rude of your friend!!

mummybare · 05/07/2012 23:10

Was she drunk, OP? She sounds drunk... :o

Oh and YANBU.

CleoSmackYa · 05/07/2012 23:18

My parents are both heavy smokers and even they don't smoke in their house!

WhosPickleisThatOnion · 05/07/2012 23:21

Empusa · 05/07/2012 23:41

Tbh I only clicked on the thread because I was hoping there be some nutcase going on about how unreasonable the OP was, and I thought it might be amusing. I'm very disappointed. :(

ErikNorseman · 06/07/2012 07:54

I'm surprised anyone would expect to smoke in anyone's house these days!

Bunbaker · 06/07/2012 07:54

I think it is odd that anyone would visit someone's house with a cigarette in thier hand and expect to be allowed to continue smoking inside.

"I really think the hysterical pearl clutching of some people who moan about outdoor smoking or someone holding their baby half an hour after having a fag, is totally ridiculous."

It depends on the situation. Unfortunately we have been backwards and forwards to the local children's hospital with DD recently, and the wall of smoke that hits you when you step outside A & E is really unpleasant. I understand that the circumstances are very stressful, but would prefer it if the smokers could smoke a little further away from the entrance. Also, it is just outside the triage nurse's office so the smoke comes in through the open window Angry

YANBU at all. Your "friend" is.
