a set down and I'm beaming...

Yes, it must really piss the English off when they're forced to speak Scots in school or face a bollocking. "It's not wall, it's wa', it's not ball, it's ba."

That definitely happens all the time.

I really don't get why some English people don't understand why a lot of Scots resent them. The fact that a lot of people just assume that Scotland is England but colder. The fact that, as I said above, we were forced to speak English at school, not our dialect. The fact that you open the Guardian (in Scotland) and find a travel article that talks about being north of the border.

It all just starts to grate sometimes.

FayeGovan · 04/07/2012 23:32

or how "in the north" means Leeds

Donteventhinkaboutit · 05/07/2012 00:03

Blimey, is it a full moon or something......

I thought the whole point of competitive sports is that someone wins and someone loses and that people watching usually support one competitor over another and that they want someone to win and therefore want someone to lose.

With tennis i usually support the most handsome player. not supported Murray that often

grimbletart · 05/07/2012 00:21

Gosh. Is this the most childish thread ever? Possibly.

PrettyCherryTrees · 05/07/2012 00:24

CurrySpice it is unfortunate that you feel patronised but I have reread my post and I'm slightly at a loss as to why you are offended by it?

I didn't say anything negative at all about England or the English.
I didn't say that the English shouldn't value and celebrate their own culture and history in point of fact I think it is important that they do.
I didn't even say that England has never been subject to oppression.

My point was that Scottish is a different country. A small country with a much smaller population that its bigger, stronger neighbour.

Now tacit in your post is that you are aware of this which is great however it was clear from a number of earlier posters that they did not understand why Andy Murray (like many Scots) describes himself as Scottish rather than British.

I would fully support any English sports person to describe themselves as English, which in fact they do.

I'm not sure if we actually have any points of disagreement Curry but I'm sure you'll let me know.

Frontpaw · 05/07/2012 06:54

I'd also chip in that most English describe themselves at British. Most people can't tell you the difference between UK and GB. So please don't whinge when a Scot says he is Scottish. How often is a GB/UK team described as the English Team. In WW2, we were fighting for England (bugger the rest of the UK, but we won't get into that...). I am half N half. So have seen rubbish at/from both sides.

In this day and age, I still have to laugh off jokes about my supposed meanness. In reality, I know where the meanest people in the country are (but I'm not telling!) and its not Scotland!

Frontpaw · 05/07/2012 06:55

First line - English describe themselves as English too early.....

CurrySpice · 05/07/2012 07:08

I didn't say we had any points of disagreement. I was making a comment about what you'd said ie that people in England (and Wales, and France, and china and outer Mongolia) also feel the same way about their about their countries as the scottish do. Your post seemed to imply that Scotland was a special case. I don't necessarily think that kind of attitude does Scotland any favours.

ElephantsCanRemember · 05/07/2012 07:13

Am I the only one who finds Andy Murray strangely attractive then? Blush

redlac · 05/07/2012 07:16

Curry if the English feel so secure in their culture why do they then feel all hurt when someone from another country won't support them at football? Why do they feel the need to say "i would support scotland if they were in the finals " when they dont come from that country? Why do they feel the need to use England and Britian interchangeably? That's the sort of attitude that does England no favours

I think everyone in GB would get along just fine if the everyone especially the media realised that yes, there are distinctive countries within the union

CurrySpice · 05/07/2012 07:18

Rediac I don't.

Then again you have assumed I'm English haven't you?

redlac · 05/07/2012 07:19

No i haven't assumed anything

amandine07 · 05/07/2012 07:26

Oh for gawd's sake, cheer up and get behind Andy- he is a Brit and I for one will be cheering for him!

He's one of the top tennis players in the world, consistently in the top 5...yes he has not won Wimbledon (yet) but has achieved so much so far.
The ATP tennis tour rolls on for the rest of the year, not just the 2 weeks in SW19.

I for one will be proudly supporting Murray!!! Grin

amandine07 · 05/07/2012 07:28

Oooh only read the first couple of replies...I see this has descended into an English vs Scots debate!

pah I see Murray as a scottish/GBR player who I want to see win!

amandine07 · 05/07/2012 07:28
CurrySpice · 05/07/2012 07:29

You've certainly assumed that a nation of 50+million people all think the same Rediac.

redlac · 05/07/2012 08:06

Just as you have assumed that all SCots think the same too

CurrySpice · 05/07/2012 08:09

I haven't. I've been addressing the points in Cherry's posts.

corlan · 05/07/2012 08:41

Where's Mel Gibson when you need him - Freeeeeeeedommmmmmmm!!

NicholasTeakozy · 05/07/2012 09:08

Thank you Corlan, you've just reminded me of about Braveheart.

Saltire · 05/07/2012 09:46

Indeed there is a thread with the title asking about "Dwayne Chambers competing for England" (in the Olympics).

now the OP on that thread has apologised, but it's a comment #many English people make. Infact, the BBC commentator yesterday at Federers match made reference to prince Wiliam as "the future King of England" Hmm

note I said many, not all

PrettyCherryTrees · 05/07/2012 09:49

Curry Of course people from all nationalities consider their own countries to be special! That was my point! My point was that because Andy Murray considers his home country (Scotland) to be special he calls himself Scottish rather than British.

As I said in my earlier post no one would be surprised that a French person called themselves French before European or a Dutch person Dutch before European. Andy Murray however gets a great deal of stick in the media for calling himself Scottish rather than British.

I am not saying that Scotland is a special case. I am saying that it is exactly the same as any other actual country as opposed to it being just a north British region.

IME some people don't realise/forget the extent to which Scotland is a country distinct from England.

I'm not clear why pointing out the above gives rise to any "attitude that doesn't do Scotland any favours".

Curry I'm sorry but I'm finding it a bit irritating that when replying to my posts you are responding to inferences which are not in fact there. I feel like you are addressing me as if I am some rabid, English hating harridan. I'm not.

Read my posts I have tried very hard to be non partisan throughout. I haven't said anything negative about England or the English, I was merely trying to clear up some apparent misconceptions by other posters earlier in the thread.

Somone else said that the thread had descended into Scotland vs England - this may be true but not in my posts. It is possible to be pro Scotland without being anti anything else.

JennyPiccolo · 05/07/2012 10:18

SAOR ALBA!

In all seriousness, ~I love Scotland, i'm a supporter of independence, but I'm very fond of England and of a lot of English people. I just don't like being ruled by Westminster. The two really aren't mutually exclusive, I wish we could just celebrate our differences. We will always share a fecking island, after all.

Queenofsiburbia · 05/07/2012 10:27

nicholasteacosy love that clip!!!
Esp deep fried heroin Grin

The beardy man at front of audience has same kind of cheerful, charismatic appearance as aponymous hero of this thread ;)

rubberglove · 05/07/2012 10:31

You are pathetic

He doesn't fit the image, but we live in a narcissistic world. I bet if he was stunning, a charmer people would support him.

What he said about England was banter with Henman, whilst in the same press conference. He was a teenager and he got stung.

For humility, watch his loss against federer in australian open final, he cried.

he is the best british player for a long timd, fact. But we only support the good looking, flashy personalities

Pathetic

Oh and I live in dunblane. We would like something positive for the town, after the awful tradegy.
